Here we go, the days are gradually gettinglonger and the nights shorter. Of course, if wewere a canoeing club, we’d be in business, but unless this rain ceases soon, we’re gonnasink! In this month’s Hoggit, we have somefeedback from Cy’s visit to Sutton Coldfieldfor the director’s conference. Living thedream, Cy, living the dream.

Pete Davies has written a nice little pottedhistory of the Jake Spicer Toy Run, which, forme, marks the real start to the riding seasonand reflects a real carnival atmosphere, proving that sometimes good things can comefrom sad things.

Elaine has updated us on the final results of the MileageChallenge, which, for a small (ish) Chapter, we did not dobadly, thanks to Dorian and Elaine. As there is a posse doingthe Thunder-in-the-Glen rally this year, I would urge all thosetaking part to enter, let’s see if we can show that we can putserious miles on them thar Hogs!

Jay has kept us both envious and enlightened with eventsat the Golden Gate Chapter and the fact that they start theriding year on January 1st! California must be hell, all thosecoastal roads, mountains, forests and endless blacktopwithout the congestion of this small island. Where’s the funin that?

We have a new feature this month, ‘The Confessional’. Thisis open to anyone who wishes to unburden themselves ofany sin committed against a fellow biker. If you read thepiece, you’ll get the idea. This month’s contribution isanonymous as the ‘perp’ (or should I say ‘perve’?) does notwish to be named. I am okay with this, your secret is safewith me….

New Ladies of Harley Officer Tamara has taken office andwill be arranging a raft of events for the Ladies, and perhapseven allowing the odd Gentleman (and believe me, there aresome really odd Gentlemen about!) to accompany them.Tamara will, of course also be marketing themerchandise on Chapter nights.

The Barn Dance kicks off on the 1st March, and if you haven’t got your ticket, it’s just atenner and for that you get a great funevening with loadsa laughs and a hot mealthrown in. (I don’t mean literally thrown in,you will have plates…) Dress Western andbring your own alceehol. Yee ha! See San(Right) for tickets and check out the HoggitEvents Page for details.

There are also not one, but two competitionslaunched this month, “Birthday Tombola” by

Trish and “The Photo Competition with aDifference” by Jack, our photographer. Bothwill have prizes for the winners, so don’t beshy-get involved.

The 2013 committee also had their committeedinner at the Spread Eagle which is just about100 metres from Abingdon United Sports Clubwhere we have Chapter night, so perhaps abite to eat or cuppa before Chapter night?

February hooray!!! Another winter month left behind, after this month things should improve and thosewheels will see some action again. My wheels aresuspended for now so I can strip and clean the difficultareas much easier and apply some corrosionprotectant I think any protection is better than noneat all and well worth the effort.

So before we get moving maybe you will take sometime to tune in to HD H.O.G and your chapter.Chapters are about enjoying your chosen pastime anddon't let anything convince you otherwise. Chaptersprovide you with the opportunity to get out and socialise, enjoyyour riding days make friends, exchange your knowledge ofwhat life is about, what you do as an occupation to learn fromothers about what they do also. Between us we cover anenormous wealth of knowledge and information, fascinatinghow we become involved in what we do now as to where westarted off, often unintentionally.

Some encouraging info gained at the H.O.G Directors meetingin Sutton Coldfield. Oxford Harley Davidson is enlisted for itsupgrade in 2014 .

Harley Davidson sales gain a 25% market share during 2013!great news .

BMW still take the no1 spot but nobody needs every inch ofthe market to survive so HD is in a great position and sportbike sales continue to fall, riders are learning what we alreadyknow ....sport bikes are not the best tool for practical all dayriding or touring, but best at burning out the ass end after 3000miles flying through the hedge and sliding down the road notto forget 'I got there 10 whole seconds before that Harley.'

The newly advertised Harley Street 750 / 500 will first be seenand sold in Spain, Italy & Portugal, these are seen as thebigger market place, the UK will be supplied in 2015.

