As I look out on a quickly greening landscape I see the trees in

New Hope come alive again with the buds of spring. Hugh Mar-

shall’s crew, as always, performed an impeccable cleanup just in

time for the 2016 Speaker Series to begin.

The Garden Tour committee is well on their way to completing

their plans for the best tour ever. We also have a very special

Garden Party being planned that you won’t want to miss. Please make your plans

to attend both the Tour and the Party. We would really appreciate you bringing non

-member friends to both events, that we may then entice them into joining our hap-

py family.

This year we again open the mansion for tours on Mother’s Day weekend. Karen

Etcoff has a talented staff of docents in place and is fully prepared to complete the

education part of our mission statement. Once again we offer free tours to the pub-

lic both Saturday and Sunday from 1pm to 5pm. Please stop in to see us.

We do still need additional volunteers to escort visitors on walking tours of New

Hope and guides for the Parry Mansion during weekday hours. I look forward to

hearing from you! Best,

Deborah

his extensive knowledge of antiques.

Save The Bees! Save The Date!

From pesticides, disease and a multitude of prob-lems our most important crop pollinator and honey source is under attack.

Bucks County Beekeepers Association (BCBA) is excited to announce a fun and family-oriented event for National Honey Bee Day in New Hope on August 20. BCBA is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting bee-keeping in the local community through educa-

tion and resource sharing.

On that day in August they will bring together beekeepers, bee associations, as well as other interested locals and visitors to connect with the community to advance beekeeping and honey bees. They are looking for sponsors, crafters, educators and venders to amplify the ecological and economical importance. We encourage all to join this event and get involved.

Located on the beautiful and historic Parry Man-sion grounds, this national event will surely im-press. This one day event is free and open to all. “We look forward to seeing you there,” said Kate Steck President Bucks County Beekeep-ers Association.

HIRSCHFELD, WHISKEY, MULE BARGES & ORAL HISTORY

Annual Speaker Series drew nearly 300 members and guests

The New Hope Historical Society kicked off the 14th annual

“Mondays at the Mansion” speaker series on April 4 at the

Bucks County Playhouse, with a special presentation by Da-

vid Leopold, Creative Director for the Al Hirschfeld Founda-

tion at Lincoln Center, and Director of the Ben Solowey Stu-

dio in Bedminster, Pennsylvania. His book, "The Hirschfeld

Century: Portrait of an Artist and his Age," was named one

of Amazon's Top Books of 2015.

The series continued on April 11 when Herman C. Mihalich

discussed the fascinating 300 year history of Pennsylvania

Rye Whiskey. Herman is the Founder and Distiller of Dad's

Hat Pennsylvania Rye Whiskey, located in Bristol, Pennsyl-

vania.

On April 18, Captain Jürgen (George) Schweickhardt and John Bayma presented “From the Molly-Polly-Chunker to the New

Hope Mule Barge: Over 150 Years of Leisure Activities on the Delaware Canal.” Jürgen was the owner and operator of the

New Hope Mule Barge Company from 1977 to 1997.

The series concluded on April 25 at Trinity Episcopal Church with Robert McEwan, Board Member for Solebury Township

Historical Society for Oral Histories. He focused on the inventory of the oral histories that have been established, and how to

access them and search for specific topics. We co-sponsored it with the Solebury Township Historical Society and the church.

A M e s s a g e f r o m t h e P r e s i d e n t

Never let it be said that the New Hope Historical Society (NHHS) and The Parry Mansion isn’t an active

organization and museum. For instance, in March we celebrated Benjamin Parry’s birthday. In April, the

annual Speaker Series, “Mondays at The Mansion” welcomed close to 300 guests. While we informed,

educated and entertained our guests, we also had the opportunity to interact with other organizations. A

special thank you to the Bucks County Playhouse Theater and staff for welcoming us as we opened the

2016 Series at the Playhouse. We also partnered with The Solebury Township Historical Society in a

joint presentation about the rich oral histories housed within our archives.

May begins the tour season at the Parry Mansion. Our talented docents make visiting the museum a

rewarding and fun experience with each visit. Yes, it’s fun to visit over and over again; I learn something

new on each tour.

May is also the time of year when the Garden Tour Committee, the Board of Directors and an army of

volunteers gear up for NHHS’s primary fundraiser. This year it’s the 23rd Annual Garden Tour. Call the office or go online to pur-

chase your tickets.

Now, we’re into June and of course the Garden Tour, Saturday, June 4 th, kicks off the month. The weekend of June 11th, join the

local “kids” (Brownies, Girl Scouts and more) who will be setting up an “Alex’s Lemonade Stand” on the grounds of the Parry Man-

sion. On June 13th we invite you to dress in your garden party attire as we enjoy ourselves at “The Party in The Garden.” I had a

glimpse at the plans; it’s a party you won’t want to miss!

Sometime in June / July the NHHS docents and members will be partnering with the New Hope-Solebury Library for a “student

activity.” I have a little information about this but I won’t spoil it for you. Look for information in the near future. Speaking of the

NHHS and the NH-S Library, another youth and family oriented activity, July 14th is a day for Families to Tour the Parry Mansion.

We’re still in July. The “Delaware Canal Festival” takes place on the 30th. This will be a multi-organization festival throughout the

town. On the grounds of the NHHS will be a display of Civil War Units. We can expect to see displays and demonstrations of medi-

cal supplies, engineering tools and everyday items used in the New Hope area during that time period. This display will be orga-

nized by the Greater New Hope Chamber of Commerce.

Now it’s August. Remember that the Parry Mansion is still open every weekend for tours and the A/C is on. We have another spe-

cial activity on the grounds - on August 20th the Bucks County Bee Keeper Association will have live demonstrations and exhibi-

tions, for instance, beeswax candle making and teaching us about the health benefits of honey and bee products. I’m hoping for

samples. I’ll bet they’re also going to teach us how to become “bee keepers.”

September is back to school and back to work for the NHHS - like we ever really had a break. The weekend of September 9, 10

and 11th will be the New Hope Historical Society’s Art Show at New Hope Arts. There’s History Day and on September 25 th look for

the return of “Society Suppers.” This is your opportunity to dine in one of the Bucks County homes and perhaps meet new friends.

I told you we were going to be busy! I hope to see you, our members and your guests at “The Mansion!” Carole

THANK YOU TO OUR SPEAKER SERIES SPONSORS AND VOLUNTEERS

Barge; and Robert McEwan from Solebury Township Historical Society.
