The new Silk Road: Bringing the world to Hong Kong
The Chinese government’s One Belt, One Road initiative – a modern adaptation of the historical Silk Road – is a development strategy aimed at promoting economic cooperation and transnational trade between Asia, Africa and Europe. Through the establishment of infrastructure and trade links reminiscent of the centuries-old Silk Road, the initiative looks likely to accelerate the region’s advancement towards becoming the most important economic zone in the world, while opening up a wide array of business possibilities for Hong Kong.

OUTSTANDING ACADEMICS
The academic standards in Hong Kong are among the highest in the world. The Hong Kong government prioritises education and ensures significant funding, keeping the costs to students and their families as low as possible. An emphasis on innovative teaching programmes, increased student engagement, and accountability to government, contributes to the city’s world-renowned higher education system.
SAFE AND SECURE
With a remarkably low crime rate, Hong Kong is rated as one of the world’s safest cities, bringing peace of mind to young students and their families. The Economist Intelligence Unit’s most recent Safe Cities Index ranked Hong Kong as one of the safest cities in the world.
CAPTIVATING CULTURE
Hong Kong is one of the world’s most multicultural cities, where traditional Chinese elements blend seamlessly with a rich colonial past. The city’s culturally diverse workforce contributes to Hong Kong’s well-earned reputation as a true international metropolis, with a large expat community. Hong Kong is also the ideal place to learn and embrace Chinese language and business practices.
LEADING BUSINESS
Hong Kong is one of the world’s leading and most dynamic financial centres, currently ranked 4th in the Global Financial Centre Index. Located a stone’s throw from Mainland China at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta, the city is the number one choice for many international companies to establish their regional headquarters.
GATEWAY TO CHINA
Hong Kong is a highly appealing trading partner and investment conduit for Mainland China. Regular flights and several new rail and road links ensure smooth and speedy travel across the border, while Hong Kong offers the benefits of a simple and low tax regime, free market policies, and free flow of information.

THE TOP CHOICE FOR MAJOR DISCIPLINES
The majority of Hong Kong’s top-scoring HKDSE students prefer to continue their studies at HKU ahead of other local universities, choosing programmes such as law, engineering, economics and business.
HKU brings together new communities of leading international students every year, with undergraduates from 33 countries admitted in 2015. The Hong Kong government is highly supportive of overseas students, facilitating visa applications, providing subsidies and scholarships, allowing students to work during their studies, and inviting graduates to remain and work in Hong Kong if they wish.
In partnership with Cambridge: Engineering excellence at HKU
The HKU-Cambridge Joint Recruitment Scheme for Engineering gives first-year Mainland Chinese engineering students the opportunity to complete their degree at the University of Cambridge. Since the programme’s launch in 2012, the top engineering student each year at Cambridge has been from HKU, and 100% of participating students have achieved first-class results, which is equivalent to the Dean’s list. The scheme’s success is partly attributed to HKU’s rigorous screening process for engineering applicants from Mainland China, which involves over 60 HKU professors travelling to Chinese cities to interview a shortlist of applicants.

During my first year at HKU, I was able to represent my country as a Student Ambassador (SA) and share my views on a wide variety of global cultural topics. I also helped local students gain a better understanding of the world outside of Hong Kong and, most importantly, to learn about and respect other cultures. HKU provides experientiallearning experiences that impart the hands-on skills and competencies expected by employers.
HKU has arguably the best employment record of any university in the world, reaching over 99% every year for the last decade, including a 10-year low of 99.4% during the 2008 global recession. In recent years, changing trends in student mobility have seen an increasing number of students across Asia, especially in Korea and India, choose HKU over universities in the U.S. and Europe to take advantage of unmatched career opportunities in Asia’s home of business.

Social media success
In 2008, HKU undergraduate Ray Chan co-founded the online platform and social media website 9GAG. Raising US$2.8 million in seed funding in 2012, and currently valued at over US$900 million, 9GAG is one of the top five most followed brands in the world, engaging more than 100 million people a month.
“Try before you reject” is one of the core values of 9GAG, and something I learned at Ricci Hall when I was studying law at HKU. Since then I’ve tried many things, including raising money from Silicon Valley and starting 9GAG with my co-founders.
EXPERIENCE-BASED EDUCATION FOR CONTEMPORARY CAREERS
HKU continues to modernise and enhance our undergraduate curriculum to stay current and consistent with industry opportunities and expectations. In recent years, the University moved away from an emphasis on traditional learning methods to undertake more experiential learning experiences that impart the hands-on skills and competencies expected by employers, such as innovative thinking, planning and decision-making, leadership, teamwork, negotiation skills, and the ability to work globally.
HKU has arguably the best employment record of any university in the world, reaching nearly 100% everyyear for the last decade.

