With the changes introduced, some issues to attend to, but generally, most feedback stated positive vibes for the road ahead. Enjoy the deserved recharge time, as there are certainly busy times ahead with the planned club programs and events. I may sound like a stuck record, but PLEASE can I appeal to all members, especially during the winter period – run bright with good reflective gear, and run CLEAR, clear hearing with no ears “goodies” – being aware of our surrounds, is very important. For HVAC, next month is our AGM – 12 July 2018 . As already stated , I will be stepping down, for a new and positive chapter to lead HV forward. Without any doubt, any past success has been achieved through team work, and may I take this opportunity to thank each and everyone who has contributed to this growth and performance. To the various club and marathon committee members, a very big thank you again, as you ALL keep the club wheels turning. Our sub section relationship with Hillcrest Sport Club is on a sound and financially strong footing, and cognisance MUST be made by all, recognising the benefit we have of location and facility. To be able to host our annual marathon, the only marathon in the upper highway, we are blessed, and this must continue . Thank you all once again, all the best for the remainder of 2018, and looking forward to Glen Cairn. Rgds Peter B.

ELITE SQUAD Announcement: we would like to congratulate Derek Wasserfall on qualifying for the HVAC Elite Squad, and for signing up as part of the squad on 31 May. Derek ran a 1:19 half marathon at Woodview Starling Plumbers 21km. It is great for us as a club to acknowledge a man who is a loyal Villager, a fantastic runner on both road and trail, provides valuable input when asked and gives a lot back to the sport. Well done Derek!
THREE FALLS TRAIL RUN
Sunday 5 August 2018 - Three Falls Trail Run – There has been a great response from our
members and HVAC can boast a large number of entries for this event. Entries are sold out but
there is still the possibility of getting a substitute entry, or to be placed on the waiting list! It's a
tough 18.6km but no one cares what time you do. It's also for a great cause - all expenses are
covered by sponsors and every cent of the entry fee is ploughed into the reserve. There is also a
6.5km Fun Walk – enter on the day. The start and finish is at Forest View Primary and the
Villagers gazebo will be there (along with a cooler box and beverages of course). Please
take part in your 2018 Hillcrest Marathon T-shirt if you have one! Food will be sold by the school's
tuck shop. Friends and family welcome of course. More details at www.kloofconservancy.org.za
LETTER FROM A HILLCREST RESIDENT – PLEASE WILL ALL MEMBERS TAKE NOTE Hi Please, through you, can we urgently request that Villagers have a session with your members on the correct use of the Hillcrest roads when training. As an ex road runner (Golden Reef) we had a set of rules that allowed for a harmonious relationship with other road users. I am making this request after a number of incidents in the past couple of weeks which were totally unnecessary. We all know that there is virtually no twilight in Durban and it becomes dark quite rapidly, and combined with poor lighting on a number of our roads makes visibility very poor. I am a regular user of the roads around the Sports Club and have had a number incidents involving Villagers runners on Thursday evenings which have been unnecessary
1. ALL runners must have adequate reflectors or similar devices to make themselves visible. This must be compulsory.
2. Run on only the correct side of the road and when in a group don’t split up across the road which in many parts are narrow. Particularly those who do warm up runs.
3. Do not be abusive to motorists when, because of the lack of reflectors on the runners, put their lights on bright so as to see what the shape is approaching them.
4. When there are 2 cars driving in opposite directions down the road, runners need to move onto the verge ( not the cars) to let the cars pass each other.
5. If possible, have a senior runner at the head and rear and within the main training group to guide the runners and enforce the above.
We all don’t want an unnecessary accident. We all realise the runners need to use the roads, but it is not for their sole benefit and they also must respect the motorists that use the roads Thanking you in advance Kind regards, Rod Skjolde 082 320 3284
