Fencing
• While in Madrid, Rizal practiced fencing andpistol shooting.
• Rizal became master of the foil, saber anddueling sword, and acquired a legendaryreputation for grace and technique.
• Rizal’s mastery of sword and as a marksman wasput to the test when he challenged AntonioLuna on a duel.

Chess
• He played chess and bear several Germans andEuropean friends and acquaintances.
• In 1877, soon after first meeting SegundaKatigbak, he played parlor or azotea chesssomewhere in Trozo. His play was bad — he had just learned the guy with Segunda was herfiancé; he had been asked to do a sketch of herbecause his talent for drawing was well known,but the sketch he came up with was wretched;every time she glanced at him he would blush — and he lost the game.

Marksman
• Rizal was an ardent pistol shooter, a passion he shared with the German framen. In fact Rizal’s friend and companion Jose Alejandrino called it an
‘addiction.’
• Rizal's guns, "the smith" and Wesson number 3 revolver, or popularly known the Magnificent, can be found at the AFP Museum at Camp Aguinaldo inQuezon City.
• Rizal made this assessment of his skill: Shooting slow fire at 25 meters, cockinfor each shot and firing one-handed in the traditional duelist’s stance, he
reported he could place 20 consecutive shots into 20 cm, roughly 8 inchessquare. This is very good shooting, especially since we do not know the gunRizal used, the caliber nor make. • Rizal was the first Southeast Asian ever to master the art of japanese sport.
• He even put up some GYMs in the cities of Calamba and Dapitan, which bof various judo grassroots there.

Music
• According to Mrs. Asuncion Bantug, Rizal’s grandniece, “among the arts, mfirst love.”
• However, music did not come easily to him. His contemporary, Dr. Galicanorecalled that “He even found it hard to hum or whistle a simple melody . Whthe melody turned out to be so out of tune.” But determined to excel in muhow to play the flute and practiced hard. He also took up solfeggio, pianoculture.
• Rizal was not deemed as an excellent flutist or singer but he went on with h
inclinations by composing his own songs. Most of the songs were his poems music. His popular novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo also containpassages and references concerning music.
