By the end of 2011, there were 358 Confu- cius Instutes world- wide. CIUA is very proud to be one of a small number of Confucius Instutes situated in a top-ranked US research university, an extremely supporve community and in stunning natural surroundings. Ruan Performance The ruan is a Chinese plucked string instrument with a freed neck, a circular body, and four strings. The Ruan family of instruments is like the violin family, containing four sizes in range: Picc-Ruan, Ruan, Baritone, Ruan and Bass Ruan. Level 1: September 4 - December 4, 2014 (Thurs., 12 p.m. -1 p.m.) Fee: $ 60 Level 2: September 5 - December 5, 2014 (Fri., 5 p.m. - 6 p.m.) Fee: $ 60 Guzheng Performance Guzheng is a Chinese musical instrument with a 2000 year history. It is a plucked zither with 21 strings and movable bridges. CIUA will provide instruments used during the class. Stu- dents may decide to buy or rent the instrument aſter six weeks of study. With an emphasis on easy-to-learn Chinese, each class includes the following secons: sing together; lyrics; vocabulary; grammar notes; background on the songwriters; the music score; lyrics, vocabu- lary, grammar and related informaon. Level 1: September 4 - December 4, 2014 (Thurs., 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.) Fee: $60 Chinese Maral Arts Students will learn hand-by-hand the tradional maral arts, including basic Kung Fu train- ing, Shaolin Fist and Shaolin weapons. Master Junming Zhao is a vising scholar from the Songshan Shaolin Vocaonal Instute of China and the winner of numerous internaonal maral arts and Tai Chi compeons. August 30 - December 6, 2014 (Sat., 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.) Fee: $70 Chinese Tai-Chi You will learn, hand-by-hand, the original Chen Style Tai Chi Chuan, Yang’s Style, Basic Taiji training and Qigong. Chinese traditional medicine and wellness For thousands of years, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) – especially acupuncture, massage
and China’s unique wellness culture -- has played a central role in protecting people’s health.
Although these treatments are sometimes regarded with suspicion they have no ill effects on
the human body and, in fact, increasing numbers of people around the world receive and
study them on a regular basis. After completing the course, students will gain theoretical
knowledge of TCM and wellness culture, as well as have the ability to perform simple massage

Chinese For Business This valuable course is specifically designed for people who would like to learn aspects of the
Chinese language essential and necessary for conducting business with and in China. Language
comprehension and an introduction to culturally applicable business strategies will be includ-

needs as well as gain insights and working knowledge of competitors.

Chinese For Tourists Specifically designed for those who want to learn language essential for travel in China, this
course will provide an introduction to Chinese with an emphasis on traditional culture. Topics
include an overview of many scenic and historical sites, discussion of traditional Chinese arts,
and other topics to make your travel more enriching and enjoyable.

HSK Test Prep HSK Test is an international standardized text of Chinese proficiency approved by the Chinese
government. The Confucius Institute at the University of Arizona serves as the first Internet-
based Chinese Test Center in Arizona. The Center offers Chinese proficiency Test/Hanyu
Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) twice a year.

Calligraphy Chinese Calligraphy isn't simply just about writing. It's about the writer's feelings when placing those characters on a piece of paper.
