MAYORS UPDATE
HOFFMAN ESTATES CHAMBER OF COMMERCE & INDUSTRY 8
The Village of Hoffman Estates continues to enjoy growth in several areas including economic development, infrastructure improvements and new home construction. A priority for many years, the construction of the Barrington Road interchange on I-90 is anticipated to wrap up in late 2016 with all tollway improvements to be completed in 2017. New restaurants have joined the ranks of Hoffman Estates eateries, additional entertainment and retail options are anticipated to further boost the activity at 59/90 and the first housing developments since before the economic downturn began construction in 2015.
One of the most significant projects, in the works for many years, is the I-90 Barrington Road interchange. Once open, the Barrington Road interchange will no doubt have a positive impact on the entire region. AMITA Health (previously Alexian Brothers Health System) will gain much needed public safety and patron access from the tollway while residents and business patrons will have a more direct route to the interchange via Barrington Road, said Hoffman Estates Mayor Bill McLeod.
New bus stops for express service on I-90 and a PACE Bus Park & Ride facility will be integrated into the innovatively designed interchange, alongside major improvements to pedestrian and bicycle access. Companies nearby will have direct accessibility to the Park and Ride facility and to bike trails, allowing employees
additional transit options and reducing some area traffic congestion.
Additionally, two more future pedestrian and bicycle crossings of I-90 at Bartlett Road and underneath I-90 and Hoffman Boulevard just west of the CN tracks will join the Barrington Road crossing in providing more connections between Hoffman Estates residents and businesses.
Connectivity is important for Hoffman Estates particularly as we have a sprawling Village landscape, McLeod said. The fact that we dont have a downtown is even more reason for us to strive for features that enhance safety, well-being and ease of use to everyone in the community.
2015 also included a stormwater
improvement project that will reduce flooding in the Jones-Highland subdivision. Improvements were made possible through a grant of $900,000 from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago for rehabilitation of the water and sewer infrastructure in problem areas.
The village completed the second year of its five-year street revitalization program using $6 million in new and existing revenues to reconstruct and resurface 23 streets throughout the village. In addition, Federal Surface Transportation Program funds paid for 80 percent of the $2.6 million reconstruction of Bode Road.
The village street revitalization program will continue in 2016 with $6.2 million

budgeted to reconstruct 11 streets and resurface 10 others; as well as $1.3 million in STP funds to resurface Hillcrest and Moon Lake Boulevards, with IDOT approval for two additional projects in the future. Federal funds and the villages new revenue sources allow the village to make neighborhood infrastructure improvements without increasing residential property taxes.
Improvements to intersections, repaving the streets and repairing sidewalks are critical components to making our community safe and attractive for people to live and work no matter how they choose to travel, McLeod said.
Projects that were conceptual in 2014 are now under construction, including the Adesa Auto Auction complex; Main Event Entertainment Center; Trumpf Technology Center; a Duluth Trading Company retail store; Woodfield Acura; a medical office building; and two McDonalds, a Burger King, Culvers and Wendys restaurants.
Two new Ala Carte restaurants, Sweet Carolines Crab-n-Cue and Morettis, made their debut in late 2015 near the intersection of Barrington and Higgins Roads. Hoffman Estates also welcomed the Hoffman Estates Beer Garden, which leased space at the Village Green, sharing its revenues with the village.
The village submitted two applications to the State of Illinois for Enterprise Zone designations for the Prairie Stone Business Park and the Huntington 90 area (which includes the AT&T campus). If chosen, State and local incentives will become available for existing and potential businesses to develop or redevelop properties in those areas.
More people will be living and working in Hoffman Estates soon. The first housing
developments since before the economic downturn began construction in 2015 include 17 single family homes in the Bradwell Estates subdivision and the initial phase of an 81 home project by MI Homes in the Bergman Farms subdivision at the old Bergman Farm property at Algonquin and Ela roads. New home construction is exciting for us and is a good indicator of the villages health, McLeod said. Were anticipating great interest in the new housing options being offered.
Under Hoffman Estates ownership since 2009, the Sears Centre Arena achieved its highest event income in 2015, attracting 87 events with over $750,000 in event profit generated from new promoters alone. From the growing base of ethnic events to well-attended national sporting and community events, the arena continues to boom. Success is anticipated to continue as it becomes the new home of the Chicago Bulls NBA Development League team, Windy City Bulls, starting in November 2016.
McLeod praised the group involved in bringing the deal to fruition. The Sears Arena management team, village staff and elected officials were really instrumental
in creating a win-win for the Chicago Bulls and the village. We look forward to a long partnership with Bulls leadership, the organization and its fans.
In addition to continued growth throughout the community, the villages Fire, Police and Health and Human Services departments continue to excel. These departments are led by top-notch professionals who work hard to ensure their teams are providing excellent service to our residents, McLeod said. They also provide ways for interested residents to explore through the Citizens Fire and Police Academies and Police Explorers programs.
The village continues to make use of powerful social media tools, its website, Citizen newsletter and other platforms to inform the community about exciting events and relevant programs and services.
We realize how important it is to keep people informed and need to make sure we are on top of our game, McLeod said. New in 2016 is an updated version of the free mobile app; set to launch in February. For more information about village programs and events, visit www.hoffmanestates.org.

