The Hilliard Area Chamberof Commerce can no w sa ve you money on your electricalcosts!
As we continue to look atways to save you money, wehave entered into an agreementwith Volunteer Energy, an ener-gy provider in Pickerington.
Volunteer Energy has teamedup with First Energy Solutions
of Akron to sell electricity at adiscount to Hilliard Chambermembers.
Eligible companies will payfrom 6.35 cents to 7.29 cents perkilowatt-hour, which Volunteerestimates is 10 – 40% less thanAEP charges most local busi-nesses.
Businesses are already sign-ing up to save themselves sig-
nificant dollars.Two factors have contributed
to creating this opportunity; first
the recent recession has led tolower wholesale electricity pricesand secondly AEP has had rate
increases during the same peri-od.
These factors have opened thedoor for competitors like Vol-unteer and First Energy Solu-tions to fill the void with muchlower prices.
Specifically Hilliard Cham-ber members can sign up by ac-cessing the Volunteer EnergyLink at the Hilliard Chamber of
Commerce website. If you have additional ques-
tions on how your business cansave money on your electric bill, please call Mike Capuanoof Volunteer Energy at 614-395-6834 or e-mail Mike at [email protected].

As 2010 wraps up, this is a great time to reflecton how your year went – both personally and pro-fessionally. Did you stick with your New Year’sresolutions? If not, why? Take a candid look at yourgoals and whether you succeeded in meeting them.Taking inventory in your business is a must, buttaking a yearly inventory of your goal progress isnecessary as well.
In reviewing our Chamber Mission and goals,we certainly made some great strides toward meet-ing or exceeding most of our objectives. We hadtwo board retreats this year. We were able to cometo a good consensus on what is most important forour Chamber to be a relevant and positive organi-zation for our members. We added a new (and fan-tastic!) event – Taste of Hilliard & Business Expo. And we were able to continue to grow our impor-tant fundraiser – The Hollyfest Scholarship Foun-dation – thanks to your donations and your help. We, as a Chamber, had a positive year in mem-bership, activities, and programs. We hope youwere able to join us at man y events. If not, add anew resolution for 2011 to make it out more often.
Begin your 2011 on the rightfoot by planning ahead no w.There’s a great website that helpsyou get your life organized –www.flylady.net. This site alsohas planning pages to help youthrough your workday as well. The Fly Lady is all about taking“baby steps” to get organizedand this is really great advice. Ifyou weren’t born with that “or-
ganization” gene, then her advice can really helpyou have a better year. Check it out – all the in-formation is free and helpful.
Although the economy has been v ery difficulton all small business owners, and 2011 may notlook any better, I hope you made the most of 2010every day. And I’m looking forward to sharing 2011with you.
Have a wonderful holiday season!

MAKE YOURGREAT OUTDOORS
GREATER!
Are you buying locally—especially this holiday season?1. Significantly more money re-
circulates in the area. When you purchase at locally owned
businesses rather than nationally owned, more money is kept in the communitybecause locally-owned businesses oftenpurchase from other local businesses, service providers and farms. Purchas-ing local helps grow other businessesas well as the Hilliard area taxbase.
2. Nonprofits receive greater sup-port.
Local business owners donate more
to local charities than non-local own-ers.
3. Unique businesses create char-acter and prosperity.
The unique character of Hilliard iswhat brought us here and keeps us here. Our tourism businesses also benefit.
4. Environmental impact is re-duced.
Local businesses make more localpurchases requiring less transportation. This generally means contributing lessto sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and
pollution.5. Most new jobs are provided by
local businesses.Small local businesses are the largest
employers nationally.6. Customer service is better.Local businesses often hire people
with more specific product expertisefor better customer service.
7. Local business owners invest incommunity.
Local businesses are owned by peo-ple who live in this community, are less
likely to leave, and are more investedin the community’s future.
8. Public benefits far outweigh pub-lic costs.
Local businesses require compara-tively little infrastructure and more ef-ficiently utilize public services relativeto chain stores.
9. Competition and diversity leadsto more consumer choices.
A marketplace of thousands of smallbusinesses is the best way to ensure in-novation and low prices over the long-
term.10. Investment in the Hilliard area
is encouraged.A growing body of economic re-
search shows that in an increasinglyhomogenized world, entrepreneurs andskilled workers are more likely to in-vest and settle in communities that pre-serve their one-of-a-kind businessesand distinctive character.
Buy something from a locally ownedbusiness this month—it will make adifference.

Over the years, as I have talkedwith budding entrepreneurs, itcontinues to amaze me ho wmany have not conducted any-thing close to a prudent amountof research as they start theirbusinesses. Indeed, they oftenact as if they must get their busi-ness going right now or they willjust pop.
This kind of impatience is dan-gerous.
Doing my best to talk themdown off the ledge, I walk thefine line between slowing themdown a little and dousing the fireof their entrepreneurial passionwith my tough love.
Yes, passion is important. Andwhen would-be small businessowners get that far away look intheir eyes at this impetuous stageof a start-up, they have plentyof passion for what the businessdoes. They can’t wait to sell suits, manufacture plastic parts, bakebagels or (your dream here). Butwhile their passion for what theywant to do will come in handy,
without a healthy attraction forbusiness fundamentals, passionhas only slightly more value thana dream. As the Texans say, it’sall hat and no cattle.
This will be on the test: Suc-cess as a small business ownerrequires two kinds of passion:The first is the love of what youwant to do, as described above. This is like the way a motherloves her newborn baby, and it’sthe easy kind. In fact, it’s tooeasy.
The object of the second kindof small business passion is lessadorable but not less important. This is passion for a professionthat requires dedication to learnand practice management fun-damentals and acceptance of areturn-on-investment timelinethat pushes the deferred gratifi-cation envelope. See, I told youit was less adorable. The clos-est kin to this kind of passionwould be that which is requiredfor parents to love their teenagersanyway, during those moments
when they don’t like them verymuch.
It’s critical for a starry-eyedstart-up to make the distinctionbetween these two types of pas-sion. Passion for what you sellwon’t be enough when payablesexceed receivables, making pay-roll (“Is it Friday again? Al-ready?!”), when customers arethe most difficult, when an em-ployee becomes part of the prob-lem, etc.
These and a long list of otherabiding small business challengeswill require you to deliver on themanagement fundamentals youbecame good at because you hadthat other kind of passion - thekind that made you become ahigh-performing, professionalbusiness owner, not just some-one who dreamed of being one.
Write this on a rock ... Smallbusiness success requires bothkinds of passion.
