Celebrating Our Campaign Success…Thank You to All Donorsi am so excited and very proud to share the accomplishments of The Medical Center Foundation’s recent Healthy Journey Campaign. it is through the generosity of over 8,900 donors that the Foundation not only met its nearly $9 million goal, but exceeded it by reaching over $15 million. Thank you for your unwavering support.

it is important to stop and celebrate this milestone – because of YoU, and the many ways you have supported us, The Medical Center Foundation has raised over $42 million since 1999. As the area’s not-for-profit community hospital, northeast Georgia Medical Center serves all, regardless of their ability to pay. We receive no local tax support. The Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization, and our mission is to improve the health of the community through cultivation of relationships and partnerships to increase community support of northeast Georgia Medical Center. The Foundation provides sound stewardship of contributions, providing a vital source of funding for community health improvements, capital improvements, technological advancements, and program enhancements.

As you will see in this report, we have made great progress to improve the health of the people of north Georgia. The journey of creating a healthier northeast Georgia is a marathon, not a sprint. We will carry on in the spirit of our late Board Chairman Woody Stewart, who passed away in January 2012 (see tribute on page 34), and we are fortunate that Jim Moore, current Board Chairman of The Medical Center Foundation, has picked up the torch to lead us into the future.

So even though our work continues, we pause to catch our breath, give thanks to you, and celebrate with you…for the next phase of the journey is just around the corner.

With deepest gratitude,

nancy d. Colston2

nell’s Prayer Garden was made possible through donations to The Medical Center Foundation from more than 150 donors who helped create a lasting legacy in honor of late Foundation Chair emeritus nell Whelchel Wiegand. The 2,200 square foot garden intimately surrounds the exterior of the dawn McKibbon Memorial Chapel outside nGMC’s north Tower. The garden is complete with stone privacy wall, a water feature, and plantings of hydrangeas and a tea rose brought from nell’s home garden. nell’s Prayer Garden is an extraordinary garden and serves as a spiritual place of reverence and solitude for patients, their families and staff.

This garden was made possible by a signature gift and maintenance endowment by Philip and Mary hart Wilheit, Sr. and their family, Jeff and hart Payne and Philip and Addie Wilheit, Jr. The garden is named in memory of Philip and Mary hart’s parents, Tom and Jane eve Wilheit and Jack and Mildred Keys, who were known for their love of beautiful gardens and landscapes.

The Wilheit-Keys Peace Garden is the largest of five donor gardens on the nGMC campus and can be enjoyed from indoors or out as it spans 20,000 square feet across the north Tower’s main concourse, connecting north entrance 3 to the dawn McKibbon Memorial Chapel. The garden includes a rainwater collection system and is an easily accessible destination for patients, families, visitors and staff seeking comfort and peace. The garden was designed as a special outdoor retreat, where the sights, sounds and smells of the flowers, trees and water features can be enjoyed from the meandering path or one of the convenient seating areas. Mary hart Wilheit, who is known for her unique metal artistry, has sculpted several pieces on display throughout the garden, weaving art with nature.

This therapeutic space was made possible through a generous signature gift to The Medical Center Foundation by richard & Lona Pope and their family – given to honor their family’s legacy of continued commitment to volunteerism for the benefit of patients, families and staff at nGMC, and in memory of the late ralph and ocie Pope. The garden is intimately situated in the South Tower off the main lobby of the Women & Children’s Pavilion. The outdoor reprieve is available for expectant parents, siblings and family anxiously awaiting the arrival of a newborn child. in addition, cancer patients receiving chemotherapy in the infusion Center have the terrarium landscape to gaze upon during their often long treatments.

The SAne (Sexual Assault nurse examiner) Program at nGMC is a partnership with rape response, local law enforcement and the district attorney’s office. it began in 1990 to provide a standardized approach to evidence collection in sexual assault cases. Following the program’s introduction in our area, conviction rates of sexual predators have improved significantly. in these types of sensitive cases, the ability to capture microscopic evidence of injuries is of utmost importance. Funding replaced outdated photo equipment with a digital imaging system, improving the clarity and precision of vital forensic evidence. The equipment has also shortened exam and evidence collection time that victims must endure following their assault.

The SimnewB (interactive neonatal patient simulator) is a computerized training doll used by nursing and respiratory therapy staff throughout the niCU, Labor and delivery and Mother/Baby units at nGMC. it allows healthcare professionals to become better educated and able to identify clinical conditions more quickly by participating in mock code drills of various clinical scenarios as they would in real life code situations, providing more realistic training.

