OUR HISTORYThe Hippodrome Theatre’s opening night was February 7, 1914. The grand opening featured a live seal

show, a fi ve-piece orchestra and a magician. The Hippodrome hosted vaudeville acts, movies, local talent

shows and events and quickly became a landmark of Downtown. A projection booth fi re in 1928 destroyed

much of the front of the original building, leading to a major renovation to the Spanish Colonial style that

remains today. After a change in management, the Hippodrome was renamed the Waco Theatre and

continued showing fi lms and performances until it hit hard times in 1974 and closed its doors.

The Waco Theatre remained unused until 1980 when the Junior League of Waco began the process of

renovation. Between 1981 and 1986, community volunteers, the Junior League of Waco and the

Cooper Foundation contributed $2.4 million dollars toward its restoration. The Waco Hippodrome Theatre

reopened on February 28, 1987 and became listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

The Waco Performing Arts Company brought a variety of live theatre performances in the building until

2009-2010 when the Hippodrome once again closed its doors.

In December 2012, the Turner Family purchased the Hippodrome and began a major renovation.

The theatre retained its classic look, but added a second movie screen, restaurant, bar and lounge.

The new Hippodrome opened in 2014 and offered fi rst-release and classic fi lms, live theatre, concerts,

stand-up comedy and more. In 2018 another major addition to the Hippodrome was completed

with three state-of-the-art luxury movie theatres, The Raleigh diner with a pet friendly patio,

The Hightop rooftop bar, and additional event space.

The Hippodrome is now set to entertain Waco for another century!
