GREETINGS FROM THE GOVERNOR! Welcome to the Governor’s monthly Newsletter. April is when Paul
Harris, Founder of Rotary International was born. It is also the
40th Anniversary of the Earth Day. In 1957 we started to hold Ro-

Group Study Exchange Team Selected. By Sharon Flynn, Chair, Outgoing GSE Team, District
7490 to District 4835, Year 2010
The Group Study Exchange Team that will travel from Dis-
trict 7490 in New Jersey to District 4835 in Argentina has
been selected and is busy preparing for their trip. The ex-
change visit will begin on April 17 and end on May 16. This
year Rotary International expanded District 4835 from half
of the province of Santa Fe to include four complete provinc-
es - Santa Fe, Jujuy, Santiago del Estero and Tucumán. The
borders of the new Rotary District encompass about 994
miles in length – more than the distance between Boston
and Atlanta. The team should experience the diversity of
Argentine culture; from the sophisticated modern culture of
Santa Fe to the Inca ruins and high Andes of Jujuy. The GSE program focuses on vocational exchanges, giving
team members an opportunity to observe how their profes-
sions and businesses are practiced in other countries. The
hospitality of Rotary families and the cultural experiences
are pleasant adjuncts to the vocational education they will
receive. Each team’s experience is different: depending upon
the country visited and the vocational make-up of the team. Our District 7490 team this year will be lead by Elizabeth
Gavino, Principal of Lewin & Gavino, a financial consulting
firm, and a member of the Hoboken Rotary Club. Team
members include Christine Giordano, a Caseworker with
the New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services
(DYFS); Julie Yannalfo, Director of Programs & Communi-
cations with The Penn Club of New York; and Joanne Kor-
nelli, a freelance journalist. Currently the team is intensely preparing their Power Point
presentation to the Rotary clubs they will visit, learning
conversational Spanish, becoming familiar with Argentine
culture and customs, preparing publicity handouts and a
myriad of other tasks prior to their departure. The team and committee were hampered this year by fits
and starts occasioned by job issues of some of the original
team members. Bonnie Sirower was very helpful in our ef-
forts to find replacements by sending out emergency e-mail
messages to the entire District 7490 list of members. That
effort enabled the committee to select new team members
who are fully qualified for this exchange visit. Let’s hope the
global economic situation will improve so that the next team
will not experience job issues which sabotage their GSE
plans. It is a big disappointment all the way around to be
excited about the GSE experience only to have it fall
through. Let’s all wish our current team a wonderful experience in
Argentina. When they return, clubs should invite them, sin-
gly or as a team, to speak at their meeting about the trip.

Haiti Relief Funds to be Disbursed. By DG Raj Bhatia
The Disbursement Committee met on March 31 and dis-
cussed the four proposals that were sent to them by the Ac-
tion Committee. They also had an opportunity to meet with
Rotarian Tom Wells from the Wells Mountain Foundation
and Rotarians Christ Stout and Bill Commer from the
Ridgewood AM club representing the ESPWA Home. On the short range and providing immediate help the com-
mittee has recommended the following: A sum of $10,000 to be sent to the District Chair Florence
Marchi for 10 Shelter Boxes to be delivered to Haiti, espe-
cially in the Les Cayes area. Two checks totaling $15,000 – one for $7,500 to be sent to
Dr. Butler of CRUDEM and the second $7,500 to be sent
through the Rotary Club of Les Cayes, for food and other
items as requested by Rotarian Peter Kikot in his proposal.
These funds will be managed by Peter Kikot and all expend-
itures will be accounted for to the Chair of the Haiti Disas-
ter Relief Fund, Assistant Governor Ray Falcon. On a slightly long range and of permanent nature the
Committee recommended $15,000 each for the construction
of an extension of a third unit in a four unit complex by
ESPWA and for the purchase of containers that are being
shipped full of clothes and construction material to Haiti by
the Wells Mountain Foundation. Once empty these contain-
ers will be retrofitted into permanent homes and other units
as required by the people of Haiti. The cost of the ESPWA
project for the construction of one unit is $34,000 and the
committee at this time has recommended only partial
amount of $15,000. ESPWA will request additional funds
from the many other Rotary Clubs that support this effort
and also I have indicated that additional $5000 to added to
this effort once more funds are received by the District. I thank all the committee members who have spent time
and effort and ensured that all funds collected from our Dis-
trict have been put to good use for the people of Haiti. I am
especially thankful to all the recipient of our funds also as
they are dedicating their time and energies in going back
and forth to Haiti and actually executing our and their
wishes in helping the people of Haiti. I thank you all for contributing to the Haiti Disaster Relief
Fund and look forward to your continued support. I do hope
that we can collect the additional funds ($5,000) that I
would like to give to ESPWA as indicated above.
