Tuscany Lucca HISTORIC VILLA IN LUCCA

DESCRIPTION Historic villa in Lucca dating back to the XV century and located close to the city centre with easy access to major transport hubs. In 1785, the house was renovated and in the following centuries it was further modified whilst respecting the original structure. It still preserves its facade that is a classical example of the architectural style of Lucca in the XVII and XVIII centuries. One hectare of land surrounds the villa, partly enclosed by a high wall. The large garden is particularly noteworthy, full of big camellias famous in Italy, amongst other vegetation which gives additional value to the property.

The layout of the interiors is made according to a geometric concept where the rooms are arranged around a central living room. The interiors are decorated with precious frescoes and antique furniture and decorative objects that remind us of ancient times. The ground floor hosts an entrance that leads to a study, a kitchen and a living room connected to a multipurpose room and a hallway. This in turn leads to a bathroom, a cellar and a large grey stone staircase leading to the upper floor. It also houses a central living room around which three bedrooms and a kitchen are located; another bedroom and a bathroom can be reached directly from the hallway. It is thought that Capannori was already populated when the Lombards descended into Italy but its written history begins in the year 745, when a monk settled in the area and founded a chapel there called the "little house" from which the name of the town is derived. It was dedicated to San Quirico.

From the outset, the village of Capannori was dominated by the city of Lucca, and developed over the next centuries into a thriving rural centre. Between the XIII and XIV centuries, the city of Lucca began the fortification of the village in preparation for the advancing Republic of Pisa, with which it was locked in an ongoing power struggle.

The city was invaded by troops from Pisa causing widespread damage, although a few years later the city was liberated from this tyranny thanks to Castruccio Castracani, who was subsequently elected Duke of Lucca, Pisa, Pistoia, Luni and Volterra. A certain political stability was thus restored allowing the community to soon become one of the most important rural centres of the region. From Pisa it quickly passed to the French, and at the end of the French occupation the city of Lucca and all its possessions including Capannori, came to be part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany governed by Leopold II of Lorraine. It remained as such until being annexed to the Kingdom of Italy n 1861 brought about by King Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoy.