Cider Rally in case you haven't heard is ON! Pontins havebought the site and are accepting pre booked events, ticketsare available so move fast it's the accommodation that goesfirst. See Bridgwater Chapter website or Facebook page toget linked up. If you plan on going to the European Rally atBiograd to improve security and safety you will have to payextra to park in the sea front areas. St Tropez rally ; rally packsare ONLY available if pre registered. Benelux Rally is ofcourse as popular as ever accommodation again is the priorityheld on 4,5,6 June Luxembourg .

Hogsback Chapter are again running their Iron Hogs ride.

The rules .... It's an endurance ride you MUST visit as aminimum, 4 mandated dealerships Maidstone, Plymouth,Swansea & Edinburgh, within 48 hrs. Every additionaldealership visited will buy you 30 mins extra time, you mustget verified at every dealership visited and in any order youwish, the launch date is 1st - 3rd May but.... You can do thison ANY dates you decide. It's £15 entry which goes to charity,

on completion a pin & patch are awarded. Thereare 28 dealerships and approx 1800 miles will becovered to complete the circuit.

The Chapter Challenge mileage program; thank youfor taking part we new were not likely to win but it'sgood fun and reveals interesting no’s I know Elainehas an article on this so I won't duplicate it here.

Hi fellow riders, not long now until we have to startthinking about putting the bike back together, afterits winter clean and rest.Still lots of other stuff to do though, start of theSeason Meal at Shillingford 15th Feb then theBarn Dance Yee Ha!! on 1st March, so lots to lookforward to.There is a Bike Show at Shepton Mallett on the8th and 9th Feb, this is always a good day out.

What it's all about... ?The Bath and West Showground provides thecurtain raiser to a season of classic exhibitions. The Bristol Classic Motorcycle Show is almostas old as the International though and, despitethe name, is held near Shepton Mallet ratherthan in the Bristol Dockland Warehouse where itoriginated. Naturally given the time of year most of theaction happens inside and well away from any possibility ofsnow and wet. Attendance grows each year, with plenty ofroom to expand, with close on 20,000 people descendingon the halls last year.

Now is a good time to start planning which Rallies you wantto go to and get booking! Some you can get tickets on theday at the gate but others you will have to look up on website and get well in advance as they are usuallyoversubscribed, also if you just pay on the gate you don’t getyour badges or T Shirt? If you are anything like me you won’twant to miss out on another badge!! Or a T shirt! I don’t havevery many you see! Most importantly don’t forget the love of your life on the 14th

Valetines Day? Perhaps an extra polish of the headlights andan oil change maybe? She will love you for ever!

It was early Spring 1999 and Thames Valley Chapter was justunder one year old. A kind hearted biker by the name of “Rocket”Ron Coles suggested to the Chapter Director thatit might be a nice idea if the Chapter members gottogether and did something for a charity. Perhapssomething to do with poorly kids? “Great idea”,said the Director and, being a master ofdelegation, followed this up with “Get it organised”.

Rocket duly made contact with a charity by thename of Naomi House where he did his best toexplain to some numpty in authority that a bunchof soft-hearted bikers would like to come along andbring a load of gifts to put smiles on the faces ofall the poorly kids resident at the charity. “Oh Idon’t think we can allow that”, says numpty, “lotsof noisy bikes roaring up and upsetting the kids. No, not on. Perhaps one person in a car coulddeliver the gifts?” Being a polite sort of chapRocket explained to numpty that this was not goingto happen and thanked him for his time.

Now at this point in his life Rocket was a paramedic and itdawned on him that he had a contact at the children’s ward ofthe JR hospital in Oxford. A quick call there to a lady named Sallyestablished the fact that they would be thrilled if a load of Harleysturned up with stuff for the kids and since Easter was just aroundthe corner hey presto the Easter Egg Run was born.

