In all of this frenzy of spending and reform, we have never even looked at a very critical area of

our profession:

Educational Reform

How are we delivering direct instruction to our

students???

How are we engaging our students in the direct instruction

we provide???

Research shows that kids learn more when they

WATCH what we are presenting!!!!

Who would’ve thought….????

Hidalgo TechnologyBasic philosophy:

Provide a maximum amount

of direct instruction, using the most current tools-Improve teacher efficiency and

increase teacher

productivity-

Each teacher uses a laptop hooked to a TV

or video projector

Teachers create materials on

their computers and share the files with each

other

The Future??Shared Lesson Creation would standardize the curriculum, leading to teacher collaboration on improving instruction-

It would be similar to the concept of “open-source” computer code, where users are free to modify, improve, and share the improvements with the entire community-

The Short Answer:

Technology Integration

What Should It Look Like?

Start with the classroom teacher!

And get rid of this

blackboard!!!

Page 15: Historical Perspective The Short Answer Equipping or Empowering? Do’s and Don’ts Q & A, Evaluation, Whatever The Fantastic Four Technology Integration.

To Equip is Not To Empower!Smart

Boards!!!!!Yeah! We got technology!!!

Lots of schools are buying them!

Very few have a plan for properly training teachers

to use them.

Page 16: Historical Perspective The Short Answer Equipping or Empowering? Do’s and Don’ts Q & A, Evaluation, Whatever The Fantastic Four Technology Integration.

Smart BoardsThey have some nice features.

Drawbacks:

You have to turn your back on your

class.Can waste time.

Need the projector and laptop anyway.

Analysis:

Software is not core.

Essential Equipment:Essential Equipment:Laptop and projection device:Laptop and projection device:

TV’s work very well!TV’s work very well!

..to be used for ..to be used for direct instructiondirect instruction!!

..NOT FOR GRADING!..NOT FOR GRADING!For exaFor example:

Page 18: Historical Perspective The Short Answer Equipping or Empowering? Do’s and Don’ts Q & A, Evaluation, Whatever The Fantastic Four Technology Integration.

The Fantastic FourIf your teachers learn these four skills, they will quickly be able to

enhance their instruction.1. Create and manipulate text boxes.

2. Create and manipulate graphic objects.

3. Utilize custom animation.4. Insert pictures, movies, and

sounds.Examples:

Page 19: Historical Perspective The Short Answer Equipping or Empowering? Do’s and Don’ts Q & A, Evaluation, Whatever The Fantastic Four Technology Integration.

Do’s / Don’tsDon’t…..

1. ...introduce Smart Boards before you train in using the computer for direct instruction.

2. ….have a witch doctor in charge of your tech program.

3. …think Accelerated Reader means you have good technology integration.

4. …utilize “ready, FIRE! aim”technique when buying tech items.

5. …allow kids to “know more than we do about technology”. They may learn to teach reading

or be an administrator.6. ...don’t allow PowerPoints to be pulled off

the web. They may not be standards-based or well designed.

7. ….go single platform…..but don’t stress over it if you have to.

8. …don’t teach kids to do things teachers haven’t learned to do.

Page 20: Historical Perspective The Short Answer Equipping or Empowering? Do’s and Don’ts Q & A, Evaluation, Whatever The Fantastic Four Technology Integration.

Do’s / Don’tsDo….

1. …emphasize tech-enhanced direct instruction.2. …have a plan for integrating technology!!

3. …train, train, train. It will happen, but not by accident.

4. …fund a Tech Person. Yes, you can afford it!5. …emphasize tech collaboration.

6. …require computer lab and classroom computers to be planned for like any other resource.

7. …make the computer lab should be an extension of the classroom.

8. …have TEACHERS provide the instruction in the lab. It is not a prep period.

9. …encourage first implementers by giving them extra stuff.

10. …have a“Geek of the Week” award as motivator.
