LITTLE ROCK, AR - The census of agriculture, which is taken every five years, produces a complete count ofAmerica’s farms and ranches and the people who operate them.

The census provides information on land use, ownership, operator characteristics, production practices, income, expenses, and other important topics.

“The census also benefits agricultural producers. When disasters and crop failures occur, for example, relief payments may be based on the data that NASS produces,”

says Becky Cross, director of the Arkansas Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), United States Department o Agriculture.

The Census of Agriculture provides the most complete agricultural

data available, including the only source of comprehensive county-leve1 data.

“The census provides information that will influence the direction of American agriculture for years to come,” Cross says. “Transportation, marketing locations, farm services, production practices, new technologies, and policy decisions all will be based in part on the census data.”

NASS will mail out Census forms in late December, to collect data for the 2012 calendar year. Completed forms are due by February 4, 2013. Producers can fill out the Census online via a secure website, www.census.usda.gov, or return their form by mail.

Federal law requires all agricultural producers to participate in the Census and requires NASS to keep all individual information confidential.

NASS especially wants

Hispanic and other minority farmers included in the census because they may he

underrepresented in national and Arkansas agriculture statistics. Hispanics who meet the definition of farmers

or ranchers are encouraged to Contact NASS and request to be added to the census

mailing list. The number of farms

with a Hispanic principal operator increased 10

percent nationwide during the 5 years between 2002 and 2007, according to the

2007 Census of Agriculture. These farms operated by Hispanic principal operators generated a whopping $6.7

bi11ion in market value of agricultural products sold and government payments.

What will the Census of Agriculture show in 2012? The 2007 Census showed that there were 20,351 farms in Texas operated by Hispanic principal operators, followed by 9,118in California, and 6,4754 farms in New Mexico, as the leading states in the number of Hispanic principal operators.

“By participating in the 2012 Census ofAgriculture, Hispanic producers can show the nation the Value and importance of Hispanics to U.S. agriculture,” Cross said.

is designed to teach students about the mission, goals, history, and internal workings of the FBI. This CREST will specifically focus on issues pertaining to civil rights, human trafficking and violent crimes in relation to the state

of Arkansas and its Hispanic community.

“Not only will attorneys benefit,” said Kimberly Brunell, supervisory special agent for the FBI’s chief division counsel, “but also community leaders, laymen, educators, business owners, and all those involved in the Hispanic Community will

benefi t from attending the program. Those attending will learn about the mission of the FBI in Arkansas and how to be a catalyst for improving the quality of life within our communities.”

Brunell emphasized that attendees will have the opportunity to identify and address problems affecting

their communities.“The FBI has had

a great response from holding its Citizens’ Academies,” Brunell said, “and we wanted to reach even more people and groups by having a shorter, more focused version of the Citizens Academy — hence, CREST was born.”

The New Latino Movement, serving as Latino outreach director for the Democratic Party of Arkansas, and founding the non-profit Arkansas United Community Coalition, which received a grant this year from the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation to continue its efforts to make life better for Latinos in Arkansas.

Reith said the mission statement of the AUCC is to empower the Latino community through “organizing and coalition building,” so that they can

take leadership roles and begin addressing the problems and goals of the community. “We’re really trying to take support to immigrants here in Arkansas to the next level,” she said. “To help immigrants help themselves, to support immigrants as leaders in their communities, as well as support the integration of immigrants into Arkansas more broadly.”

AUCC founding Board members included, Alan Leveritt, Susana Odaniel, Maura Lozano-Yancy and Jose Gomez .

For Arkansas to reach its full potential, Reith said,

we need that. “The basis for helping them help themselves is that immigrants don’t just have to wait for others to extend services or support to them,” she said. “Each of them has the capacity, the ability and even the responsibility in some ways to get more actively involved in their communities.”

Nearly 20 of the 50 influential Arkansans will offer presentations and demonstrations in sessions free to the public and a Festival of Ideas. Reith is scheduled to appear on September 22 at the Clinton School for Public Service, at 11:00 am.

El Dorado High School y la Escuela de Amity Centerpoint High ambos participan en la Iniciativa Avanzada de Arkansas en Matemáticas y Ciencias, o AAIMS por sus silabas en Ingles. Este programa de becas fortalece la enseñanza en clases avanzadas de matemáticas, ciencias y cursos de Inglés. El resultado es un aumento de estudiantes preparados para carreras de alta tecnología. LITTLE ROCK, AR - School is back in session, and this past week I visited two groups of students and

teachers whose work should encourage all of us about our future. El Dorado High School and Amity’s Centerpoint High School both participate in the Arkansas Advanced Initiative

for Math and Science, or AAIMS. This grant program strengthens teaching in AP math, science and English courses. The result is increased student preparation

for high-tech careers. Since becoming part of the AAIMS initiative, Arkansas has seen more students take AP courses, and those students are achieving higher scores

on AP tests. Why is this important? One of this nation’s greatest economic and intellectual threats is the declining number of students who are prepared

for rigorous college courses in mathematics and science. If students score high enough on AP tests, they can earn college credits for the courses,

El número de estudiantes que calificaron en la categoría de experto, o mejor, en los exámenes avanzados aumentó un asombroso 56 por ciento en matemáticas, ciencias e Inglés. En la Escuela Centerpoint High, que se unió al programa el año pasado, la mejora fue aún más asombrosa. En los dos años escolares anteriores, sólo un niño obtuvo una puntuación de tres o más en un examen avanzado. El año pasado, esa cifra se disparó a 31 estudiantes.El Dorado High School, una de las primeras escuelas participantes en el programa, ha visto un aumento constante en las

puntuaciones de cursos avanzados a lo largo de los años. Ese primer año, El Dorado tenía 46 estudiantes cuyas puntuaciones fueron consideradas competentes o más altas en los tres exámenes. giving them a step up as they work toward their degrees. That’s why we joined this program in 2007, funded by the National Math and Science Initiative. This past school year, the 39 participating Arkansas schools saw another marked improvement in student performance. The number of students who scored in the proficient category, or better, on AP exams rose an amazing 56 percent in math, science and English. At Centerpoint High School, which joined the program just last year, the improvement was even more staggering. In the two previous school years, only one child earned a score of three or more on an AP test. This past year, that number shot up to 31 students.El Dorado High School, one of the first schools to participate in the program, has seen a steady rise in AP scores throughout

the years. That first year, El Dorado had 46 students whose scores were deemed proficient or higher on the three exams. Last year, there were 140.We know that as time goes on, more and more jobs in Arkansas will be knowledge-based, demanding specific skills as never before. That is why

I have made it our goal to double the number of college graduates in Arkansas by 2025. Advanced Placement courses provide students with valuable preparation for of the work they’ll encounter in college. We not only need students to go to college, but we

need them to complete their degrees. There are a number of reasons why AAIMS works. The grant funding pays for additional training for AP teachers. It also provides financial rewards for teachers and students when qualifying scores are achieved. But more than anything else,

it raises expectations, and I’ve admired how our students have repeatedly responded to that challenge. It proves that if we give our young people the opportunity for excellence, they will respond, and often will amaze us. These AAIMS students are helping to usher in a new era of confidence

for the people of our State. Education is the fuel that powers our economy and our prospects for tomorrow. As our students excel academically, we all move faster toward the broader prosperity that is on Arkansas’s horizon.