Hoffman Estates enjoyed a banner year in 2015 as more than a dozen new commercial and industrial projects were announced with initial groundwork completed. In most cases construction is now underway and the new enterprises are expected to open throughout 2016, noted Kevin Kramer, economic development director for Hoffman Estates,
We will be attending many grand openings, but we may not have as many big announcements during 2016, he said, but that is OK because that just means that the market is balancing out.
For instance, Ala Carte Entertainment purchased two vacant restaurants on the
southeast corner of Barrington and Higgins Roads and, after renovation, opened a Morettis Ristorante and Pizzeria and a Sweet Carolines Crab-n-Que in 2015 on the long-vacant former sites of a Max and Ermas and a Lone Star, respectively. Ala Carte also purchased the former TGI Fridays, which became available, and plans to open a third restaurant on the site. Coincidentally, the firms owner, the Hoffmann family, enjoys the similarity between their last name and the name of the village.
Elsewhere in the village, interest in fast food restaurants has also been hot. Two new McDonalds restaurants will be
under construction in Hoffman Estates in 2016 one at the Barrington Square Mall (replacing an existing McDonalds) and the other is on the site of an old brick two-story building along Roselle Road between Higgins and Golf roads.
Not far from there a Wendys restaurant is also being transformed to conform to the new corporate image for that chain, and on the southeast corner of Barrington and Higgins roads, a new Burger King has recently opened.
A combination of Culvers restaurant with a drive-thru and a Mobil gas station is under construction near the intersection of Route 59 and I-90, finally bringing that

area of town two much-desired facilities a gas station and a fast food restaurant, Kramer said. It should be open by late summer 2016.
There is also news on the retail front. Duluth Trading Company is building its first Illinois store next to Cabelas in the 59/90 entertainment district. Formerly a company that sold exclusively via catalog, Duluth Trading is in the process of expanding and is expected to bring in customers from a large radius.
Sugarjones, which specializes in cupcakes, cookies and wedding cakes, opened its door in the Poplar Creek Shopping Center near 59/90 in January, and a new three-unit strip out-lot center that will be anchored by Starbucks is also under construction nearby.
On the entertainment front, Hoffman Estates will soon become home to a Main Event family entertainment center featuring laser tag, bowling, arcade games, a high ropes course, food and drink. Main Event caters to customers who are older than the Chuckie Cheese audience and younger than the Dave and Busters audience, a true fun family experience, Kramer noted.
We envision families making a day of it by coming out in the morning and spending time at Main Event, followed by a show or event like Sesame Street Live at the Sears Centre in the afternoon and then finishing up with dinner at an area restaurant, he said.
In order to promote all of the businesses in the 59/90 corridor, Hoffman Estates has re-designed its 59-90.com website, Kramer said, taking a regional approach to promoting the entire area, regardless of town borders because residents dont see boundaries the way we do in village government.
There has also been news with regard to corporate/industrial users. Adesa Auto
Auction, the second-largest wholesale auto auction company in the United States, has purchased 65 acres west of Prairie Stone Business Park. It will soon hold weekly auto auctions for car dealers and rental companies. The auctions will not be open to the public but it is hoped that this enterprise will draw people from all over the Midwest to stay in area hotels and patronize local restaurants.
In addition, TRUMPF, a German firm that manufactures lasers used in metal cutting, has purchased five acres on which they plan to construct a technology center and showroom. They chose the site because of its I-90 visibility and its close proximity to OHare International Airport and two of its primary competitors.
I-90 is contributing to Hoffman Estates good news in other ways, as well. The multi-year project to widen the Illinois tollway from the Kennedy Expressway to Elgin is well underway with the new outer lanes complete and work beginning on the inside lanes, including the extra wide innermost lane and shoulder that will accommodate PACE transit buses, said Michael Hankey, director of transportation and engineering for Hoffman Estates.
The inner lanes and shoulders are also wider so that if a decision is ever made to install rail on I-90, there will be space for it, he said.
Plans call for the widening to be largely complete by the end of 2016, as will work on the expanded interchange at Barrington Road and the Park & Ride facilities there for commuters using the buses. New transit stops for express buses are being built along I-90 for trips to OHare and the CTA Blue Line in Rosemont. There will even be a pedestrian overpass of I-90, allowing drivers to park in a PACE lot on the north side of the Tollway near the Hilton Garden Inn and walk across the pedestrian bridge to catch a bus heading toward Chicago on the south side.
Simultaneously, Barrington Road is being widened from Central Road to Hassel Road, with enhanced sidewalks and bicycle paths being constructed, Hankey said.
New residential development is also underway once again in Hoffman Estates. K. Hovnanian is completing 17 single-family homes on the north side of town in a subdivision called Bradwell Estates. That community is expected to be built-out by the end of 2016.
Residential construction is also underway on the old 37-acre Bergman farm at Ela and Algonquin Roads. M/I Homes of Naperville is building 81 single family homes at Bergman Pointe and models are open with the first phase currently under construction.

