WASHINGTON, DC - Despite the conservative “border security first” rhetoric—the primary obstacle to comprehensive immigration reform – a recent USA Today article shows that border communities are safer on average than U.S. cities and a New York Times report suggests that net illegal immigration from Mexico may now be at zero. These findings underscore those in the Center for American Progress report, “Safer than Ever: A View from the U.S. – Mexico Border,” released in conjunction with the CAP event today “The State of U.S./Mexico Border Security,” both discussing the achievements made in reducing unlawful entries across the border and renewing the call for comprehensive legal reform—the absence of which has triggered a number of unintended and counterproductive consequences.

In 1969, at the age of twenty-two, a pregnant Norma McCorvey became the plaintiff in an abortion suit that later evolved into the infamous Supreme Court case, Roe v Wade that legalized abortion in this country. She spent 28 years in guilt-induced drug binges and abortion clinic jobs trying to justify her involvement in the legalization of abortion. McCorvey said, “after being Jane Roe and working in the reality of death at various abortion clinics, it began to eat away at my soul. God was my saving grace that literally saved my life.” In 1998 Norma’s faith journey eventually led her home, as she describes it, to the Roman Catholic Church. In her autobiography, “Won By Love,” she goes into great detail about her work in the abortion industry that ultimately led her to drugs and suicide attempts. Norma now has dedicated her life to spreading the truth as she lived it, including her involvement in Roe v Wade and what she saw in various abortion clinics.

WASHINGTON, DC - When it comes to prepaid telephone cards, every minute counts.

That’s why the federal government is always taking steps to ensure that the companies that sell them provide the minutes promised and clearly disclose any hidden fees that might decrease the number of minutes available for calls.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently took legal action against Millennium Telecard Inc., a New Jersey-based company that

sold prepaid telephone cards with such names as “Africa Magic,” “Viva Ecuador,” and “Hola Amigo.”

The FTC analyzed the cards and found that, on average, they delivered less than half of the minutes promised. At the request of the FTC, a court order was issued that temporarily halted the company’s deceptive advertising claims.

If you frequently purchase or use prepaid telephone cards, be aware of common fees that may decrease the value of a card. If you believe you’ve been mislead by a card provider you can also fi le a claim against that company.

Prepaid telephone cards are a practical way to make calls if you don’t have a long-distance calling plan with your mobile or home telephone provider. They also work well if you prefer to pay for these services in advance. Prices for the cards can vary from $2 to $20, and the number of minutes available depends on the rate for the place you’re calling.

The best way to use of these cards is by knowing exactly what you’re buying. That’s why you should always read the fi ne print and be aware of some of the most common types of fees.

There are many different

types of prepaid phone cards. Although some of them are well-established, others might be new to the market.

Retailers are not liable for the services offered by the cards. Stores are responsible, however, for not promoting cards they know don’t deliver as advertised.

If you have been a victim of calling card fraud, you can always fi le a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. The easiest and fastest way to do it is by fi lling out an electronic form online. However, you can also fi le a complaint by calling (877) 382-4357 or visit USA.gov and GobiernoUSA.gov.

As a result of increased DHS personnel along the southern border and a number of major improvements in technology and infrastructure, the Border Patrol can more effectively monitor the border and curb the fl ow of unauthorized crossings. Examples of the unprecedented resource deployment include:

* The amount of Border Patrol agents has doubled since 2004—now we have nearly 21,000, 18,000 of whom are deployed along the southern border.

* A quarter of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers are now deployed along the southern border with double their previous number of personnel assigned to the Border Enforcement Security Taskforces, focusing on disrupting criminal organizations.

* President Obama has

deployed and extended the mission of 1,200 National Guard troops to assist local law enforcement identify smugglers with sophisticated Defense Department technologies and fi ll manpower gaps.

* DHS has completed nearly 650 miles of fencing, including 300 miles of vehicle barriers and 350 miles of pedestrian fencing.

* The use of advanced detection technologies, including remote video surveillance systems, mobile surveillance, and thermal imaging systems, has been broadly expanded by DHS, enabling officers to monitor a broader swath of the border in real time, despite the diffi culties that stretches of high density areas and rocky terrain present.

The map below, included in the Center for American Progress report, presents the number of apprehensions sector by sector, as defi ned by the Border Patrol,

over time to demonstrate how the massive investments in manpower and infrastructure have altered migration flows, while highlighting the challenges that remain.

The decreases in Border Patrol apprehensions refl ect a dramatic downturn in attempted entries. In the San Diego sector, for example, there were more than 565,000 in 1992. By 2000, with signifi cant fencing in place and increased manpower, that number had dropped to 151,000. Though in 2000, El Centro had 238,000 apprehensions and Yuma had 110,000, they dropped to 32,000 and 7,100 respectively, by FY 2010. Challenges in the Tucson sector persist, with 212,000 apprehensions though experiencing a decrease of more than 400,000 between 2000 and 2010.

