T he highly anticipated final stage of Highpoint ’s $300 million redevelopment project presenting 100 new

retail stores was recently opened to the public following a four-year design process and two-year construction period. The new two-level extension added 30,000 square metres to the existing centre, first built in 1975 – bringing the development to 156,000 square metres and making it the second largest shopping centre in Australia.

Architecturally designed to deliver a unique shopping experience, Grimshaw Architects explored removing the barriers associated with traditional shopping malls. Taking inspiration from art galleries and the free form flow of the local Maribyrnong River, the result is a contemporary space that pays homage to its heritage while creating an abundance of natural ventilation and light.

One key feature of the centre is the visually strik ing Eco-Spine, a floating roof structure built from sustainable materials that l ines the fashion hall. The roof frame is made of structural steel with recycled content and laminated veneer lumbar (LVL) from sustainable timber. The roof l ining is also made of sustainable timber sources. Operable louvers constructed from aluminium sandwich panel l ine the eco-spine, and open and close to facilitate the amount of natural l ight and fresh air to deliver to the centre when the weather allows it . Timber and bluestone are also used throughout the interior to strengthen the connection with the outside.

The eco-spine roof is not only a beautiful architectural feature, it also helps the centre to achieve a 53 per cent reduction in energy use. ETFE pillows divide the timber sections to draw in natural l ight and sustainable rheinzink has been used on the remaining roof structure. The ceiling warm finishes and soft organic curves encourage visitors to move through the space and engage with the development.

Lighting design firm, Electrolight (Melbourne office), was appointed to work on the il lumination of this new retail area. To light the already eye-catching ceiling structure, the designers followed the architects design initiative and selected an energy efficient luminaire with optimal efficacy and precise optics to complement the architectural structure without creating a distraction or discomforting glare.

The Megabay Accento 8W LED was the per fect addition to the project l ighting scheme. Installed in between the timber r ibs, it creates a soft grazing effect over the lining sur face. The luminaire was specified in 2800K warmer white colour temperature to accentuate the earthy tones of the timber finish and with a narrow light distribution to achieve greater coverage along the length of the structure panels and blades. Compact in size, the Accento A8 – with its solid brass construction – is the ideal architectural luminaire; it is not only required to provide excellent per formance in different weather conditions but also to be easily integrated within the architecture without becoming an intrusive element.

The Megabay Accento range of multipurpose exterior luminaires will accentuate featured subjects, highlight landscape elements or provide functional ambience. Power ful yet compact, they are easily concealed to minimise glare that would distract from the il lumination effect, while boasting an impressive size to light output. Precision machined from pressure cast DZR Brass, with excellent corrosion resistance and thermal per formance, they are built to last.

The expansion of the Highpoint shopping centre represents a step forward for “Green Design” within the retail landscape. A n increasing number of young socialites and creative professionals in China has tr iggered the popularity of

coffee culture and has rapidly turned coffee consumption into a highly competitive industry.

Within this market, Coordination Asia took on the challenge to re-design deli and eatery, Gaga, a young, fresh, modern and fashion forward brand that distinguishes itself with its great eye for detail. Coordination Asia took the essence of what has made Gaga into a success, and created a one-of-a-k ind space that blurs the boundaries between the indoor and the outdoor. And much of its eye-catching design can be attributed to the eatery ’s intricate lighting scheme.

The main concept for the new interior - “blurring thresholds” - results in a pleasantly spacious feel and a strong pull factor for passers-by. The indoor and outdoor spaces of the eatery are connected through a custom-made ceiling installation of lamellas, which looks like a burst of sunrays from deep within the store. The lamellas continue onto the walls to create shelves for merchandises. In the evening, Gaga takes on a lounge atmosphere as the lights dim.

The custom-made ceiling installation of lamellas is l it and reflected in a mirrored wall at the end of the space, creating the il lusion of infinite continuation. As the lamellas continue onto the walls and turn into shelves, l ighting strips are placed along the inside edge of the shelves to il luminate and draw attention to merchandises and decor.

Spotlights are cleverly incorporated between the lamellas, strategically placed to create a play of l ight and dark , which adds to the character of the space.

The distinguishing character of Gaga is carefully expressed through the lighting scheme. A large-scale chandelier serves as an iconic element, which makes the space eye-catching and recognisable. In the expansion of Gaga’s new store concept, this will be a returning element to create unity.