On Easter Sunday 34 bikes left the TV Chapter house inMaidenhead loaded down with huge fluffy teddy bears and morechocolate eggs than Willie Wonka could eat in a lifetime. Onarrival at the JR we all parked outside the (old) entrance to thechildren’s ward and unloaded our cargo. The smiles on the facesof the children were wonderful to behold and everyone departedwith a nice warm glow.

The following year the event was repeated, again on EasterSunday, with more bikes, more teddy bears and even morechocolate. We also had a contingent of Belgian bikers from theHannut Chapter. This provided an embarrassing incident whenone of these guests gave his camera to the TV ChapterPhotographer in order for him to get a group photo and the poorphotographer dropped it onto a solid concrete surfacewhereupon it sort of – disintegrated. I know ‘cos I was thatChapter Photographer.

This was also the year that we first met an amazing young manby the name of Jake Spicer. Many Oxford members will knowthis name but the newer members may not. Jake was about 6or 7 and suffered from a very rare and pernicious cancer. Onhearing the sound of the bikes he was determined to come downfrom the ward to see what was going on. He was attached to adrip and very weak and so his bed had to be pushed into the liftand then out into the car park. He was instantly smitten with allthings Harley and insisted on sitting on a heavily customised andmuch fringed Heritage Softail Springer belonging to a great guycalled “Gopher”. Now Gopher is a very hardy chap but he shed

a tear at the joy on Jake’s face as he proudly sat on the Springer– with his drip still in his arm alongside the bike!

Over the next couple of years the Easter Egg Runbecame bigger and bigger and bringing Jakedown to meet everyone became a regular feature. Then came the formation of our beloved OxfordChapter and things moved up a gear. TV verykindly invited Oxford to become part of the rideand the Oxford dealership reciprocated byoffering the dealership as a meeting place fromwhich to set off. It was at this time that Sally at theJR plucked up the courage to tell us that actuallythey would prefer that we didn’t bring chocolatefor the kids but just toys and preferably not fluffytoys because of the risks of infection. Oh, andcould we perhaps do the run either before or afterthe Easter weekend because many of the kids gohome for Easter!!! So let’s get this straight, for thepast 4 or 5 years we have been bringing the

wrong stuff at the wrong time? Bugger.

Given that the Oxford dealership were now hosting the Toy Run(notice the name change?) it was decided that Oxford Chaptermight as well take the lead in organising future runs. It was atthis point that young Jake Spicer, by now a regular visitor toboth the dealership and Chapter events, was adopted as anhonorary Chapter member and our Chapter mascot. Those whohad the privilege of knowing Jake will never forget his courageand determination in the face of a serious and vicious illness.Sadly Jake lost his fight against cancer 5 years ago and in hismemory the Toy Run was yet again renamed – The Jake SpicerMemorial Run.

Please note, there is a correction to the printed version of thisedition. The Jake Spicer Toy Run will retain its current name.-ed.

Hello to the Ladies of Harley, I was delighted when I wasconfirmed as the new LoH officer and still am however (andmany of you will sympathise) I am now being hounded bythat dratted editor of The Hoggit for my LoH contribution!!!Well here it is.

I have been riding pillion for about 5 years when Ian wentthrough a midlife crisis and bought his first bike. We Joinedthe Oxford UK Chapter when he bought his Harley and thishas made an exciting change to our lives; we have had thegreat pleasure of meeting and making friends with a bunchof really lovely people. Ian became The Hoggit editor in 2013and I have stepped into the role of LoH officer this year. It isa privilege to give something back to the Chapter that hasgiven me so much. In addition to the role as LoH Officer I willalso be looking after all of the Chapter merchandise.

Most ladies in the Chapter will know about the LoH, but manymay think that because they don’t ride they cannot be part ofLoH. This is not at all the case, all the Ladies of the OxfordChapter are welcome to participate in the Chapter’sfundraisers, activities and outings regardless of whether theyown and ride their own bikes, ride as pillion passengers ontheir partners’ bikes or prefer not to ride at all. As such wewelcome all ladies and hope that you will join in all, or someof the LoH outings and activities which will be plannedthroughout the year. I am a pillion riding lady and as such Ineed those dedicated ladies Elaine Shepherd, Kim Taylor,Jane Nash and latterly Lesley Skinner who are RoadCaptains to organise LoH ride outs during the course of theyear.

