HMRC BAME Women’s Network
The Network delivers ground breaking, innovative career development initiatives (e.g. Knowledge Burst events & Reverse Mentoring)
and an action orientated model to improve leadership capability, help BAME women use
their skills and achieve their potential and embed engagement with the Board.
BAME representation at first senior management grade has increased from
2.9% (2005) to 6.25% (2012). BAME engagement scores 10% more positive than non BAME colleagues.
24 Network members secured promotions/lateral moves.
BAME employees represented 8% of the workforce with under-
representation at middle and senior management, staff engagement was low, talent was being wasted.
The Network challenged the status quo and
promoted cultural change. It is a self sustaining
leading equality organisation
in HMRC.
Since the launch I have attended a number of knowledge burst and speaker events organised by the Network which have been very
informative and interesting. By participating my confidence has increased and I have rediscovered
skills which had lain dormant for several years. I want to say thank
you to the BAME Women’s Network and those who have facilitated its
existence as it has made a difference to me.

The dedication, drive and support of the BAME Women’s group, along
with their passion for driving the race agenda forward and achieving
outcomes in times of austerity, is admirable. They have achieved
phenomenal success in the short time they have been up and
running. I began to see a real change in HMRC. I am immensely proud of the BAME Women’s group
for all their efforts in bringing about this change.
