Dovegate Therapeutic Community’s Purpose and Function
HMP Dovegate Therapeutic Community (TC) has 200 places, which consists of four communities (40 places), the Assessment and Resettlement Unit (ARU - 20 places) and the innovative High Intensity Programme (HIP - 20 places).
HMP Dovegate TC is a therapeutic community environment in which everything is organized to provide opportunities for personal change. It is a system of living where everybody is everybody else’s therapist. The concept is that a group of people living together are able to change through their interpersonal experiences of each other. Within HMP Dovegate TC this experience is structured around group therapy and group decision making in the form of community meetings. Community members may also be involved in other forms of therapy such as Cognitive Behavioural Programmes and art based therapies.
We look at an individual’s experience of the world up until the moment they join a TC and challenge some of the views that have shaped prisoners thinking and behaviour. It will also challenge how they believe the rest of the world perceives them. Most people believe that when they walk around in the world people perceive them in a particular way. For many people, the most painful experience is finding out that people perceive them as somebody very different from whom they thought they were. Once prisoners are clear about what problems need to be resolved and what things need to change, HMP Dovegate TC will offer a unique environment to learn and practice the new skills required for them in a safe and supported environment. This environment includes not only the therapy groups but also work, education and leisure time opportunities.
The High Intensity Programme is a unit where prisoners with specific individual needs can address them on a one to one basis alongside group meetings. Prisoners will be referred to the HIP after the initial assessment period on the recommendation of the assessment unit staff team. This Unit
offers 1-2-1 work and specific interventions in order for the prisoner to gain the skills needed to transfer to a TC.
In conclusion HMP Dovegate TC will help prisoners make sense of things. It will help them understand their past and also what is available to them in the future. HMP Dovegate TC will enable them to find out how they became the person they are and to understand why they committed their offence/s and lived the life they have, up until they join a therapeutic community. It will enable them to learn new skills in order to change their life, so that in the future and within their life they no longer create victims of others or themselves.

Lifer Team consists of 6 Lifer Officers, 2 Probation Officers, Chaplain, Psychologists, Healthcare and IMB. Each Lifer will have their own Personal Officer and Back Up Personal Officer. A mentor system operates at Drake Hall for all lifers. When lifers first arrive a ‘meet and greet’ meeting is set up as soon after their arrival as possible in order for them to meet the Lifer Team. This gives contact on arrival and time for questions to be answered.
Outwork Scheme is available where lifers will start on a voluntary placement and work towards full time paid employment - a number of different schemes available. A successful number of outworkers have secured employment upon release.
Lifer Days have been held at Drake Hall and depending upon demand, can be held in the future.
Listening Scheme available for lifers to get involved in, as well as the diversity committee and food forum.