Above each table is a crystal pendant bulb by Le Broom that demonstrates the delicate craftsmanship of crystal cutting, per fectly complimenting the simple yet elegant wooden tabletops.

Industrial elements are added to the otherwise sleek space. Two oversized workshop style lamps extend from the mirror wall at the end of the store to bring attention to the main counter, and three additional workshop style pendant lamps hang above the long bar table. ■

L ocated at the Estérel Resort in the Laurentian Mountains area of Quebec, the Emotion Hotel is

surrounded by breathtaking scenery. Guests can gaze out of their windows at a serene lake view, framed by evergreens that reach out to the silhouetted outline of mountains on the horizon.

When Camdi Design’s team was engaged to re-design the interior of the hotel, they were tasked with rejuvenating an ageing building. As part of a two-phase renovation project, Camdi Design set about bringing the soul of the countryside into the heartbeat of the hotel.

“We wanted to make sure the lake and the beautiful landscape was visible wherever possible - from corridors, staircases and common areas, as well as guest rooms,” explained Pierre Brousseau, President of Camdi Design. “And we wanted to bring nature inside by using the right design elements and lighting.”

The firm set about designing a space that was inspired by nature, and the lighting concept would play a focal role in realising that vision.

To maintain interest, the design team was careful to avoid a uniform lighting style throughout the hotel. The firm chose to work with Bloom Lighting Group to create custom lighting elements based on leaf designs and natural elements to give every area a unique, fresh feel.

The experience begins in the lobby with a series of six contemporary chandeliers in front of the reception desk . Created with hand formed glass features hanging from laser cut metal branches, the fixtures are finished in white to resemble snow covered tree tops.

Along the corridors, 120 linear wall mounted lights, made with teak veneer and a vertical grain low gloss finish overlay, mark the way. And guest rooms are identified with LED number fixtures. Common areas are adorned with a soothing yellowish glow from a series of floor lamps; the white acrylic diffuser and linen fabric shade softening the light produced by nine medium base GU24 lamps. The areas are il luminated and energised by pendants that feature chrome ribbons, swirling wild as if blowing in the wind.

In the restaurant, crystal balls appear l ike raindrops hanging from the chromed wire chandeliers. They reflect natural l ight through the large windows in the daytime, and spark le with the warm glow created by the light source in the evenings.

Pendants from the David Trubridge lighting collection hang above the staircase leading from the restaurant down to the spa and lake outside. The cluster features three products, Kina, Hinaki and Koura, that allow the visitor to see through the shades to the landscape outside, as they descend the stairs.

Large 36-inch diameter globes made with a series of polished chrome metal r ings compliment the stone flooring and walls in the corporate area.

And finally, orange and white suspended fixtures were used to give a modern feel in the guest condo apartments. With polycarbonate fins of various densities and shapes clipped on to radial core, these lights provide a diffused ambient il lumination.

“We set about creating a light, airy and welcoming environment using materials and designs that were inspired by nature,” said Brousseau. “And with some truly unique lighting from Bloom Lighting Group, we have accomplished that, and received very positive feedback.” ■

T he commissioned design is comprised of an interior, exterior and landscape lighting scheme for a newly

built private villa. The villa serves as a holiday resort for the client, his family and fr iends.

The project consists of many different spaces including: main building on two floors with the main hall, gallery, study and master suite on the first floor, family room, cinema and two en-suite bedrooms on the ground floor ; staff wing and garage; gym satellite, spa satellite, two guest en-suite satellites; dining sala over a pond, a swimming pool; numerous terraces, decks, reflecting pools, landscaped areas around the house and the beach area. The total interior area is 1,500 square metres and the plot area is 11,000 square metres.

The programme, the scale and the complexity of the project are equivalent to an exclusive boutique hotel. Design concept and realisation The architectural design of the villa emphasises the interconnection between the interior and exterior spaces; a number of external terraces, reflecting pools and landscape areas blend with the interior spaces that open up to magnificent views.