WINDY CITY BULLS
2016 COMMUNITY GUIDE & BUSINESS DIRECTORY 17
The Chicago Bulls have announced they will soon be expanding their footprint in the Chicago area by establishing an NBA Development League team, the Windy City Bulls, which will be based at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates.
The Bulls have had relationships with D-League teams in other cities in the past, but by establishing a direct affiliate team, it will give them a chance to have new, young players and established players who are rehabbing from injury, hone their skills nearby, under the watchful eye of Bulls coaches. It should make for a more seamless transition from one team to another, said Ben Gibbs, general manager of the Sears Centre.
These development league teams are seldom too close to a big city, so this will be a unique situation and an opportunity for the Bulls to further extend the popularity of their brand in the suburbs. Professional mens basketball has never been played in the suburbs. We have had minor league
hockey, baseball and even arena football, but this will be a first for the game of basketball, he added.
The Windy City Bulls, which will be similar to a baseball farm team, will play 24 Sears Centre home games per year between mid November and April.
We expect these games to offer fans a smaller version of a Bulls experience at the United Center, but with the same quality and entertainment value. Not everyone is fortunate enough to attend a Bulls game in Chicago, but this will extend that opportunity to suburban families, Gibbs said.
The Bulls have made a long-term commitment to the Sears Centre and we are very excited and optimistic about that, he added.
This new partnership is great for the village of Hoffman Estates and the Sears Centre, said Mark Koplin, assistant village manager. The Bulls have a great name and a reputation for a high quality game
day experience, so we expect them to bring fans here from a 15 to 20-mile or greater radius which will definitely be a positive thing for the village and its businesses.
People will love having the opportunity to see players who are very likely to go on to play in the NBA someday, he added.
Gibbs and Koplin also expect that having the Windy City Bulls at the Sears Centre will give a boost to other events in the arena because those attending basketball games will likely see promotions for other events and choose to return. The fact that the Bulls organization has chosen the Sears Centre as its minor league venue will also give other event promoters confidence that the Centre is a quality place to hold an event, Gibbs said.
The team received almost 3,600 name suggestions from fans during the first round of the Name the Team campaign, which ran Nov. 11-25, said Beth Esler, manager of corporate communications

for the Chicago Bulls. The Windy City Bulls name was chosen
in February; it was in the top three nalists nominated in the campaign. The other two nalists were Great Lakes Bulls and Heartland Bulls.
The team received name suggestions from all 50 states, as well as several international submissions from countries including Brazil and the Philippines, and respondents ranged in age from elementary school children to 89 years old.
Fans interested in purchasing season tickets or corporate sponsorships can visit http://www.bulls.com/dleague or call (847) 396-7070. Be sure to check the website often for updates on local community events and promotions which will be held to build excitement and interest before the season starts, Esler said.
The Chicago Bulls are extremely excited to establish an expansion NBA Development League team in Hoffman Estates, said Michael Reinsdorf, president and COO, Chicago Bulls.
We look forward to promoting the game of basketball, extending the reach of the Bulls brand, and engaging with families, schools, nonpro t organizations and businesses in the Northwest Suburbs. Our games will bring a new element of entertainment to the area and we welcome the opportunity to connect with the current fan base and build relationships with new fans, he added.

