    Runner, musician, math whiz

Long before last falls cross country season, Sophie Chatas met with her coach tofigure out how to get from here to there. The doe-eyed, slender brunette wanted totransform herself from a strong runner to a great one. Chatas was hungry for one lasttrip to the state meet, after finishing back in the pack107ththe previous year.

Her drive was most impressive, says Lori Baldwin, head crosscountry coach at Columbus School for Girls. Chatas began trainingdai ly, even though she was s t i l l in the middle o f a successfult rack season , one tha t would see an 11 th-p lace f in i sh a t thestate competition in the 1,600-meter run. She trained throughthe summer. Even changed her form: We worked on her footstrike, got her arms relaxed, recalls Baldwin. Forgoing soccer,Chatas t ra ined aggress ive ly deep in to c ross count ry season ,

She went out fast that November morning at the 2011 state championship. But with 200 meters left, I was in 30th place, Chatas recalls. I dug down. I

began passing peoplewhat a feeling! She wound up 13th: a school record,a personal best and an All-Ohio designation (given to state meet qualifiers witha 3.5 GPA or better).

Determination like this is hard-wired into Chatas. The 18-year-old daughter of Geoff and Katie Chatashes OSUs chief financial officer, shes an ardent communityvolunteeris not just a gifted athlete. An honor student and National Merit Finalist,Chatas has garnered awards for exceptional scores on the National Latin Exam and,as CSGs top math student her junior year, received the Honda-OSU Math Medal.Shes interned with OSUs Reading Recovery Program, helping youngsters read. Astaff member of the school newspaper and student council president, shes a visibleleader with what she admits is infectious school spirit.

Shes musical, too. A French horn player, Chatas has been a member of theYouth Philharmonic of Central Ohio for four years. In her final performancewith them, shes happy to see Stravinskys Firebird Suite on the program, which, she says, has a great horn part.

Digging in when things get tough, however, doesnt apply just to her running.Math mayve been easy in the beginning, Chatas confesses, but I reallyhave to work in BC Calculus this year. Its an AP class, and its a challenge. Her AP success rate, however, is high. An AP Scholar with Distinction, sheearned a 5 (the top score) on each of the five AP tests shes taken in a rangeof subjects, from biology to comparative government.

After a trip to London with her family this summer for the Olympicstheyvegot tickets for beach volleyball, diving and track eventsand Greece toconnect with distant relatives, Chatas will attend Williams College inMassachusetts. The Division III school has recruited her for track and crosscountry. Chatas hasnt committed to either yet. Or a major.

    But witnessing Olympic track stars in competitionthat mights p a r k a w h o l e n e w r o u n d o f C h a t a s d e t e r m i n a t i o n .

Prashant Khullar alumnus of SIMC, Pune (Finance) shared some handytips that each and every aspirant must keep in mind while preparing themfor Group Discussion round.

    1. Entering the GD: Contrary to what many esteemed trainers say, oneshould only enter the GD when one has valid points. Being the first to doso, leaves a good impression on the evaluator. But take the move only if you have complete knowledge of the subject.

    2. Rule of thumb: Enter before half of the group has spoken. But do notrepeat a point, or be lengthy or irrelevant. Intervene, if someone else isgoing on an irrelevant track.

    3. Be Expressive: Use quotes, facts and figures, statements, everyday lifeexamples to express a clear chain of thoughts. Also it might leave a goodimpression on the examiner and help you score well.

    4. Prepare your thoughts well: It is always good to enter the GD whenthere is silence. Do not just go on and on and on with only your opinionatedview. Remember, it is a group discussion. Allow others to speak too. Using

body language to show entry and exit is yet another important way.

Eg: Slightly lean forward when you plan to enter and return to normal

position just as you end the point-this unconsciously gives your fellowaspirants cue to step in.

5.Strong Conclusions: Summaries should only have points alreadymentioned and a conclusion may have a short summary but needs to have

point wise conclusions which the group has come to. Do not add new points which you might have missed, however good they may seem.

    6. And lastly, aspirants can use idea generating codes. One of them is PopBean- People objects places behavior events actions names. It can help tothink alternately and bring something new on the table.

These are some basic yet very important tips that will help any aspirant tofeel a bit more confident in GD.

FOCUS ON SAFETY AUDIT AT INDUSTRIES

Though safety apparatus is being reviewed nothing is materialisingFrequent industrial accidents notwithstanding the talk of safety audithave remained an empty rhetoric. It has become a normal practice toreview the safety apparatus vis vis the protocols beingimplemented for occupational safety and health whenever a majoraccident occurs but in practice nothing concrete is materialising, saytrade union leaders. Another point for deplorable track record, somedue to safety negligence and others due to pollution, is stated to belack of supervisory mechanism for want of manpower by the APPollution Control Board, Factories, Fire and other concerneddepartments. Though there was a proposal to locate theheadquarters of APPCB in the city due to location of several industrialunits, there appears to be no serious move in this regard as yet. Thedeath of one worker and injuries sustained by 10 others at AnjaneyaAlloys Limited in a furnace blast at AP Special Economic Zone onSunday is a case in point on the need for regulator safety audit. Someof the workers injured in the accident told Ministers Ganta SrinivasaRao, Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu and CPI (M) team led by State Secretariatmember Ch. Narsinga Rao that despite warning on water leakage no

immediate action was taken to halt production. Its a matter of serious concern that there is no let-up in industrial accidents. Wehave to review the safety situation and conduct audit each industry-wise, Mr. Srinivasa Rao said. Visakhapatnam has witnessed some of the worst industrial accidents. Two engineers of a private firm diedfollowing suspected gas leakage in June at Visakhapatnam SteelPlant. Frequent gas leakages have been reported in some of the unitsat Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City, Parawada. Three workers died infire at Hetero Drugs, Nakkapalli last year. While 19 died in anexplosion at oxygen pressure reduction station of VSP on June 13,2012, cooling tower collapse at HPCL Visakh Refinery claimed 27lives on August 23, 2013. All these accidents buttress our claim ondeteriorating safety status of our industrial establishments mainly

It isestimated that about 50 squads will be on the move to check drunkendriving and about 1,300 police including a few armed squads will be onduty to restrain the revellers. Mr. Atul Singh also pointed out that partyorganisers should obtain prior permission from the police for hostingprogrammes and all programmes should be restricted between 8 p.m.and 1 a.m. The organisers should provide adequate securityarrangement and will have to take up the responsibility of installing CCTV cameras at strategic points at the venue, he said. Mr. Singh alsopointed out that any kind of obscenity such as obscene dances and eveteasing will be strictly condemned and people will be taken to task. Hecautioned that alcohol will not be served without obtaining specialpermission from the Excise Department. BEACH EROSION MAY BE SEVERE THIS YEAR

Scores of visitors to R. K. Beach were in for a shock on Monday as

they watched furious sea waves advancing towards the coast, menacingly licking the walls of the footpath along the beach roadfrom Kursura Museum to R.K. Beach. This severely eroded beachstretch had been a constant reminder to the gruesome impact of cyclone Hudhud. The erosion activity, which normally occurs duringthis time of the year, is, however pronounced, threatening to cause apermanent damage to the beach. During the cyclone, vast quantitiesof sand had been deposited on the land from the beach leading to asevere loss of beach. But experts point out that seasonal erosion mayhave dealt a double blow to the beach stretch. Scientist in charge of the National Institute of Oceonography NIO V.S.N. Murty said coastalerosion was a common phenomenon but this time the erosion mayhave been more marked. During the northeast monsoon, sea erosionoccurs.