With pressure on the border diminished by these enforcement efforts and the severe economic downturn, we have a unique

opportunity to develop forward-looking immigration and border policies. If we fail to reform our legal system, however, we can expect the unintended by-products of this singular focus on enforcement to worsen when the economy improves. Attempting to choke off migration without providing alternative legal pathways to channel some level of legitimate economic migration has led to a number of perverse results. These counterproductive results include:

* Longer wait times for pedestrian and vehicular crossings, due to higher scrutiny of cross-border traffic, deters money being spent in the United States, have hurt U.S. businesses and workers that rely on this revenue from Mexico—our nation’s second-largest trading partner.

* The cost and danger of crossing have caused migrants to deepen their roots, rather than continuing the once-circular fl ow

of economic migrants between the U.S. and Mexico.

* Intending economic migrants have been pushed into the orbit of violent crime syndicates and ruthless drug cartels control virtually all illicit cross-border traffi c now, including human smuggling.

* Increased government control over vast swaths of the border has caused a relocation of entry points to more remote and more dangerous junctures; literally thousands of people have died attempting to cross the border since this buildup

began.* Migrants are more easily

forced into engaging in other illegal activities to escape the prospect of execution or violent reprisals against their families, as a result of the necessity of using a smuggler to cross in more dangerous areas and the monopolization of the market by cartels.

Now is the time to construct an immigration system that preserves the gains in control while disaggregating benefi cial migration from the violent drug trade.

Health-conscious parents often worry about what their kids are eating. Those greasy fast food French fries kids love might be cringe-worthy to parents, but it’s not just the foods kids request that parents should monitor. Adults and children alike have favorite

beverages that may or may not be healthy. But which beverages are benefi cial and which should be avoided? The answer to that isn’t always absolute.

Sweetened Drinks: Sweetened drinks can include some fruit punches and other fruit drinks that aren’t called “juice.” Labels on these beverages often

claim “Made with real fruit juice.” While that might be true, they’re all too often made with a lot of sugar as well. Typically, these drinks do provide some nutritional value, including some vitamins and minerals. However, these drinks are often high in calories, and the amount of vitamins and minerals provided is minimal.

Bringing a new life into the world is a gift and an honor. Nothing compares to it. And when it comes to feeding that precious little person, nothing compares to a mother’s breast milk.

If you’re expecting a baby, or planning to have one, now is the time to decide whether you can and should breastfeed. Most

experts agree that if you can, you should, and most mothers can!

Your breast milk comes from your body, just like your baby. So it’s a special “recipe” to help your baby grow, develop and stay healthy. In fact, breastfeeding is better for both of you.

Breastfed babies are less likely to die of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS ). They tend to get sick less often than

babies who are fed formula, and are less likely to get asthma. They are also less likely to become obese later in life. And your breast milk may even help boost your baby’s IQ.

As for you, breastfeeding can help you burn off that “baby weight.” It costs less than formula, and once you get started, it’s usually less trouble. It can help prevent postpartum depression, an illness that can

make you feel sad, hopeless or fearful after childbirth. It can help protect you from breast or ovarian cancer later in life, and can help prevent osteoporosis (brittle bones).

Breastfeeding is natural and healthy, but it isn’t always easy. Getting started is the hardest part, and the most important. Before you have your baby, tell your doctor that you want to breastfeed. Also, make sure the

hospital nurses and staff know. Ask them to give you your baby as soon as they can after you give birth, and to help you get started breastfeeding.

Even if you have to go back to work, you should be able to keep breastfeeding. You’ll need to pump your milk during the day. You can rent or buy an automatic pump. Or, if you qualify for WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition

Program for Women, Infants and Children), you might be able to get one free of charge.

Once you start breastfeeding, it’s best to keep it up for at least six months. Some experts say a year is better. But it doesn’t hurt you or your baby to keep breastfeeding even longer than a year. Remember, you only get one chance to give your baby the best start. And you are the only one who can!

Sodas: Sodas have taken quite a public relations hit in the 21st century, and that’s likely because they provide no nutritional value. What’s more, many sodas provide more sugar than a child’s body needs, which will lead to weight gain and possibly even cavities or tooth decay. Children typically love soda, so parents might find it difficult to stop kids’ soda consumption entirely. However, soda’s status as a sugary, high-calorie drink makes it one beverage most parents will want their kids to avoid.

Milk: Milk is perhaps the most difficult beverage for parents to gauge. Many parents assume all milk is the same. However, whole milk and 2 percent milk contains extra fat the body does not need. All milk provides valuable nutrients like calcium and protein, contributing to strong bones and teeth while helping build strong muscles. But when choosing which milk to give kids, choose fat-free (formerly skim) or 1 percent milk,

each of which provides the same amount of nutrients as whole or 2 percent without also providing unnecessary fat.

Water: Kids might be indifferent to water, but water helps maintain a healthy body temperature and can even make skin look better. Water’s also important in digestion, helping the body digest food. Kids should drink water every day. In addition, parents who are concerned about their children’s weight should e n c o u r a g e them to drink more water. The symptoms of dehydration mimic those of hunger, so kids who don’t drink enough water could be mistaking mild dehydration for hunger. Drinking more water might just help kids avoid eating an extra snack or two, indirectly helping them lose weight.
