Digital HI & PC Interface

Successful digital hearing instrument electroacoustic parameter settings require a connection system among the digital hearing instrument, the programming interface, and the computer.

The possibility to allow the dispensing professional to switch rapidly among various parameters, allows the wearer to judge which setting might provide better opportunities to hear speech in noise or in quiet surroundings.

The stored data in the hearing instrument will not be lost, even if the user must replace its battery.

The dispensing professional can access the data stored inside the hearing instrument by coupling the HI to a computer through an interface—most often HI-Pro.

Other interface options may be:

1. Noahlink ( a wireless/Bluetooth)

2. Manufacturer specific (cards, etc)

Once connected, the dispensing professional can adjust a variety of algorithms contained within the hearing instrument.

Each hearing instrument manufacturer has their proprietary software which may be accessed to make changes within the algorithms of their respective hearing instruments.

In 1993, the Hearing Instrument Manufacturer Software Association was formed (HIMSA).

Most of today’s manufacturers design their HI programming software to meet HIMSA standards.

In fact, much of today’s “diagnostic”

software is HIMSA certified to work well with computers.

Digital hearing instruments provide adjustment flexibility for a variety of electroacoustic settings.

These changes must be based upon the test information received during the patient’s audiometric examination.

Software structure for most manufacturer software include:

Patient/client profile information

Audiogram & real ear measurement data

Calculations of various fitting formulae

Fitting & fine tuning hearing instrument

Outcome and verification measurements

Several patient/client benefits have occurred as a result of the HI “digital paradigm”.

Less distortion and more clear sounds

Better sound pressure limiting systems

Multiple listening programs

More reliable/less repair