WORKFORCE TRAINING THROUGH INTERNSHIPS
HKU undergraduates spend many hours preparing themselves for the exciting beginnings of their new careers. CEDARS is the University’s dedicated student support body driving the professional development of undergraduates through industry seminars, career preparation workshops, experience sharing, networking events, recruitment talks, interview training, and summer job placements. The number of our student internships increases every year, and currently stands at over 4,000. The work typically requires a high level of competency, such as completing a research project for a company or developing a comprehensive marketing plan. The majority of placements are in Hong Kong, with 9% in the Mainland and 5% further afield.

JOB PLACEMENTS: FROM THE CLASSROOM TO THE BOARDROOM
Last year, HKU graduates were offered employment in a multitude of leading sectors such as finance, banking, and technology, which included firms like Apple, Google, and Microsoft, both locally and overseas. According to the CEDARS Graduates Employment Survey, employers indicated that HKU graduates significantly outperformed their counterparts from other local and international universities across a wide range of proficiencies.
BEGINNERS’ GUIDE: THE HKU MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME
Established in 1997, the HKU Mentorship Programme is an exemplary initiative through which 500 undergraduates are paired with a mentor for a year of cross-discipline learning. The mentors are leading members of society and professionals or experts in their fields, who guide students through a two-way participation exchange that extends the HKU learning experience beyond the classroom.

A global perspective
My first impression of Hong Kong was that there is so much going on! I was invited to new events every day – festivals, meetings, concerts, dinners and hikes. The professors at HKU are top notch and very passionate about their work. My Chinese Cultural Revolution lecturer constantly challenged the class to think critically about history, and all of my journalism professors have been actual reporters, so they teach from their experiences.

DRIVING DIVERSITY AT HKU
INTERNATIONAL UNDERGRADUATE AND POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS
HKU actively recruits undergraduates from Mainland China and further afield to drive our internationalisation efforts and increase cultural diversity on campus. The University has made significant strides over the past decade, and is proud to now accommodate the maximum number of international students permitted under current government policy. The Hong Kong government places no restrictions on the number of non-local postgraduate students, and as a result HKU attracted over 24,000 postgraduate applications from Mainland China and abroad last year.
INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE STUDENTS
Last year, HKU welcomed over 1,000 predominately undergraduate exchange students from its partner universities around the world. More than a third opted for business and economics programmes, reflecting the appeal of Hong Kong as one of the most important financial hubs in Asia.
SUMMER PROGRAMMES
HKU offers over 50 summer programmes across different faculties for secondary school, undergraduate, and postgraduate students seeking a life-changing international adventure. The HKU Summer Institute provides an excellent platform for overseas students to spend a summer studying in Hong Kong, while gaining invaluable experiences and memories in one of Asia’s most vibrant cities.

OVERSEAS OPPORTUNITIES FOR HKU STUDENTS
HKU encourages students to think about their education in an international context, and strives to equip scholars with the confidence and competence to succeed in an increasingly globalised world. Part of this effort is creating plenty of opportunities to study outside of Hong Kong.
Enrolling in exchanges
HKU presents undergraduates with incomparable opportunities to learn and live overseas. Last year, over 1,400 students studied abroad in semester or year-long exchanges as part of the HKU Worldwide Student Exchange Programme, which partners with some of the highest ranked universities in the world. In 2015, new exchange agreements were formalised with the American University of Central Asia in Kyrgyzstan, the University of Chicago, the University of Eastern Finland, the University of Geneva, George Washington University, the University of Georgia, and Sabanci University in Turkey.

Psychology studies at Oxford
I went to the University of Oxford for an academic exchange, which has been the most fruitful year of my life. In addition to studying experimental psychology with world-leading scientists, I gained programming skills, critical evaluation of scientific papers practice, and sophisticated data analysis techniques. We often went to pubs with guest speakers and had casual chats. I felt honoured to talk to world-class researchers and to know about their work.

COLLABORATIVE LEARNING ACROSS CONTINENTS
HKU has created numerous worldwide collaborative learning programmes, most commonly for joint PhD or dual degrees, with the following institutions:
TEAM VICTORY: ASIA’S NUMBER ONE MBA AT HKU
As one of Asia’s youngest Master of Business Administration (MBA) programmes, HKU is enormously proud to have its MBA course ranked number one in Asia for the sixth consecutive year by The Economist's world MBA rankings. HKU’s MBA programme finds its edge in collaborations with leading business schools, leveraging the strengths of each organisation to provide a global networking platform and curriculum representative of real-world dynamics.
The intensive 14-month programme is unique in offering students the opportunity to study in four of the world’s key finance hubs. It begins with a one-month China immersion course in Beijing, followed by nine months of core and elective subjects with an Asia focus in Hong Kong. In the final four months, students complete elective subjects with an international business focus at London Business School, Columbia Business School, or Fudan University in Shanghai, depending on their chosen track.
The success of these partnerships has led to the launch of a joint EMBA programme between HKU, London Business School and Columbia Business School, providing the HKU MBA community global reach, access to leading business schools around the world, and valuable international alumni networks.

