Issue 18 – Term 2 – Week 8 Monday 11 June 2012 FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE Assembly Success – Well done to Year 4 and Mr Preston! They provided an amusing and enjoyable assembly to their friends and parents. Clever limericks, all written by the students, were presented in the form of skits. They managed to maintain their personas through the entire assembly. Some of the „old men‟ took a long time to get on and off the stage, much to the delight of the audience. Academy Award winning performances by all! Visit to the Harry Jarvis Wing – Accompanied by Miss Mills and Mrs Jones, Kinder ventured to the Harry Jarvis Wing to entertain the residents. They performed beautifully, singing lots of songs and reciting nursery rhymes. Much to the delight of the children, and the audience, Dorothy, a former school teacher, led the children in ‘Miss Polly had a Dolly’. It is great to see our youngest children, being thoughtful, caring citizens. Dance Festival Feedback – It was most gratifying to receive an email from Mr Colin Parker, Regional Director for the Riverina, congratulating our students on their excellent performance on 1 June. Mr Parker commented on the sophistication of the performance and their beautiful execution of the piece. Well done team, and thank you to Mr Parker for taking the time to contact us. More Dance – Hot on the heel of the success of our Dance Troupe, Faith Pyers attended the NSW Public School State Dance Camp, held at the Sydney Dance Company Studios. No doubt, Faith will have lots of tales to tell, and much to share with her dance colleagues. Senior Debate – Congratulations to the Senior Debate Team, made up of Austin Todd, Claire Holt, Sophie Killalea and Bailey Martin on their win over Henty Public School on Tuesday, 5 June. This was a hard fought and close debate. Our team, under the guidance of Mr Bruce Allworth, were well prepared and worked together as a cohesive group. Top job! The Community of Schools Debating Challenge – Billabong High School hosted a fantastic day of debating for Year 3 and 4 students on Friday, 8 June. The day was led by Billabong High teachers and Year 11 students. It was an opportunity for students to learn about debating, how to debate and the skills and techniques used in debating. Ellen Mathie, Kairos McClutchie, Henry Gulliver, Olivia Hearn, Leah Watson and Becky Bulle attended and thoroughly enjoyed the day. With this sort of knowledge under their belts, it may be best not to argue with these students! Continued Maintenance – Though much is happening, with lots of noise and movement, learning has not been disrupted. Tradesmen have been very considerate and have tried to fit in with the workings of the school. The Infants verandahs are being coated with a non slip surface and have been completed over the long weekend. The netball court is usable, and now only requires lines to be really serviceable. After much grunting and moving of furniture, the carpets were cleaned on Thursday night. Thanks to all the staff, who always manage to cope beautifully and complain little. A very busy week! REMEMBER TO SIGN YOUR CHILD IN AND
OUT OF SCHOOL If your child arrives at school late or leaves early, it is a legal requirement that you come to the office and sign your child either in or out of school. This enables us to
know where your child is at any time and should there ever be an emergency, your child‟s teacher will know instantly if your child is on the school premises. If, for example, your child arrived late, and you did not sign them in, then the roll will show your child as being absent and their teacher (in an emergency situation) may forget to look for them.

Women in Action Veggie Gardening–Soils and Plantsmanship Event
Holbrook Landcare Network is running a special series of gardening events in 2012 that focus on learning skills that can translate to farm management.
The Holbrook Landcare Network 2012 Gardening Program is designed to provide lots of valuable information in a fun, social context to encourage members who may find it tricky to participate in our field days.
The first event on 18 June will be at Abby Paton‟s „Fellow Hills‟ where there will be information on Veggie Gardening; understanding soils and soil health and what plants need to grow well.
Edwina Hayes, Regional Landcare Facilitator, is keen to talk further about the program. She can be contacted on 02 60363181.

Cup Cakes Kids love to eat little cupcakes. They look terrific arranged on a cake stand and they‟re the ideal size for kids to pick up with their hands. Healthy options Whip up a batch of banana cupcakes or use freshly-grated carrot to make little carrot cupcakes. If you prefer to use a packet cupcake mixture, add a few handfuls of fresh blueberries to a basic vanilla cupcake recipe. Transform cupcakes by topping with reduced fat cream cheese icing and use colourful fresh fruits for decoration. If you‟re making the cakes in advance, decorate the cakes with the fruit just before serving. For more fresh food ideas and recipes visit www.freshforkids.com.au