2016 COMMUNITY GUIDE & BUSINESS DIRECTORY 19
Changes have been fast and furious in recent years on the sprawling campus of Hoffman Estates St. Alexius Medical Center.
For instance, the $125 million Alexian Brothers Womens & Childrens Hospital opened in 2013 and it now provides convenient access to a broad continuum of advanced, sub-specialized pediatric care like pediatric neurosurgery and pediatric surgical oncology that families in Chicagos northwest suburbs previously could receive only by traveling much longer distances.
That addition to the campus made a big splash and was accompanied by lots of fanfare because it would affect so many
lives. The latest change that has occurred,
however the name change to AMITA Health may have been heralded in advertisements, but patients and members of the community will observe little in the way of changes in anything but signage, said Julie Busch, assistant vice president of communications.
Our joint operating agreement with Adventist Midwest Health and the branding of our joint company as AMITA Health will bring our services to a larger population. But for our patients and communities, it will largely be seen as business as usual, she said.
This is our response to the changes happening nationally in health care. You have to collaborate today to survive. This is a way for us to create efficiencies, coordinate care and share resources that deepen our sub-specialization capabilities, Busch said.
However, the AMITA Health partnership is unique among Chicago health care providers and totally unlike the many mergers and acquisitions that have been going on around them. Under their joint operating agreement, the two owners remain separate and true to their different religious backgrounds. Each health system also keeps its assets. But they operate

cooperatively in order to increase their footprint in the area and offer a better value to their patients, Busch said.
The resulting company is the third-largest health system in Illinois, encompassing nine hospitals and an extensive provider network of more than 3,000 physicians serving the west and northwest suburbs of Chicago. Nevertheless, Adventist Midwest Health remains a part of Adventist Health System of Altamonte Springs, FL and Alexian Brothers Health System remains a part of Ascension, the largest nonprofit health system in the country and the largest Catholic health system in the world.
The new name for the joint company reflects our promise to deliver the most efficient, high-quality, faith-based care, said Mark A. Frey, president and chief executive office of AMITA Health, when the agreement was announced.
In fact, the name AMITA was inspired by the words meaning in several languages: friendship in Italian, honesty and truth in Hebrew and spiritual light and boundlessness in Hindi, reflecting the organizations core values of friendship, truth and mutual respect for all, as well as its faith-based call to healing.
The Hoffman Estates medical campus includes three facilities: AMITA Health, St. Alexius Medical Center, Hoffman Estates; AMITA Health, Alexian Brothers Womens & Childrens Hospital, Hoffman Estates; and AMITA Health, Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital, Hoffman Estates.

PLATZKONZERT GERMANFESTSept. 9-10, 2016
Autumn is the time for celebrating all things German, and that is what the Hoffman Estates Arts Commission does each September with its free Platzkonzert Germanfest, an annual event featuring German singing, musicians, dancers and food at the Village Green, 5510 Prairie Stone Pkwy.
Platzkonzert literally means open air concert in German. The outdoor event features brats, sauerkraut, potato salad, strudel and other German fare; beer and wine on sale; German entertainment for all ages; and activities for the children. The Hoffman Estates Park District even brings its portable climbing wall that is transformed into the Matterhorn for the day, while a raucous stein-carrying contest adds to the fun for adults.
This year the committee is adding a 5K run through the Prairie Stone campus, as well as additional contests, entertainment and concerts.

SUMMER SOUNDS ON THE GREENJuly and August
Enjoy seven weeks of Thursday night concerts at the Village Green, located next to the Sears Centre Arena, during July and August. This is Hoffman Estates own outdoor concert venue where blankets, chairs, food, wine and candles are all welcome.
Sponsored by the Hoffman Estates Arts Commission, these free concerts feature music to appeal to all tastes from pop to country, swing and acapella. Kids are welcome, and there is plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the outdoor venue. The onsite concession is open so you can purchase snacks, food items or cocktails. Enjoy exceptional music under the open skies and close to home.
