Welcome to the inaugural Financial Services Council and Workplace Savings NZ National Conference. The national conference is the event of the year for the financial services and retirement savings industry. Our full two-day programme aims to inspire and ignite great leadership, challenge the industry’s thinking and build the resilience, motivation and knowledge we need to navigate change within the industry. We would also like to highlight the following benefits of our conference:

The national conference is like no other – you’re sure to be challenged, informed and inspired throughout the two days. Welcome to the landmark, inaugural FSC / WSNZ national conference.

We look forward to a great couple of days with you at our conference.

WELCOME

It provides a great platform to communicate with industry leaders and keep up to date with what is happening in the industry, government and the world around us. There’s a great community vibe at the conference. You’ll be surprised by what ideas and strategies others are willing to share with you! The format includes thought-provoking keynote sessions and topic-specific parallel sessions (such as workshops and masterclasses), along with less formal networking events. It aims to challenge the status quo, explore emerging trends and also look outside the industry for fresh inspiration.

THURSDAY 7 SEPTEMBER – MAIN PLATFORM9.30 – 10.15AMHON. STEVEN JOYCE, MINISTER OF FINANCEAND MINISTER FOR INFRASTRUCTURE

After completing a zoology degree at Massey University, Steven started his first radio station, Energy FM, in his home town of New Plymouth at age 21. Along with two business partners, he built up RadioWorks over 17 years until, as a listed public company, it consisted of 22 local radio stations and four national radio networks with 650 staff in 20 branches around New Zealand. Along the way, he developed nationwide music brands, The Edge and The Rock.

In 2000, RadioWorks was purchased by Canadian company Canwest. Steven then entered politics, chairing the National Party’s three-person campaign review after the 2002 election, and a full re-organisation of the party in April 2003. He then took on the role as the party’s first General Manager, and managed its 2005 election campaign.

Steven chaired the National Party’s successful 2008 national election campaign and was elected as a list MP. He was appointed directly to Cabinet as Minister of Transport, Minister of ICT and Associate Minister of Finance. Major projects in his first term included setting up the Roads of National Significance, the ultra-fast and rural broadband projects, and making a series of road safety changes including lifting the driving age and setting up a nil alcohol limit for people under 20.

In early 2010, Steven was also appointed Minister of Tertiary Education. After chairing the 2011 election campaign for National, Steven was given the Economic Development, Science and Innovation, Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment portfolios while retaining Associate Finance. In 2013 he took on responsibility for Novopay, and after chairing his fourth election campaign, was also made Minister of Regulatory Reform.

In his various roles, Steven has introduced performance requirements in the tertiary sector, reformed the apprenticeship and industry training system, and developed Education New Zealand to promote international education. He has overseen the creation of Callaghan Innovation, developed the National Science Challenges, and implemented the Māori and Pasifika Trades Training initiative. He leads the government’s Business Growth Agenda.

After completing a zoology degree at Massey University, Steven

Award winning social entrepreneur Lisa King is on a mission to ensure no children go to school hungry. Lisa is the founder of Eat My Lunch, a social enterprise business launched in 2015 with the belief that clever business solutions can solve big social issues. For every lunch you buy, Eat My lunch gives a lunch to a Kiwi kid in need.

Lisa demonstrates a unique combination of generous spirit and exceptional business acumen. After 15 years working in large FMCGs, marketing some of the country’s biggest food brands, Lisa decided to put her corporate experience towards doing something that would make a positive impact in the community. As a mother of young children, she couldn’t fathom that in a country like New Zealand, 28% of children live in poverty and thousands go to school every day without lunch.

From day one Eat My Lunch established that a simple yet powerful idea could empower consumers by giving them a choice every day with something they already do. Buy Eat My Lunch, ‘join the movement’ and have an immediate, tangible impact in our own ‘back-yard’ or ignore one of biggest social issues facing NZ. In the first two years, Eat My Lunch made 900,000 lunches, with 450,000 given to kids in 48 low-decile schools in Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington.

Eat My Lunch has been the recipient of numerous awards including three Westpac Auckland Business Awards in 2016, Deloittes Fast 50 Rising Star – One to Watch, TVNZ Marketing Awards 2016, NZ Innovation Awards 2015, and Lisa was awarded the 2016 Women of Influence Award in Business Enterprise.

Lisa will share her experiences on building a successful social enterprise, entrepreneurship, and being a woman in business.

Labour’s MP for Wellington Central and Labour’s Finance Spokesperson, Grant was born in 1971 in Palmerston North and lived in Hastings before his family settled in Dunedin. The Presbyterian values his parents taught their three sons fostered Grant’s belief in social justice. He spent his teenage years cultivating his love of rugby and cricket.

After leaving university, Grant joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He managed the New Zealand Overseas Aid Programme to Samoa – a $7.7 million fund with projects in areas such as education, healthcare, public sector capacity building, small business development and the empowerment of women. He was also posted to the United Nations in New York, working on environment and development issues. On his return to New Zealand, he became an advisor for then Minister of the Environment, Marian Hobbs. From there he went on to work in the office of former Prime Minister Helen Clark.

In 2006 Grant began work as the research business manager for the University of Otago at the Wellington School of Medicine. He stood for Wellington Central in 2008 when Marian Hobbs retired, winning the electorate with a majority of 1900 votes. In the 2011 election he grew that majority to 6,400, and in 2014 to 8,267.

Grant was elected Deputy Leader by the Labour caucus after the 2011 election, serving in that role until September 2013. Grant became the Finance spokesperson in November 2014, and has previously held spokesperson roles for Labour in Employment, Skills & Training, Economic Development, Tertiary Education, State Services, Health, and Arts, Culture and Heritage. He is also a member of parliament’s Privileges Committee.

Grant met his partner Alf in 1998 playing rugby, and their family now includes two grandchildren. In 2009 they were joined in a civil union. Along with his passion for sports, Grant is a fan of New Zealand music and literature, and loves cooking and movies.

GUEST SPEAKER, MURRAY THOM

Murray Thom left school at 15 with no qualifications. By the age of 23 he became Managing Director of CBS Records, the youngest Managing Director of that group in the world. With a strong desire to be self-employed, he left the corporate life 23 years ago to “have a go” on his own.

He founded and owned Personalised Plates in 1987 as a result of winning a government tender to act as the Ministry of Transport’s exclusive marketing agent to introduce personalised number plates into New Zealand. Personalised Plates Ltd enjoyed great success and, at its height, during Murray’s ownership, had a turnover of $30 million annually and a staff of 60. In 1997 he sold that company to pursue his real passion, the music business.

He now manages his own boutique record company, Thom Music, producing many bestselling albums and the company has enjoyed great success. Two of his recent productions: ‘Together’ and ‘Miracle’ have both featured on the Oprah Winfrey show.

Murray Thom has featured on Documentary New Zealand’s “the Midas Touch”. He made ‘NZ Business’ magazine’s Top 10 Entrepreneurs of the Decade, and featured in ‘Management’ magazine’s cover story on leadership.
