Welcome to our Buy Your Way Bull Sale No. 7!

This is our largest and most consistent group of bulls (in terms of quality) offered to date and we hope you like what you see here.

If you’re new to our sale, you will find that this format is different than most, but then we’ve rarely been accused of following the crowd. We’ve always sold by private treaty and wanted to continue to do so, but also wanted to give others the chance to have a first choice without going to a traditional auction. This is the most simple, cost effective way for us to accomplish our goals and has been well received. Because of this format and the option of placing proxy bids, we have committed to providing the bid history to you on your purchases to reassure you that we are handling your money as if it were our own.

About the bulls: These bulls are built from generation upon generation of proven AI sires. While many operations use the term ‘proven pedigrees’, if you look at the average accuracies we have listed with our Reference Sires, we believe you will see what we mean.

Sire selections here are not made quickly, so we don’t expect you to make your selections without a little research, either. If you would like to come before sale week, or early in the sale week, to see the dams of these bulls, just let us know and we’ll make arrangements for you to take a look. If you do make the trip, you can expect to find honest, hard working cows in a beef production environment. We also want to say thanks again to Garrett Bulk for all of his help. His dedication, hard work and fresh ideas continue to be an asset to our operation.

Insurance Insurance will be available. We strongly recommend purchasing insurance if you do not take your bull sale day.

Delivery / After Sale Care A $50 per bull discount is available to buyers who take their bull(s) home by March 15 (maximum $100 per buyer). We will feed bulls free until April 1, and then for $1.75 per day until Spring turnout time. Bulls will be delivered free up to 100 miles from Hofmann Simmental Farms. We will work with you on economical delivery beyond that point.

Announcements / Liability Announcements made at any time during sale week take precedence over printed material. Anyone attending this sale attends at their own risk. Hofmann Simmental Farms or their representatives or employees will not be responsible for any personal injury or damage to any attendee or his/her property.

Health All bulls have received two rounds of IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV, 7-way blackleg, and at BSE were poured with Ivermectin, drenched with oral wormer and vaccinated with Spirovac VL5. All bulls were tested negative for PI BVD. All bulls are virgin and therefore free of trichomoniasis. Bulls are free from currently known genetic defects. (Find more bull management information, inside back cover) Bull Fertility / Guarantee All bulls were fertility tested by Dr. David Salava, DVM,Clay Center, and sell as guaranteed breeders for the first breed-ing season. This guarantee does not include loss due to abuse, neglect, injury, illness and/or acts of God. This guarantee is not meant to replace mortality insurance. In the event a bull is not a breeder or if there are other problems with a bull, we will work with you to the best of our ability to ensure your satisfaction.

Semen Interest Hofmann Simmental Farms is retaining a 1/4 semen interest in all bulls unless otherwise announced.

Catalog Data Weights: All weights have been adjusted for age. Age: Age in months, as of March 5, 2016 Scrotal measurements are the actual measurements taken by us at approximately one year of age. Dr. Salava’s measurements will be available after semen evaluations. Frame scores are expressed in a range, i.e.: 5- (5.0-5.4), 5 (5.5), 5+ (5.6-5.9) Frame scores are based upon a hip height and adjusted for age.

Color: All bulls are either noted as black (heterozygous or red carrier) or homozygous black, and have been confirmed as such either by pedigree or test. All red bulls are non-dilute by pedigree.Bulls noted as *Black have homozygous black tests pending. Polled: All bulls are noted as Polled, Hetero Polled, Polled/Scurs or Homozygous polled. Homozygous polled bulls have been confirmed as such either by pedigree or test. Some bulls noted as polled could be homozygous polled but were not tested and cannot be confirmed by pedigree. Bulls noted as *Polled have homozygous polled tests pending. (our policy on color and polled is that if we know about it, you will know about it) Disposition: Because we select for disposition and cull any problem stock, we are confident you will not have temperament problems with these bulls. That said, we do acknowledge there are differences between them. We again followed the BIF guidelines, but in addition to chute scores, we have scored them by handling each bull individually in a small pen. Following are abbreviated BIF descriptions for scores of 1-3 [descriptions of exit scores and descriptions of wild cattle are omitted] 1 = Docile. Mild disposition. Gentle and easily handled. Stands

and moves slowly during

processing. Undisturbed, settled, somewhat dull. 2 = Restless. Quieter than average, but may be stubborn during processing. 3 = Nervous. Typical temperment is manageable, but nervous and impatient. Ultrasound Ultrasound was performed by Mike Lindell of High-Tech Beef. CUP Lab of Iowa interpreted the data and the American Simmental Assn. made adjustments for 12 months of age and contemporary groups. Because spring and fall bulls should not be compared against each other (nor should ultrasound readings be compared from one herd to another), the IMF is expressed for each group of bulls as top, middle or bottom third of their contemporaries. Purebred and percentage bulls in the same calf crop are compared against each other for this trait. EPDs & Indexes EPD’s are based upon a deviation from the breed average [above or below (-)] for the base year for the particular trait. You cannot compare EPD’s from one breed to another. EPDs may change from the time this catalog was printed until registration papers are transferred.

Using API and TI

First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API; if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference (dollars per cow exposed) between bulls. The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another--or how much you can pay for one bull compared to another.

Example: A bull scoring 100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a 50 API bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000).

A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more infor-mation about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org

*Discount is up to 5% of your total bids (highest bids on individual bulls, combined) made during the first half of the week, but not to exceed 5% of your total purchase price. Discounts transfer to bids placed in the second half of the week if a bidder’s early choices move above their price range. (See examples at the bottom of the page)

Bull Management

Bulls have been fed in large pens with access to a small pasture for exer-cise. Bulls were fed to gain 3#/day with a diet of free choice grass hay, limited alfalfa and a corn/DDG/vita-min/mineral mix. (For longevity we are feeding less corn and replacing it with more DDG and alfalfa.) The ultrasound data confirms that they are fit and not fat. The average adjust-ed backfat of all bulls is .16. We have managed the bulls this way because the last thing you need is to turn out a bull that will fall apart.

The health of the bulls has again been outstanding.

Bulls left with us after the sale will be cared for to make the transition to pas-ture conditions as smooth as possible. We will make every effort to see that those bulls get ample exercise. Please contact us if you have any questions.

The Buy Your Way sale ring advantage

If your first pick rises out of your price range, you have plenty of time--at least hours, if not days--to either adjust your budget or select another bull. Up until the final closeout on the ending day, you can still capitalize on the full-ring advantage. The more our bid sheets are used on the last day, the fewer scrambles everyone will need to make. We believe your bottom line deserves the time and attention necessary to make a good decision regarding the genetics for your herd.