A global experience
I was lucky enough to be selected for the MBA World Summit in Barcelona – an exclusive event for MBA students from all of the top business schools. I met recruiters from Merck and got hired as a Senior Project Manager for Supply Chain Management. This global role gives me the chance to work with people from many different countries and regions. Every day at work feels a little bit like being back in the MBA at HKU.

ASIA-PACIFICHKU AROUND THE WORLD
In addition to teaming up with Mainland China across a multitude of initiatives, HKU continues to earn its reputation as one of the most international universities in the world through establishing and nurturing collaborations and partnerships with an abundance of overseas universities, bringing students the benefits of a genuinely global education.
HKU online: Connecting students across campus
Many HKU students are avid bloggers, and the campus is home to the popular student blogs hKUDOS and hkUdaan. hKUDOS is an online platform for bloggers from various backgrounds, interests and academic disciplines. Covering topics from fashion, to politics, to city living, arts, and events, it’s how many students enjoy navigating the many features of HKU. hkUdaan is an Indian community blog, created and run by Indian students at HKU. Drawing its name from the Hindi word udaan, which means ‘flight’, the blog gives students a glimpse into life on campus and in Hong Kong.

Examining architecture in Shanghai
During a semester in vibrant Shanghai, I was able to get a genuinely local experience through interacting with Fudan University students who sat in on some classes. Hearing different views of architectural issues was really useful, as it brought light to the conversations we were having. My architectural studies still benefit from my semester in Shanghai and the urban nature of the city.
CREATING MASTERS OF BUSINESS
The MBA programme with Fudan University is one of the longest running and most successful partnerships HKU has fostered in Mainland China. Since its launch in 1998, the programme has produced more than 3,800 outstanding graduates, many of whom now hold key positions in the business and public sectors across the Mainland.

CONNECTING WITH MAINLAND CHINA
As the oldest university in Hong Kong, HKU has cultivated excellent ties with Mainland China, which continue to flourish through HKU’s satellite offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. Students benefit from incomparable opportunities through cross-border exchange programmes, academic collaborations, and research initiatives. With China emerging as a global superpower, and a key business and trade partner with the rest of the world, it’s important that all HKU students understand the current policies and practices of Mainland China as part of their journey at HKU.
OVER 3000 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN HKU'S CHINA VISION PROGRAMME IN 2015
HKU’s China Vision programme invites students to benefit from interactive experiential learning experiences in the place where knowledge and expertise are booming – Mainland China. In 2015, over 3,000 HKU students have taken part in around 200 projects in megacities such as Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou, and remote villages in Gansu and Guizhou. Last year, participants travelled across the Mainland to learn about the country’s culture, economic development, diplomacy, and international relations. The programme’s wide-ranging topics cover everything from current affairs, to arts, science, and architecture, supporting students in applying their academic knowledge in a real-world context.
KNOWLEDGE SHARING
Welcoming HKU students from the Faculties of Architecture, Business and Economics, and the Journalism and Media Studies Centre, the Shanghai Study Centre offers a platform to supplement their studies through knowledge exchange and engagement opportunities with Mainland China.
PIONEERING RESEARCH
The HKU-Shenzhen (HKU-SIRI) and HKU-Zhejiang (HKU-ZIRI) Institutes of Research and Innovation are extensions of HKU’s research capabilities in Mainland China. The Institutes aim to enhance research in cutting-edge disciplines, support independent innovations, and strengthen partnerships between HKU, local government, and the Pearl River and Yangtze River Delta regions.
DIVERSE OPPORTUNITIES FOR MAINLAND STUDENTS
In 2015, the Hong Kong government introduced a pilot programme for Mainland Chinese students who excel in areas outside academic achievement. The initiative supports HKU’s drive towards greater diversity on campus. Last year, two national athletes and several award winners in the National Olympiad subject competitions were admitted to HKU under the scheme.
CROSS-LEARNING IN HEALTHCARE
HKU-Shenzhen Hospital is a public hospital with comprehensive facilities built by the Shenzhen government and managed HKU. It redefines patient care standards and drives healthcare reform in China. Currently in its third year of operation, the hospital serves as a clinical skills and professional ethics training centre, enriching HKU’s medical programme and research capabilities through an exclusive partnership.
BESPOKE TRAINING PROGRAMMES
HKU’s Executive Training programme consists of a wide range of short-term schemes for Mainland government departments, educational institutions, and enterprises that are designed to suit participants' learning needs and busy schedules. Programmes typically include lectures delivered by HKU professors or industry experts, workshops, site visits, and discussions.