We aim to meet up on the last Saturday of the month for apub lunch, a breakfast or perhaps afternoon tea, and thisyear we are planning additional outings based on yoursuggestions. I have already had a suggestion from JeanHarding who would like a trip to the theatre and that hasbeen seconded by Julie Parry and thirded (is that a word?)by myself. So if you have some ideas about something youwould like to do, please contact me with your suggestions.

I am putting forward the idea of a visit to The Stitch and CraftExhibition at Alexandra Palace sometime in October. I knowthat not all the ladies will be interested in this but some may.Not everyone may want to do what you suggest but it onlytakes a few ladies to make a really great outing and with itthe opportunity of making friends with people who share yourinterests.

Your input is essential to ensure that you get the most outof your club, so please contact me with your thoughts andsuggestions for LoH events or questions and I will attemptto action them where possible. Please check out The Hog-git, the members website Forum and the Members’ noticeboard at the Dealership for LoH information and updates.

I can be contacted via the message service on the Chapterwebsite Forum or via [email protected] or inperson at Chapter Night.

Now down to the nitty gritty I am inviting all Ladies ofHarley, Oxford UK to join in and share a lunch at the“The Boat Inn”, Canal Rd, Thrupp, Oxfordshire OX51JY on Saturday, the 22nd February 2014. We willmeet at the Dealership and leave at 12.00 noon. Thetables will be booked for 1.00 pm. Can you please letme know if you will be coming so that I can have someidea of numbers for booking? If it is easier for you togo straight there please let me know so that we are notwaiting for you at the Dealership.

I look forward to an exciting year with you all.

This was a short 50 mile ride for Dudley Perkins in SouthSan Francisco to Arlen Ness in Dublin, and included about20 bikes, all members of Golden Gate HOG, includingmyself. We left the dealership at 10am and headed southalong highway 101 to the Dumbarton Bridge into Union City.We rode through the historic Niles District and then headedthrough Sunol, passing the local stream railway, and thenonto more blacktop (the 680 Freeway) into Dublin.

Arlen Ness (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arlen_Ness) and hisson, Cory, are custom motorcycle builders and hadsignificant input in the design of Victory motorcyclesincluding the Vision. Arlen Ness now retails Victory, Indianand the Ness’s own custom bikes. The second (first) floormaintains a museum of Ness Bikes.

For those planning a visit to the West Coast, I highlyrecommend a trip to Arlen Ness. I will let the pictures explainwhy.

Happy Riding

It all began many years ago when I were just a lad. Mybrother, some three years older than me, had just put adeposit down on a brand new Kawasaki Z1000 with his firstpay packet. It was a beautiful machine, in electric blue withsilver pin striping and was the perfect ‘Babe Magnet’. I rodearound on a hand-me-down Honda 50 which had definitelyseen better days.

I was just sixteen and loaded with hormones and these selfsame hormones wreaked havoc with my mental state when, one Friday night mid-summer, I met a girl at a party. Not justany girl, though, a first-year university art student. Wedanced, snogged, danced some more and when the nightwas over, we were an ‘item’. The only problem was she wasnineteen and I was virtually a child. Now at sixteen I was bigfor my age and had just enough facial fluff to pass off aseighteen…maybe. When she; let’s call her Doris (becausethat’s her name) enquired after my profession I told her thatI was waiting to go into the Air Force to become a fighterpilot. (if you’re going to lie, best make it a whopper!).

