Chapter 9—Electronic Resources

• 9.3 Type and extent of resource area (now renamed to Material (or type of publication) specific details area) has been deleted for electronic resources.

NO MORE 256!!!!

Rule 9.5—Lot’s of Options9.5B3

• Option 1 (9.5B3): Use the physical description area for remote access electronic resources.

• “Optionally, record the extent of an electronic resource that is available only by remote access. Use an appropriate term preferably taken from subrule .5B of one of the chapters of part I or a term in common usage.”

9.5B4• Option 2a: Record the extent of the resource

(e.g. number of files or bytes) in the 300 field OR• Option 2b: in a note field (516) OR• Option 2c: not at all.• Formerly: 256 Electronic data (2 files :

Chapter 12—Continuing Resources

• Other title information (12.1E1): Rule generalized that it can be applied to both IRs and serials.

• Transcribe other title information if considered to be important.

• Do not transcribe if it only relates to currency of contents or frequency

• Rules on when OT has to be transcribed remain the same.

Chapter 21—Choice of Access Points

• 21.2 Changes in titles proper

reorganized into three parts:

21.2A Multipart monographs

21.2B Integrating resources

21.2C Serials

21.2A—Multipart monographs

• “If a change occurs in the title proper of a multipart monograph between parts, give/retain the title proper of the first or earliest part as the title proper of the whole monograph. In general, give the later title proper in a note and make an added entry as instructed in 21.30J1”

• Concept of predominance has been removed.

LC/PCC Policy & Practice

• Unnumbered multipart items:

Previously, separate series authority records were made for each title change.

Now there should be only 1 record (as was always the case for numbered multipart items)

However, do not change records retroactively.

LC/PCC Practice & Policy 2

• If unable to use the first or earliest part as the basis of the description, use the earliest part available and include “description based on note” in the record for the set.

21.2B—Integrating Resources

• Rules remain unchanged:• “If a change occurs in the title proper of

the same integrating resource, do not make a new entry. Instead, replace the title proper with the new title and change the description to reflect the latest iteration. In general, give the earlier title proper in a note (see 12.7B4.2) and make an added entry as instructed in 21.30J1”

21.2Ca&b--Serials

• Major and minor changes relate only to serials.

• If the title change is minor make an added entry for the new title

21.3--Changes of Persons or Bodies Responsible for a Work

• 21.3A2: Multipart monographs

Concept of predominance has been removed: “Enter the monograph under the heading appropriate to the first or earliest part”

PCC/LC policy & practice: mirrors decision for 21.2A

21.6—Works of Shared Responsibility

• 21.6A1: Change in scope. Not to be applied to multipart monographs when there is a change in responsibility between parts.

21.29—Added Entries

• 21.29B: Expanded to cover added entries

for persons, corporate bodies, and titles for:

• 1) for later parts of a multipart monograph

• 2) for earlier iterations of an integrating resource

• 3) for later issues or parts of a serial

if considered necessary

21.30J1--Titles

• Exceptions to the rule have been removed in the 2003 upd. and replaced by the phrase:

“Optionally, make such added entries in accordance with the policy of the cataloguing agency.”

21.30J1—2004 Update

• 21.30J1c: the option to make an added entry for an earlier title of a multipart monograph has been removed, since the first or earliest part is now the basis of the description.

24.20C--Heads of governments and of international

intergovernmental bodies• Revised to add dates and names to the

headings for heads of governments and heads of international intergovernmental organizations acting in official capacity.

Previously: United Kingdom. Prime minister

Now: United Kingdom. Prime Minister (1979-1990 : Thatcher)

24.20C continued

• Enter a head of government acting in an official capacity (see 21.4D1) who is not also a head of state under the heading for the jurisdiction, followed by the title of the official in the vernacular. Add the inclusive years of the incumbency and the name of the person in a brief form and in the language of the heading for that person.

24.20C3—NEW!

• “If a heading is established for an incumbent head of government, etc., as a person in addition to the heading as a head of government, etc., make an explanatory reference under the heading for the head of government, etc., (see 26.3C1).”

• Example from 26.3C1: Iran. Shah (1941-1979 : Mohammed Reza Pahlavi) Here are entered works of the Shah acting in his official

capacity. For other works, see Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, Shah of

Iran