The shortage of healthcare professionals continues, making recruitment and retention of qualified

nursing and allied health professionals highly competitive and challenging. To help minimize

the shortage in our area, Healthy Journey helped provide a pathway for students to complete

education programs by funding scholarships that enable nGMC to recruit students in clinical

education programs as well as retain current staff by providing critical continuing education

opportunities.

dana nation was an associate degree rn of Lanier Park hospital for several years before nGMC and Lanier Park merged in 1990. When the two hospitals joined together, dana transferred into the Medical Center’s PACU unit serving as a staff nurse. in december 2010, dana was given an opportunity to become the unit educator for the endoscopy, Periop, PACU, and Short-Stay surgery areas. in december of 2011, dana enrolled in American Sentinel University to obtain her BSn degree in nursing. This degree provided dana tools that would assist her in educating and precepting staff to these specialty units. Because of the Healthy Journey Scholarship, this tenured employee worked full time and completed her online education in five semesters. dana’s degree provided her the opportunity to grow professionally, and provided the orga-nization with an exceptional educator with expanded skills.

Through a generous signature gift to The Medical Center Foundation from Gainesville business owners and residents Bob and Wanda Swoszowski, The swoszowski scholarship Fund has been established to assist non-traditional nursing and allied health students. The Swoszowskis lead by example and are passionate about providing valuable higher education resources and opportunities for all students in the northeast Georgia region pursuing a healthcare career.

Layoffs, underemployment, and the loss of employer benefits have severely limited the financial resources of a large portion of the population. At nGhS, financial assistance is provided for indigent patients to obtain urgently needed discharge medications and transportation. individuals eligible for these funds are patients whose needs cannot be met through primary insurance, their own personal funds, government programs, or other charitable services. indigent patient Funds covered critical costs for over 1,600 patients during healthy Journey. Funds are reserved for patients receiving uncompensated care and presenting clearly demonstrable needs. referrals of eligible patients are made directly by case management staff, those intimately aware of a patient’s medical needs and financial limitations. Patients receiving this interim assistance are also provided with a plan for connecting with long-term assistance programs, as well as contact information of a follow-up provider.

health Access (hA) is a physician-driven program started by the hall County Medical Society that seeks to improve access to medical care for hall County’s low-income, uninsured adults. A volunteer panel of 240 physicians participates. hA focuses on specialty care and helps connect patients who qualify with volunteer physicians in the network who agree to see them. in January 2012, hA merged with Good news Clinics to streamline healthcare services being provided to the community’s underserved. While Good news Clinics provides primary medical and dental services, health Access continues to provide specialty care referral services. Funding from The Medical Center Foundation helped support the continued success of this vital program. in 2013 alone, ha provided 5,783 specialty referral patient visits and served 2,565 patients.

More than five million Americans suffer from heart failure, and our friend Woody Stewart was one of them. This condition results in more hospitalizations than all forms of cancer combined, according to the American heart Failure Society. The services, education and treatment provided in nGMC’s heart Failure Treatment Unit was important to Woody, and donations to this project have been made in this campaign by Woody’s family, close friends and colleagues. This unit will be expanded and completed in 2015 and will be the sole inpatient heart failure treatment unit in the state. The project includes moving the heart failure unit to the same floor as other cardiac/vascular services; increasing bed capacity; adding a modern teaching center with state-of-the-art technology for patient-centered education (named by Lorry and Sherrie Schrage and Sherrie’s mother, Muriel nathan) and conferencing, as well as a demonstration kitchen fully equipped for clinicians and nutritionists to teach diet change classes to patients and family members; and providing a comprehensive heart failure program staffed with trained clinicians and disease managers, overseen by a board certified heart failure medical specialist.

2011 – 2012: expanSion and renovation oF radiation oncology in the last 10 years, the number of radiation patients treated at the Cancer Center of nGMC has increased from 20 – 30 per day to 80 – 90 per day. With the tremendous increase in patient volume came the need for additional space within that department, from waiting room areas to dressing rooms to physician exam areas. Funding from Marketplace helped fund the much needed renovation and expansion for nGMC’s radiation oncology department to accommodate the immense growth and provide a warm and comfortable environment for patients. Significant funds beyond Marketplace proceeds were donated generously by the community to support this important initiative.

hospice helps patients like Ford Ash, a 50-year-old avid runner who was diagnosed with an aggressive, rare form of bone cancer in 2009. By november 2011, the cancer had metastasized to his lungs. his doctor then asked if he could refer him to hospice. Mr. Ash asked many questions, but ultimately was glad his doctor referred him to hospice early enough to get the support he needed. he was able to receive care in the convenience of his home instead of spending valuable time going back and forth to the hospital. he also had a nurse who collaborated regularly with his physician to manage his symptoms. Medical equipment was delivered to his home at no cost, and the hospice team fully supported his choices to continue to live actively while completing his “bucket list.”

Ford and his wife Chris participated in a live video describing his Hospice experience. Mr. Ash passed away peacefully three weeks after the completion of the video. His story will continue to impact many lives through the example of his attitude and his faith. To see the video, go to www.nghs.com/ford-ash.
