TOPICS FOR 2012/2013 Happy to stay the same? Any requests for

changes?? As long as the breadth of study is covered per key stage, for each class (no immediate repetition or voids in their whole school coverage).

KS1 – have a topic per half term, with an increased cross curricular approach to lessons - is this better than having one per term? Is a term too long if the topic is being covered in different lessons?

Volcanoes and Mountains Celts Geology/Islands

4 YEAR ROLLING PROGRAMME

Year 1 – Tudors (2011/12)

Year 2 – Local curriculum (2012/13)

Year 3 – World War II (2013/14)

Year 4 – Victorians (2014/15)

THIS SPRING…

Short half terms (6 & 4 and a half weeks) Awareness of what your class has already covered and where

it is heading Key word being local – what can we do with our class which is

extraordinary? Where can we take them? Who can we get in? What kind of “seaside” day can you get them to experience?

(Remember memory assembly?) Be aware of how the topic fits into your topic overview – Y4

expand on Norfolk Broads from Autumn? Y5 include environmental issue? Y6 paving the way/start the comparison to Derbyshire? Y3 continue work from local study completed in Y2?

Scarning’s Local Curriculum

Page 8: History/Geography 2012/2013

SO, JUST WHAT DID WE BRAINSTORM 2 YEARS AGO??? Reception – Immediate locality. Orienteering the

school (journeys), who works in the school? Mapping the classroom, personal history.

Year 1 – Local people, local area, key aspects of the village (church/village hall/playing field), village life, committees, events, traditions, local businesses. (How much overlap with Y2 last year? Does this cause problems for when they get to Y2?).

Year 2 – School’s role in the community. Dereham’s treasures – what has been important to the town? Why? Maltings, Railway, Town Hall, Cinema, Church, Schools. Compare directly to another market town – Fakenham/Swaffham. Has Dereham always been bigger? Why?

Page 9: History/Geography 2012/2013

KEY STAGE 2 Y3 – Factors influencing placing of the location

of Scarning/Dereham. Earlier history of the location – coach routes, railways, bus routes. School linking?

Y4 – Local successes. Ex-pupil successes, career paths in this county. Ecology of the area – really developing understanding of farming in this area. Sustaining wildlife.

Y5 – Issues that effect the location. Looking at the DAF, EDP, what environmental issues do areas of Norfolk face? Effect of tourism?

Compare and contrast a UK locality to help us understand our own better. What makes Norfolk special? How does the landscape reflect the county’s economy?

Page 10: History/Geography 2012/2013

SUGGESTIONS New teachers - new ideas Combine existing topics leaving a gap for

another topic? Take 2 aspects one per spring half term? If you are taking the class out is there a better

month/half term to be taking them in? What do you really want the children to have

discovered by the end of the spring term? You don’t need to be an expert – there is

nothing wrong with learning with the class. What do you want your outcomes to be? Can you plan in an assessment opportunity? A

presentation to you or another class? A powerpoint on the topic? A written information sheet/brochure/instructions etc etc
