1800’s• Film began in the late 1880s

• It was mainly called motion picture as it was lots of pictures being taken at speed showing motion.

• A British photographer named Eadweard Muybridge was the first person who took a motion picture successfully.

• In this era motion pictures were black and white.

• Thomas Edison then created the first motion picture studio in New Jersey after having created the kinetoscope alongside W.K Dickson.

1900’sThe first Nickelodeon was created.

The first animated cartoon was produced.

Kodak was the main distributor for film equipment.

9000 movie theatres were running in the USA.

Films were only 10-12 minutes long.

Credits emerged within films.

Universal Pictures was created.

Continued…Paramount Pictures was created just 2 years after.

Theatres began showing double features.

Color cinematography was introduced, it appeared first in Becky Sharp.

In 1926 music was first incorporated in film however no dialogue.

In 1927, the first film with spoken words was created. “The Jazz Singer”, by Warner Bros.

A rating system was introduced which was a censorship and allowed only certain ages to see certain films.

Hollywood introduces Cinerama and 3D.