Various sections of HKU provide support and education to ensure HKU has a discrimination-free and equal opportunity campus. Amongst them, the Admissions and Academic Liaison Section of the Registry organises outreach programmes for students, as young as primary school age to assist their careers and life planning, from all areas of Hong Kong.
The Faculty of Education, currently ranked 6th best in the world, has developed a youth-mentoring initiative that encourages promising students from local secondary schools with low rates of admission
to consider tertiary education. Undergraduate student-teachers provide support, guidance and encouragement, both academic and social, to secondary school students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to help bring about positive change in their lives and enhance their social capital, academic achievement and emotional well-being. This mentoring experience also develops student-teachers' interpersonal skills, understanding of self and others, and builds their capacities as change agents and advocates for social justice in the wider community.
SCHOLARSHIPS
HKU is proud to prioritise the intellectual and social contributions of its students to ensure the most talented and intellectually gifted students are granted access to HKU, its regardless of financial considerations. Thanks to the generosity of the donors, the University offers substantial scholarship schemes to both local and non-local students. HKU also awards current students with enrichment and merit-based scholarships for expenses like accommodation, exchanges, overseas research trips, student projects, and the development of service learning schemes.
Through HKU’s commitment to the values of equity and social justice, we continue to drive and encourage the pursuit of tertiary education across all communities of Hong Kong, actively encouraging applicants with disabilities and those from disadvantaged or minority backgrounds.
A CONNECTED COMMUNITY
HKU offers generous scholarships and service learning opportunities, a dedicated student support body, outreach programmes, and mentoring schemes – all to realise its vision of being a university for all

Learning through teaching
I’m a volunteer for Inter Cultural Education Hong Kong – an organisation that helps local secondary school students learn more about themselves and the world. We partnered with UNICEF on a programme that simulated an environment to teach students what life was like as a refugee. I enjoyed interacting with local students, understanding their aspirations, and learning more about refugees myself.

Community service after graduation
Many HKU graduates continue to contribute their talents and knowledge to serve underprivileged groups beyond their university years. One example is Beyond the Wall, formed by young HKU architecture graduates and students, which improves the learning environment at schools in Nepal through the installation of stimulating outdoor teaching devices. Another is Launchpilots, which was established by Chung Jah-ying, a graduate of the prestigious Bachelor of Business Administration (International Business and Global Management) degree programme. One of 11 start-ups supported by Swire Properties in 2015, Launchpilots connects university student event organisers with sponsors in Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Expanding empathy in Hong Kong
I took part in a one-month summer programme organised by the Society for the Welfare of Autistic Persons. Volunteers are paired up with a child with autism or down syndrome to act as their buddy for the month. Our responsibilities included helping the children with their holiday homework, assisting with outings and classes, and disciplinary control. The unique experience gave me the chance to understand the kids, talk to their parents, and learn how to communicate with people living with these conditions.

SERVICE LEARNING: MAKING EDUCATION MORE MEANINGFUL
Following a decade as HKU's Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Albert Chau reflects on how HKU enriches its learning through community service. HKU has always made serving the community an integral part of our students’ learning experience. Back in 1950, the HKU Students’ Union established the Social Service Group to serve underprivileged people in Hong Kong and China. In 1995, the Students’ Union went on to create the China Education Association – a registered charity providing financial subsidies, classes and tutorial groups to students, while renovating schools in remote villages in Mainland China. When HKU celebrated its centenary in 2011, the SERVICE 100 scheme was introduced to connect hundreds of HKU scholars with community service opportunities, making significant impacts on societies around the world.
To enhance the inclusion of service learning in HKU curriculums, the University’s faculties and departments have increasingly incorporated experiential learning methods into their teaching activities. More recently, HKU students have initiated and driven multiple social enterprises to tackle the UN’s set of Sustainable Development Goals and Millennium Development Goals to help put an end to poverty and hunger, support gender equality, combat climate change, and promote fair trade. HKU has also sponsored our students to attend conferences such as the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris, and the Clinton Global Initiative in Florida.
Service and learning at HKU are two sides supporting the same coin. Through community service endeavours, the University fulfils a commitment to improving the living conditions of underprivileged communities, particularly in Asia, while realising its vision of nurturing responsible future world leaders.
