Book Club December: Ava's Man by Rick Bragg

A personal history of the Deep South. About the author's

grandfather, an unlettered roofer who kept food on his family's table

through the worst of the Great Depression; a moonshiner who drank

exactly one pint for every gallon he sold; an unregenerate brawler,

who could sit for hours with a baby in the crook of his arm. Bragg

conjures up the backwoods hamlets of GA and AL in the years when the roads were still dirt and

real men never cussed in front of ladies. A masterly family chronicle and a human portrait so vivid

you can smell the cornbread and whiskey.

January: The Emperor of Ocean Park by Stephen L. Carter Carter combines a riveting legal thriller with the saga of a unique family, set in two privileged

worlds: the upper-crust African-American society of the Eastern seaboard and the inner circle of

an Ivy League law school.

March: Shakespeare Saved My Life: Ten Years in Solitary with the Bard by Laura Bates

Nonfiction. This uplifting story of friendship is about Shakespeare professor and prison volunteer

Laura Bates who taught Shakespeare to inmates in the maximum security wing of an Indiana

prison.

Winter Storms It is hard to know when winter storms will hit year-to-year. But this year, make sure you are prepared for any that come our way. Winter storms are seen when the temperatures drop and there may be ice, sleet, snow or freezing rain. There are many different types of winter storms. Sometimes, there is only a day or two of snowy powder and sometimes there is an icy mess. During these times, it is important to listen to the radio or TV and have an idea of what to expect. These are some of the phrases you may hear: Winter Storm Outlook – This means that there is a winter storm that is expected within the next 2 to 5 days. If you hear this, it may be a good time to make sure that you have everything you need in case the storm actually hits. Winter Weather Advisory – This means that winter weather conditions are expected and may cause problems. If there is a winter weather advisory, caution should be used and it may be unsafe to travel. Winter Storm Watch – This means that winter storms are possible within the next 36 to 48 hours. If a winter storm watch is given in your area, you should make sure that you stay up-to-date on the weather conditions. Winter Storm Warning – This means that winter storms either have begun or will begin within the next 24 hours. Make sure that you and your family take precautions. To make sure that you are prepared for a winter storm, it is recommended that you have rock salt or a similar product ready. This will help melt ice on driveways, sidewalks and areas around the house such as steps. It is also recommended that you keep the gas tank closer to full. Having a fuller tank will actually keep the gas lines from freezing in your car. Make sure to stay safe this winter and watch out for these warnings and watches. Healthy Relationships Include Knowing Yourself Finding and keeping good relationships starts with you. One way to a healthier relationship and positive growth and development is to learn about yourself—both the strengths and the weaknesses. Knowing yourself helps you better take charge of your own life and future, which ultimately helps you become a better person, parent or partner. Learning and examining more about your personality style is a powerful way to get to know yourself better. Your personality style influences how you see and react to things and how you make decisions. It is important to know your personality style because it makes you more aware that your way of being, doing and seeing is not necessarily the only way. Knowing yourself helps you get to know others and better appreciate that person’s view of the world. Remember, a mix of similarities and differences can draw you together, but it is important to be able to appreciate the differences and balance them out to help you both be better people. Be Food Safe in the New Year! You can help keep your family safe from food poisoning by following four basic steps: clean, separate, cook and chill. The USDA offers these tips to reduce the risk of foodborne illness for the new year and beyond:

Wash hands with soap and water, scrubbing for 20 seconds. Rinse well and dry with a clean paper towel. Use the towel to turn off the faucet, if possible.

Wash and sanitize counters and other surfaces. Use hot, soapy water to wash and a solution of one tablespoon of unscented chlorine bleach per gallon of water to sanitize.

At least once a week, throw out refrigerated foods that should no longer be eaten. Discard cooked leftovers after four days, raw poultry and ground meats after one to two days.

Keep appliances clean, inside and out. Pay special attention to handles and buttons, where contamination can be spread to hands.

Rinse fruits and vegetables under running water just before eating, cutting or cooking, including those that will be peeled. This helps prevent bacteria from being carried from the outside to the inside of the produce.

Separate foods when shopping and storing. Place raw seafood, meat and poultry in plastic bags and store them below prepared foods in the refrigerator.

Separate foods when preparing and serving. Use a clean cutting board for fresh produce and a separate one for raw meats. Never put cooked food back on the same plate that held the raw food.

Cook food to a safe internal temperature: at least 145 degrees F for beef, pork, lamb and veal (steaks, chops and roasts), with a three-minute resting period; 160 degrees F for ground beef, pork, lamb and veal; 165 degrees F for all poultry, including ground, and 165 degrees F for leftovers.

Use a food thermometer. Appearance is not a reliable test of doneness.

Keep cold foods cold (40 degrees F or below) and hot foods hot (140 degrees F or above). Discard perishable foods that have been at room temperature for more than two hours (one hour if the temperature is above 90 degrees F). Reference: USDA. (2012). Be Food Safe. Avoid Identity Theft by Protecting Your Personal Information Your Social Security number and mother’s maiden name are usually needed to steal your identity. Among other information you should keep private are your driver’s license number, credit card numbers and birth date. When filling out forms or making a purchase, give only necessary information. Don’t feel bad about leaving blanks if someone asks too much. There are no laws prohibiting businesses or nonprofit organizations from asking for Social Security numbers. However, no law requires you to give your Social Security number to a business or organization. Many supermarkets, other stores and even libraries, will accept your telephone number or some other number instead, if you ask. Reference: Flashman, R. H., & Lesueur, A., Jr. (2012, March).
