in brackets) The Core Programme offers Literacy and Numeracy at Entry, Level 1 and Level 2. These classes work towards the National adult Basic Skills Exams, which take place on monthly basis for which an £8 bonus is paid.
Our fully equipped IT suites offer a chance to learn or improve your IT skills leading to the nationally recognised new CLAIT and CLAIT Plus or EDCL qualifications. Once you have reached Level 2 in all Maths and English you can do advanced IT in the form of Computer Aided Design.
We offer a wide range of Social and Life Skills modules that generally involve 30 hours of study. Current modules available are Drug and Alcohol Awareness, Assertiveness and Decision Making, Budgeting and Money Management, Family Relationships, sex and relationships and Parenting.
There are also excellent Art and Design and Ceramic s courses leading to Open College qualifications up to Level 3.
For those who want to study above level 2, we offer a higher level-learning course. With the help of your probation and various charitable agencies we will help you to arrange funding. Once you are in possession of your course materials you can attend a class every morning, if you are employed somewhere else within the prison tutorial sessions are available in an afternoon All courses will be incorporated into a sentence plan target and have to be approved by probation, the public protection unit, lifer team etc, for appropriateness.
A variety of providers including the Open University deliver correspondence courses in a number of subjects. If you are unsure of which subject you wish to study an openings course may help you decide. These are short introductory courses from the Open University designed to help you decide if you are ready to commit yourself to a full programme of study.As part of the vocational education programme we offer full time courses in Painting and Escorting and Wall and Floor Tiling. These extremely popular courses are 15 weeks long and lead to nationally recognised qualifications.

The accommodation for Life Sentence Prisoners are:
B, C, D, E, F and G Wing. You will be allocated a Wing according to your requirements.
B Wing is our oldest accommodation, which houses 95 prisoners
C and D Wings hold 195 prisoners, split into two spurs – one of 97 and the other of 98. There are four double cells; two on each spur and the rest are all single cells. These two Wings run the CALM and ETS courses.
E Wing holds 191 prisoners, split into two spurs – one of 95 the other 96. There are mixtures of single and double cells depending on the spur. E Wing houses men who are predominantly convicted of sexual offences and runs the SOTP course.
F Wing has recently been refurbished and holds 28 single cells. F Wing runs the PASRO course.
G Wing holds 180 on two spurs – one of 78, the other of 102. All are single cells. G Wing is the Drug Support Unit and runs the VDT.

Sport and recreation The PE department consists of a full time Physical Education Officer managed by a Physical Education Senior Officer based at HMP Grendon.
The facilities are a weights/fitness centre supported by a sports field. Supervised activities include: Football; Cricket; Weights; Volleyball; Softball; Circuit Training and Cardio Vascular Training.
There is also the opportunity to walk around the sports field during daylight hours.
Courses delivered by the PE department include; Active IQ Level 1 Active Healthy Living; Active IQ Gym Instructor Level 2; Active IQ Instructing Circuits; RSPH Nutrition Foundation.
The PE department support Tackling Drugs Through PE offering minimal intervention plan. As well as the above there are sessions available for GP referrals and a health club offering individual programmes and advice.
The delivery of PE officers educational and recreational sessions Monday – Thursday and alternate weekends.

Education placements are available at numerous education establishments including Derby, Burton-on-Trent and Stoke-on-Trent colleges (Sept/Jan/Easter start)
Training placements are available at a variety of locations within Derbyshire / Staffordshire.
Paid work is sourced by individual prisoners. Generally prisoners are allowed to work within a 20 mile radius of the establishment. If the prisoner will be continuing the employment after release the radius can be extended up to 40 miles.

In NVQ Catering we carry out Level 1 and Level 2 City & Guilds in catering. These are recognised qualifications within the catering industry. Not much info but hope it helps a bit.
Learning and Skills Most of the provision is part-time. Access to courses is linked with sentence planning priorities. There are good links between Learning and Skills, Industries and Programmes.

Programmes:The unit aims to assess
individual prisoner’s need to:1. Determine if they have a
DSPD.2. Make recommendations
to address behavioural traits that have been exhibited before and
during the assessment phase.
The 17 week programme consists of various
psychometric tests, psychiatric interviews, broad
based group work, education, industrial and
charitable work, and individual work with multi-
disciplinary staff.
Employment Prisoners have shared responsibility for the
cleanliness of the wing, including structured cleaning
phases during the 17 week programme.
During the programme prisoners will not be allocated
off-spur work.

PART TIME
There is a 6 week education phase to the 17 week
programme, covering a wide variety of topics.
A certificate is awarded upon completion.
