Galle

• Galle is situated around 120kms south from Colombo, which is also the administrative capital of southern province.

• This ancient city has some of the most important historical sites in the country, including the Old Dutch Fort built in the 18th Century, Dutch reformed church, Galle light house and many more.

• This popular landmark is located within the Galle fort premises.

• The clock tower was constructed in 1883, paid for through public subscriptions by the people in Galle in recognition of Dr. P.D. Anthonisz, a renowned Burgher doctor who served as the Colonial Surgeon at that time.

• Clock tower is roughly 4 storey's in height which emphasizes the colonial architecture.

Mansion Museum

• This historical museum is privately owned and situated inside the Galle Fort.

• It houses some of the important artifacts ranging from tea cups and kettles with printed head of Queen Elizabeth 2, Chinese porcelain with VOC symbol, ancient coins and jewellery.

• Entrance is free for anyone visiting.

Dutch Reformed Church

• Situated in the Galle Fort, this Church was built by the Dutch back in 1755 AD.

• It is also one of the oldest Protestant Churches still in use in Sri Lanka.

• You can explore the Doric style architecture with its high ceiling, double scroll molding, large timber doors and stained glass windows.

National Maritime Museum• This historical building is located near the old gate of Galle fort.

• The museum was damaged in 2004 from Tsunami, however restored and reopened in 2010 with the help of Netherland.

• Museum is housed with a variety of artifacts including relics from maritime archeological sites around Galle, naval craft, artillery, sailor shoes, etc.

National Museum of Galle

• It is housed in a 1656 colonnaded Dutch building in the Galle Fort.

• Its 3 galleries house exhibits from Portuguese, Dutch and British eras including jewellery, mask carvings, furniture, weaponry some Chinese artifacts denoting the long friendship between the countries.

Galle Lighthouse

• Dated back to 1848 and built by the British, this is the oldest light house in the country.

• A fire destroyed the older building, however restored back in 1939.

• It is situated inside the Galle fort on its south wing facing the Galle harbor.
