Notes From Music & Liturgy

Sing to the Lord Our Parish Choir is always open to new members. This group rehearses on Tuesday evenings from 7:30pm to 9:30pm, and leads the music at the

9:30am liturgy on Sunday mornings. The Parish Choir is also the primary group that provides music for liturgies on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve/Day, Holy Week and Easter Triduum, and also for celebrations such as First Communion, Confirmation, and Graduation. This group sings a wide variety of styles of music, from chant and chorale anthems, and also more-recent musical compositions for the church. From a musical perspective, there is ‘something for everyone’. A ‘solo’ voice is not required – just a commitment to attend most rehearsals and liturgies, and a love of singing. If you enjoy singing and can make a fairly-regular commitment to rehearsals and Sunday liturgies, please consider joining this group. For further information, please contact Jim Susic, Director of Music, at 630-353-4529 or [email protected].

Media Ministry Volunteers Needed We are still in need of a few more volunteers for our Media Ministry. These volunteers would help with the use of technology (primarily the laptop and screen) during our liturgical celebrations.

We currently use the laptop for the image of the day, plus also for selected lyrics during the Mass. We are looking for volunteers to assist with running the PowerPoint Slide Show which displays the ap-propriate images and lyrics during the weekend Masses. It is VERY EASY to use: prior experience with computers is helpful, but NOT required. The primary requirement for volunteers would be to arrive at least 15 minutes before the assigned litur-gy. The instructions are scripted, so it is simply a matter of following the script to display the appro-priate images/lyrics. We’d like to get a group of volunteers for each Mass, so that the responsibility does not fall too heavily upon just a few individuals. We are in need of additional volunteers for ALL Masses. Please consider volunteering for this ministry. For additional information or to volunteer, please con-tact Jim Susic at [email protected].

Presentation of the Lord

Forty days after the celebration of Christmas, this feast tells of how Mary and Joseph brought the child to the Temple. There, the aged Simeon took the child in his arms and proclaimed that Jesus would be ‘a light to the Gentiles, the glory of Israel’. These

words have been sung for centuries as Christians have blessed and carried lighted candles in procession. Traditionally, this is also the day when all candles that will be used in the upcoming year are blessed. We will celebrate this day with a special Solemn Liturgy at 8:15am on Saturday, February 2. Music for this liturgy will be led by the Schola. In addition, you are invited to bring a candle to be blessed, and then used in your home, where it can be used for family prayer and other special occasions.

DID YOU KNOW...

... that donating appreciated securities or an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) can be a tax-efficient way to give to St. Joan of Arc? If you donate publicly traded stock or mutual fund shares that have increased

in value and that have been held for more than one year, you may receive greater tax benefits than through cash donations. Your charitable income tax deduction is based on the fair market value of the stock, and you can avoid paying most or all of the capital gains on the appreciated property. When transferring stocks or securities to SJA, it is always important to have a conversation with your financial advisor. Tax law also provides that Americans over the age of 70 can transfer tax-fee up to $100,000 from an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to one or more charitable institutions, such as St. Joan of Arc. This could be a benefit for individuals who are required to take minimum distributions from their IRAs, because distributions may otherwise be included in their gross income for tax purposes. Please contact your IRA Plan Administrator to make the distribution. The distribution must be made directly to St. Joan of Arc for it to be treated as a charitable gift. To obtain forms and directions for these charitable gift options, contact Susan Fronek, SJA Finance Director at [email protected] or (630) 353-4523.