Well we met up a few times after that and things weremoving on pretty rapidly, if you know what I mean. She hadnever been to my house, however, and was wanting to meetthe rest of my family, which would have blown my ever-growing deception sky-high. (even for a fighter pilot!). Dorisand I were going on a date and it required transport, in short,a motorbike. I was not going to take her on the Honda 50,if only there was a way I could get Sam, my brother to letme borrow the Kwakker. No chance. Nothing I could dowould persuade him to loan me his pride and joy. I offeredto clean it for a year, I offered to iron his shirts for a year.No dice.

To make things even more critical, Doris was giving offstrong signals that Saturday’s date would have a happyending. I desperately needed this for two reasons: one, thiswould give me unbelievable street-cred with my mates (asixteen-year old schoolboy and a nineteen-year-old artstudent…. the guys reading this know exactly what I mean!),and two, I was still a virgin and would be forever if I didn’tclose the deal on Saturday night. That’s how the Universeworks…right?

I needed a plan. Not just any plan, but a fiendish, dastardly, evil plan. Fortunately I am gifted with a twisted mind and soa plan so corrupt, so devilish, so…so…so brilliant began totake shape. I was going to get that bike for Saturday night,I was going to escort Doris to the party and on the way homeshe would reward me for my lying sneakiness.

Now Sam, my dear, dear brother had a weakness-he wasaddicted to anything sweet, but especially chocolate. Thegreedy git would eat the Crown Jewels if they were madeof chocolate. This would be his ‘Achilles heel’. The plancould not fail.

On the Thursdayafter school Istopped off at every supermarket and pharmacy on the wayhome and bought up every last bar of Ex-Lax. I got homeand wasted no time in melting the delicious-lookingchocolate into my Mum’s ice-cube mould, making sure thecubes were just about bite-sized. When they set, I mixed thehard chocolate with some jelly beans, liquorice allsorts andwine gums in a Woolworths Pick-’n-Mix bag.

On the Saturday morning I left the bag on my bed in my roomand the door open. I went out to play football and upon myreturn at around 1 pm, examined the bag and noticed thatindeed there had been pilfering of the said contents. Thetrap had sprung. With an acting performance that wouldhave won me an Oscar, I stormed into his room: “Youthieving git, you nicked my sweets, you greedy gimp…well, you may as well finish the rest, since you can’t control yourself…!” I flung the bag at him and strutted from the room withan air of abject disgust. He scoffed the rest. I estimated hehad consumed roughly 51 times the recommended dose.

Later, I went about my ablutions as I bathed, shaved anddowsed myself in pints of Old Spice. My tightest T-shirt (itwas the seventies), leather jacket were donned and I wasjust about to add another glob of Brylcreme to my hair whenI heard a muffled groan followed by the sight of a figure, hunched over and heading in the direction of the toilet. Therewas a sound from behind the door the like of which I hadnever heard and pray I never will. The smell permeated thehouse for days, like an evil spirit, refusing to leave, trappedbetween this world and the next. Sam dropped a stone inweight in two days and took a week before he had theconfidence to be more than ten yards from the toilet. His rawbottom consumed two-and-a-half jars of Sudocrem. Sharesin Andrex went though the roof.

How was my date you are wondering? Well as Sam was tooindisposed to stop me borrowing his blessed bike, I madeoff to collect the lovely Doris. We went to the party andafterwards stopped off in a quiet park where I had alife-changing moment in the petunia beds. I had got my wish.Doris dumped me the next day as it’s true to say thatsixteen-year-old virgins are terrible lovers. My street-credwent up for a few days until Archie Blenkinsopp stole a milkfloat and rammed a shed on the local copper’s allotment andupstaged me.

So, Father, I beg forgiveness for firstly deceiving Doris intobelieving I was an eighteen-year-old fighter-pilot in waitingand in fact turning her unknowingly into a paedophile.Secondly, Father forgive me for poisoning Sam, my belovedbrother who from that day on never ate another sweet. I dofeel that a certain amount of leniency should be dealt me asI saved him from a lifetime of obesity and Type 2 Diabetes.

Yours repentantly,

11

Forgive me Father, for I have sinnedagainst my fellow biker  .
