Movie Screening of "Sairat" 28 August 2018 was a day worth remembering fo r the students
and faculty of the history department. From moming 10 am onwards aura of room number 23
was filled with enthusiasm and curiosity, there were a 110 students who attended the
screening. The screening ofSairat began shortly after the arrival of teachers. A few students
delivered their speeches about the movie and elaborated on the many aspects of the movie
and its message very decorously. Sairal is the 2016 Marathi movie starring Rinku Rajguru
and Akash Thosar which shows the struggle faced by a couple due to caste and c lass
differences and how this evil practice still prevails in India. This movie by Nagraj Manjule
was applauded by critics and audiences alike due to its rawness, simplicity and the true
depiction of honour killing and caste discrimination that still prevails in soc iety.
The audience was engrossed in the movie in no time. The first part of the movie was very
much in true Bollywood fashion with its slow-motion scenes and songs. This ha lf is very
light hearted wherein the lead couple, Archie (Rinku Rajguru) and Parshya (Akash
Thosar),fall in love. The beauty of young love and the amusing incidents in this half stole
audience's heart. But then the course of movie took a tum and the struggle for love began.
During the interval, refreshments were provided by the Hospitality Team of the department.
The provisions were made very smoothly and efficiently by team of 10-15 vo lunteers. The
second half of the movie was at a stark contrast from the first half. There are no songs in this half and a change can be seen in the behaviour of the female protagonist throughout this half.
The emotions of regret, happiness and dilemma were enacted well by Rinku Rajguru and
Akash Thosar. Their struggle for love and fight for rights till the end of their life left the
audience spellbound and horified. There was a movie discussion on the film by where
students talked about various articles on "caste and gender discrimination such as B.R
Ambedkar's "Annihilation of Caste" and Uma Chakravarti's "Conceptual is ing Brahmanical
Patriarchy in Early India". The main motive of showing this movie to the student was to tell
them the depth of the matters such as honour killing and caste discrimination and how they as
the citizen shou ld not only be aware but also fight against such social evils.

Visual arts like paintings, drawings and sketches along with sculptures have formed an important component of expressing oneself from the ancient times. The third year history honours students from Maitreyi College, University of Delhi, visited the famed National Gallery of Modern Art situated in New Delhi on 20th September 2018, there
were a 55 students who were a part of this trip . Enthusiastic as ever for any field trip, students and teachers alike arrived at 10:30 AM sharp, ready to be mesmerized by the fantastical , abstract and shockingly realistic world of paintings and sculptures. At the very beginning of the tour, the students were assigned with a curator who talked them through the different artists whose works were displayed. Mister Argha Ganguly, also made sure that the students interacted and enquired about the different exhibited works. The gallery boasts of a collection as large as 18000 pieces of paintings and sculptures of which only about 500 were displayed on site. Some pieces are sent to museums, exhibitions and art galleries both domestic and international, while others are put on display for a short period of time. One of the most interesting works were those done by company artists. Miniature
paintings of the Mughal times were simple two-dimensional figures done on sheets of paper. Some famous artists whose works have been displayed in the museum are, Rabindranath Tagore, Gaganendranath and Abanindranath Tagore, Jamini Roy and
Amrita Sher-Gil. Recent art movements led by people like MF Husain are also displayed in the gallery Overall, the students thoroughly enjoyed this excursion. It certainly gave them an interesting introduction to the fascinating world of art history and the tour had definitely helped them gain knowledge on ways to appreciate art more often.

On the morning or 9th October, 2018, the first, second and third year history honours students were taken on a heritage walk to Tughlaqabad Fort and Surajkund. 170 Students went along with the professors.
Under the able guidance of Dr. Sanjay Singh from the Archaeological Survey ofIndia (ASI),the students got the unique opportunity to see the palace area within the
reservoir, the stepwell, the granary, a series of bastions, what is believed to be a watch
tower and of course the tomb, famously known as the Tughlaqabad Fort.
Tughlaqabad Fort is a ruined fort in Delhi, built by Ghiyas-ud-din Tughlaq, the founder of TUghlaq dynasty, of the Delhi Sultanate oflndia in 1321, as he established the third historic city of Delhi. It lends its name to the nearby Tughlaqabad residential commercial area as well as the Tughlakabad Institutional Area.
The fort was a magnificent structure that sang to the harmony ofIslamic and Hindu cultures through its architecture. The students saw the revolutionary use of squinches and true arches.
Moving from there, the students were taken to Surajkund. The grand reservoir though dried up now was reflective of the quality of masonry and organisation. Surajkund, which literally means 'Lake of the Sun is an artificial lake built in the backdrop ofthe Aravalli hills with an amphitheatre shaped embankment constructed in semicircular fonn. It is said to have been built by the King Suraj Pal of Tomar dynasty in the 10th
century. The students came back with memories and an abundance of curiosity to dig deeper into the past of this ancient city.

The wide and fascinating curriculum of the 2nd years landed them in the hub of
creative thinkers. The gallery was full of emotions, colors, perspective, and above all, it was deeply fi lled with history. The gallery is a repository of the cultural ethos of the country and showcases the changing art fonus through the passage of the last hundred and fifty years stalting from about 1857 in the field of Visual and Plastic arts. Notwithstanding some gaps and some trivia, the NGMA collection today is undeniably the most significant collection of modern and contemporary art in the country today.
The guide for the day was Sir Argha Ganguly, the assistant curator of the gallery. His interactive session expanded our horizons of thought from logistics to the abstract
space of feelings, thereby sensitising us to the art, the artist, and the context of his work. The National Gallery of Modern Art helps students to look at the works of modern art with greater joy, understanding and knowledge by extending their relationship with our daily life and experiencing tllem as vital expressions of the human spirit.

