A History of the B3 Trikes

1966/7. Rugeley, Staffs. First conceived as road usable version of Racing Morgan BUS 83, but only a few basic sketches and specs.

1973/4. Started building 1200cc Straight 8 engine with 2 coupled Reliant Regal 600cc engines, (similar to early Bugatti), but with power o/p in the centre by chain to motor cycle clutch, and with the gearbox alongside the rear of the engine. Abandoned due to moving house / garage.

1975. Caerleon, Gwent. BUS 83 sold. First serious drgs - Body & Chassis outlines.

1976/9. Courtney St, Newport. Built Boat Tailed F4 Morgan special AOE 458. Replacement Morgan gearbox with Morris 1000 gear cluster designed, made and installed in F4.

Feb 1980. Serious design work, with assistance from Dave Hodgson, and Tony Smith, of B3 front suspension, chassis, engine, gearbox and final drive. Patterns for chassis and torque tube lugs made, castings obtained, and machined.

1981/2. Rolling chassis made, with Anglia 105E engine /gearbox, Lotus Plus 2 hubs and wheels. First body mock up made with cardboard & masking tape over welding rod formers. Shape good enough to proceed to wooden formers and hardboard skin. Outlines OK, but shape too ‘hard’. Body sections modified several times.

Laurie Weeks sees bodywork ‘plug’ on Rolling Chassis and says, “Must have one”, but initially told no!

Jan/March 1983. Chassis modified for Escort gearbox, and finished ready for GRP bodywork. Wing mould made. (First ever GRP by RJB). More conversations with Laurie Weeks, agreed to build one replica.

April / May: G.R.P. moulds for bonnet & body made by RJB, Tony Smith and Steve Absolon

Agreement with Laurie Weeks for his Light Car & Cyclecar Restoration Co. to build B3’s under licence. Design for pre production prototype with more ground clearance and fewer specially made parts started.

Oct / Feb 84: First full assembly, braking system, wiring harness, & cooling system made and fitted.

March 1984: First trial runs at Black Clawson International carpark. 105E engine, 14” x 4½” MG B wheels, Cross ply tyres all round. No upholstery, nothing at all painted. Very satisfactory first test, all those present, (RJB, Tony Smith, Steve Griffiths, Steve Absolon, and Mark Smith) tried car, with only two problems, the front springs were too soft, and the key sheared in the bevel box O/P shaft.Set of chassis pressings & castings for D. Hodgson – B3 8402

April / September: New uprated springs were ordered, and a new bevel box output shaft made from EN24t with double keys. The Trike was then taken completely apart, and finished - i.e. shot blasted, etch primer, polyester undercoat, and ICI 2K FIAT Maroon topcoat on painted parts, and Chrome plating of all front suspension pieces. New 15” x 4 ” 48 spoke front wheels with 145 SR15 Firestone tyres, a 145 SR14 Firestone rear tyre, the Light Battleship Grey leather upholstery, and the tuned 1300cc Cortina Mk2 Pre Crossflow engine were fitted.

November: B3 8301-registered AYX 428, passed M. 0. T. and taxed, then used as much as possible to ‘run in’, when weather permitted.

1st Jan 1985: 8301 taken to VSCC Verzons pub meeting, despite 3500 rev limit, (still running in), ‘looses’ Lotus Cortina support car through the lanes, but broke chain at half link. Trike taken from Verzons to L.C. &C.R. Co. workshops by L. Weeks, ready for road test by KIT CAR Magazine.

March: 8301 taken to VMCC Mallory Park test day with Dave Hodgson driving. After adjusting tyre pressures, very competitive times, D. H. well pleased, and no chain problems. Decide to enter VOC Cadwell Park meeting.

April: First Road Test of 8301 in ‘KIT CAR’ magazine, very complimentary… ‘Possesses both the speed and handling to out perform some very sophisticated competition’. Lots of enquiries, one of which eventually became an order (Bob Raikes in 1992!). 8301 now fully run in, and breaking the final

Arrive at show with 8301 on new, hydraulic raised / lowered trailer, behind Steve Griffith’s Dodge Pick Up (more interest from ‘KIT CAR’ magazine) stand at show attracted lots of interest, resulting in an order years later (Harry Sales in 1987).

May: Back to back road tests of 8301 and Triking in ‘KIT CARS & SPECIALS’, B3...’more usable’. Road test and report on VMCC Mallory Park test day in ‘The CLASSIC MOTOR CYCLE’, both very positive… ‘All the panache you would expect from a sports motorcycle’. Colour picture on whole rear cover. 8301 exhibited at ‘Classic & Sportscar show at N. E. C. with more interest.

8301 driven from Newport to Cadwell in 3½ hours for Dave Hodgson to race in Vincent Owners Club Cadwell Park race meeting. August: New Rear Suspension and Transmission designed to resolve the half link and other problems on 8301. A 2.5” dia. single trailing arm, pivoted on needle roller bearings, with rising rate adjustable length pull rod linkage onto an inboard adjustable spring / damper unit, and a new Bevel Box housing, Crown Wheel Carrier, & Rear Brake Drum were designed, and patterns made. The chain drive was changed to 33t Morgan sprocket on the Bevel Box, and a 39t specially made sprocket on the new 7” x 1” Brake drum, fitted to a Morgan 4/4 front hub. The fabricated sheet steel torque tube was changed to 2 pieces, to access the prop shaft, which was of the Metalastic type to absorb shock loads.

September: 8604 started for L. Weeks, using as many parts as possible from 8503, i.e. front suspension, hubs, stub axles, king posts, steering rack, body shell & bonnet.

October: after much correspondence with DVLA, 8301 was re registered BSV 526. Road Test ‘SPORTS CAR Monthly’ very enthusiastic. ... ‘No doubting the sheer unadulterated fun that it provides’

The Buckland has continued to be competitive to the present day of the 12 trikes manufactured all are still running.

In 2010 Penguin Speed Shop entered into talks with Dick Buckland with a view to reviving the Buckland B3. These talks resulted in PSS acquiring the rights to the trike in November 2010.

PSS has been busily launching the B3 with updated components in their development workshop in north wales and expect to start delivery of the initial 20 trikes in the summer of 2011.

These initial 20 units will be built as closely as possible to the original 12 units with respect paid to updated technologies in the form of braking and suspension. To allow the trike to be registered changes may have to be made to the frontal areas of bodywork to meet current legislation.