Traditional architectural elements, such as high-pitched roofs, slatted screens and canopies, combined with the contemporary design and references to local sources in terms of materials (timber, silk , gold), offer many possibilities for l ighting integration to support the architectural language and to enhance the quality of materials and interior design. Due to large glazed facade sur faces, the interior of the house also forms part of the external image at night. The interior l ighting is required to enhance the architectural and interior design to best effect, to be both functional and visually interesting, fully integrated, or as inconspicuous as possible, with maximum glare control. Warm and consistent colour temperature, excellent colour rendering, as well as the ability to dim smoothly to very low levels, are crucial to the scheme. As this is a resort, mood lighting and flexibility are essential and so

all l ighting is controlled through a central l ighting scene set system.

The project is designed to the highest specification, including many integrated lighting details and effects. Concealed linear l ighting is used for uplighting to sloped timber ceilings, ceiling coffers, ceiling coves to curtains and walls, display niches and vertical cove lighting.

Ceiling coves also conceal accent downlights to decorative window drapes (warm white to ‘golden’ silk fabric, and fresh cool white to ‘silver ’ fabric). Carefully positioned low glare pinhole downlights and spotlights with various beam angles and accessories provide ambient lighting to floor and accent lighting to artwork . Built-in tr imless, low-level wall l ights for l ighting to floor are used in the circulation areas. The columns are accentuated by narrow beam floor recessed uplights. Decorative chandeliers are used for spark le, whilst table lamps with

glowing shades soften the ambient effect at eye level.

A consistent lighting approach has been employed throughout the project – all l ighting elements work together with the materials and forms to create optimum lighting conditions throughout the house. Lighting equipment Originally specified back in 2008, and partly reviewed in 2010, the lighting scheme features a fair number of tungsten halogen sources for ambient lighting. This design decision is understandable considering the viability of LEDs at the time of specification.

Besides, being a holiday resort, the villa is only to be occupied for a l imited period of time per year and all l ighting is dimmable and fully controlled via a central l ighting control system.

The scheme also includes cold cathode fittings for built-in architectural details and LEDs for joinery details and for external elements such as linear l ighting integrated to handrails, platforms and step nosing details, miniature paths, step and planter l ights and lighting within the pool.

The lighting control for each area of the project is programmed to provide at least four scenes. All external and landscape lighting is activated automatically via astronomical time clock.

There are a number of settings that allow different operations in occupational mode (guests visiting) and non-occupational/safety mode (staff only). The control system contributes significantly to energy consumption savings and to minimising maintenance costs. ■

LED Technology – in conjunct ion with architectural l ight ing – is used mainly with rectangular f loodl ights and l inear battens. Unfortunately, rotat ional ly symmetr ical LED spots and projectors, whose funct ional i ty and performance approximately equal the convent ional HIT projectors, fa i led due to the lack of avai labi l i ty of appropriate LED engines and suitable opt ics. But through the implementat ion of the new Cit izen COB technology and an adapted ref lector technology, new and interest ing opportunit ies have become avai lable for architectural and landscape l ight ing.

I t is a chal lenge for product designers and manufacturers to integrate the new technology into the body of outdoor luminaires, whi le complying with al l the parameters with an attract ive design and at reasonable costs. This includes the protect ion class, the required robustness when used in publ ic areas and the simpl ic i ty of the instal lat ion. The demand for temperature management, the modular integrat ion of l ight ing technology and the f lexibi l i ty in the appl icat ion are also essent ia l parameters to consider.

Based on a 10-year experience in the design, development and manufactur ing of outdoor luminaires for renowned l ight ing brands in Europe and Asia, and the implementat ion of German Engineer ing know-how, the company has successful ly developed an attract ive solut ion.

Through the ut i l isat ion of the Cit izen COB ser ies CLL032 and CLL042, and the adapted ref lector technology of LEDIL, Forms & Moulds (M) Sdn. Bhd. has developed the projector ser ies L-PRO 72, which is obtainable in four di fferent s izes. With a performance between 11W and 75W, and a luminous f lux between 1300 lm and 7670 lm, the new projector ser ies provides high f lexibi l i ty in i ts appl icat ion.

The luminaires are al l manufactured from powder coated die-cast aluminium. The thermo management is guaranteed by an opt imised projector head, which acts as a heat s ink, and the thermal separat ion between the LED and the dr iver compartments. An encapsulated dr iver with a protect ion class of IP67 is ut i l ised upon the housing operates within IP65. Al l these measures provide addit ional protect ion for the implemented electronics within the luminaire.