The History Department of Maitreyi College began with its Quiz Event in association with Avgaahan 2019. Having recieved entries from various colleges of the University of Delhi and others from across the country and globe, we welcomed the finalists on this day, the 26th of February, 2019. The event was attended by 134 students with great curiosity and enthusiasm.
Nine teams, with two members each, sat down for the first round which aimed at testing their knowledge of Ancient, Mediaeval, Modem and World History through a series of fifteen Multiple Choice Questions that they were required to answer in a mere five minutes Dr. Ranjana Bhattacharya and Dr.Ritu C. Kumar were the judges for this round. As it turned out, two teams had to battle it out in a Tie Breaker Round, for their place as the fifth team. They were required to identify the type of Stone Tool that was presented in the visual. One team succeeded.
We then proceeded with the next rounds which were hosted by our Quiz Masters Rohan Srivastava and Priyanka Nirupam. One team was eliminated with each upcoming round, over the course of three rounds in order to reveal the teams that stood in first, second and third positions. The second round comprised of questions that pertained to visual cues of too ls, art, architecture, monuments and eminent historical personalities. Each question had to be answered within twenty seconds. Towards the end of the round, the audience could be seen chiming in with impatience, on the verge of prompting the exact answer. For the following rounds, thus, a provision was made for the audience to answer questions that the teams failed to, within the stipulated time. Both our Quiz Masters with their impeccable sense of humour, brought another aspect to look forward to.
With the elimination of a team, the third round commenced. It predominantly contained questions on Early Indian History. The first year students of History and BA Program in the audience were particularly interactive during this round due to the relevance of the questions with their syllabus. With the end of this round, another tie breaker was required to determine the fourth team that would be going into the final round.
The fina l round comprised of a mixed pool of questions re lated to authors, reformers, etc.
By the end of th is round, we had our three winning teams who were congratulated by the
Head of our Department, Dr. Ranjana Bhattacharya .
The event was organised very smoothly due to the sincere efforts of the Volunteer and

Since its inception, cinema has always been an integral part of our lives. It possesses
the power to alter the mind set of its audience. To understand how women have been
represented throughout the history of cinema, on 13 March 2019, the Annual Fest of
History Department had an inaugural speech by Dr. Nirmal Kumar, Associate
Professor of History at Sri Venkateswara College.
Post the lighting of the lamp, he presented an insightful lecture on the gendered
discourse: Hindi cinema and construction of manliness and feminity'. To explain the
changes in representation of women in cinema throughout its history, Dr. Nirmal
Kumar started his lecture by giving examples of women representation in si lent films
and subsequently black and white movies with audio. Movies of such early times were
mostly based on mythological themes, reasons to do with the Nationalistic feelings in
audience during the 1940's. Although women in these movies were much less
marginalised as compared to the movies that we see in the upcoming period.
Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, and Raj Kapoor were the topmost bollywood actors in the
1950s. Their stardom made it clear that the movie industry was run by men. Women
just played roles of supporting the male protagonist. In the next two decades actors
like Amitabh Bachchan were playing the fan favourite roles of manliness in Hindi
cinema. This was also the time when we saw that actresses who played the role of a
mother, daughter or a sister were completely desexualized. This further marginalized
the role of a woman in a Hindi movie. The female characters in these movies lacked
character arcs. They were merely a supporting agent for the male character.
We may think that with the progressive mindset of the society in the last couple of
decades, women may be represented in a much more progressive manner. Although
that is not completely true. Till this day the majority of camera work is handled by
men. Hence, it is important to note that the movies that we watch are primari ly male
gaze. These are interesting times in the history of Indian cinema, particularly because
the established aesthetic conventions and modes of production of the Hindi fi lm
industry are being challenged, as are the boundaries between what is alternative and
what is mainstream.
The lecture was foJlowed by an interactive session where Dr. Ninnal Kumar cleared
the queries of all the students. He taught us to critically analyse these movies that have
become an integral part of our popular culture, and to realise how the female
characters were always given secondary roles. 170 students were part of the lecture.

Priyanka Nirupam, Assistant Professor of History, Maitreyi College and recipient of National Nritya Shiromani Award in Kuchipudi, presented a Lecture Demonstration
on 13th March, 2019 as part of lstoria'19, the Annual Festival of the Department of History, Maitreyi College. According to Priyanka Nirupam, within the ambit of the Early Medieval times, Indian Literature, Art and Architecture and the Performing Arts acted as significant mediums of propagation of ideals of the Yaishnava Cult. It also implied an assimilation of a multitude of traditions. Her lecture brought in a fresh perspective and looked into a few of such sources that highlighted many aspects of the growth of the Avatara Cult. Moreover, mythologies undeniably played an important role in binding together and integrating Yaishnava ideology. Art and Architecture along with the performing traditions, worked simultaneously by visually depicting its presence to its targeted audience. Followed by this informative lecture , Priyanka N irupam also performed a Kuchipudi piece that narrated the episode of Yam ana Avatara. Hence, Priyanka Nirupam through
her demonstration, provided the audience with an opportunity to experience history through the visual art. 163 students were part of this beautiful lecture.
