Mick Kauffman has been a volunteer for Camp Chimaqua, Hospice &

Community Care’s bereavement camp for 20 years. Mick is a volunteer, however, he has put significant work into Camp Chimaqua to help expand the program and make it a transformational experience for the children to learn from camp activities as they grieve. Over the years he has transitioned from a buddy at camp to a position that a staff member would hold, providing more guidance and insight at each camp. Mick has developed several innovative ways to engage campers, one being decorating and sailing boats. He spends five or six hours at home assembling the boats prior to camp and sees the impact of spending that personal time preparing the supplies and boats as his privilege. The campers each receive their own boat and decorate them individually using the favorite color of the loved one who passed away. After they are decorated a votive is placed in the middle of each boat and they are carried to the water, where the candle

is lit as each child says the name of their loved one and pushes their boat into the water to watch it float away. After each boat has been sailed, the children return to the campfire and say one word that reminds them of their loved one. “One girl said inspire. It

was what her loved one was to her and what she wanted to be to others.”

“One of my favorite moments at camp is when the children set their boats into the water and sail them off and we have a moment of silence. It’s so quiet you can hear a pin drop as you watch these beautiful boats float away as memories,” he says. He is always thinking of new ways to help these kids as they grieve. Another activity that he leads which leaves a big impact on the children is a hike through the woods on their last morning. As he takes the campers and their buddies through the woods he can hear many heartwarming and meaningful conversations. During the hike Mick takes them to a rock that has a tree growing through it, which he uses as a lesson to the campers that no matter what obstacles there may be there is always a way to work through it.

Mick looks back on his first year as a buddy, “The child I was a buddy to was very reserved. I didn’t feel that I was connecting with him, so I approached the Hospice staff and asked if I was doing anything wrong. They reassured me that I was not, but I just needed

to be there for him. As camp came to an end I still wasn’t sure if I had helped this quiet child, wondering what I could do differently or better. He got into the car to leave and as his mom joined him in the driver’s side he whipped open the door, jumped out of the car and gave me a big hug. I knew then it wasn’t about what I did, it was really just being there for him.” Mick takes what he has learned from this first child and has used that as he has volunteered at different programs throughout Hospice.

Mick also volunteers with the Coping Kids & Teens grief support series held on Thursday evenings at the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss. Mick is facilitating the eight-week family support program that involves not just the children and teens who are grieving, but the parents or guardians who are supporting them during this difficult time. Working his way up to a group leader, he uses the lesson from the quiet, shy camper who he supported during his first year at Camp Chimaqua with the children and teenagers in the program so he can really “be” with them in this grieving process.

Mick keeps going back year-after-year to Camp Chimaqua, and he thinks every time that he is going to help a child but the child ends up helping him. “I’ve been a buddy at Camp Chimaqua for 20 years, and I feel like each year the child I’m a buddy to helps me grow

and develop as a person. I’ve had two decades of helping grieving kids and grieving kids helping me.” He has a unique, gentle way with grieving children that is like no other, and it is noticed by the staff and other volunteers.

In addition to being so dedicated to the children and teens he is also very dedicated to Hospice & Community Care. “I have so much gratitude to Hospice for providing the wonderful care and support that it does, that I and other volunteers can come back to year after year and feel valued.” As happy as Mick is to be volunteering here we are just as happy to have him as a volunteer.

Three Decades of Service…

Leading the Labor Day Auction

30 years ago at the Willow Street Fire Company, Tom Buter was unboxing

items to be auctioned off at Hospice of Lancaster County’s Labor Day Auction. Fast forward 7 years and this man is still unpacking boxes, but now as the Chair of the Labor Day Auction Committee, a post he has held for the past 23 years. During that time Tom has devoted himself and many an hour to making the Labor Day Auction a success each year, well-accomplished after raising more than $710,000 in 2016.

“Tom’s service to Hospice & Community Care is so important to Groff’s mission and, as such, our support of both Tom and Hospice has been unwavering for more than three decades.” ~Lisa Groff President

He was there to lead the move of the Auction to a bigger location at the Lampeter Fairgrounds in 2000 when it outgrew the Willow Street Fire Company. When Hospice made this move he knew that the Auction was going to continue growing each year. “Hospice touches the lives of so many, and will continue to do so as we provide care for more people in Lancaster County and beyond,” he said. Hospice of Lancaster County expanded into York County and in 2012 changed its name to Hospice & Community Care. In 2016 more space was necessary to offer all the auctions being added and to accommodate an increased number of attendees. So

Tom led another significant move to the southern end of Lancaster County…the Solanco Fairgrounds.

As Hospice & Community Care continues to expand, Tom makes sure the Auction is expanding in tandem. Through the years under his volunteer leadership, the Auction continues to get better. “We do that by listening to attendees, committee members and staff on what would make their Auction experience better. We learn every year and make updates and changes to the two-day event,” he says. As Tom continues his role as Chair he plans on continual success at the Auction.

“Hospice & Community Care has evolved in its services and offers terrific patient care. Everyone has a story of how Hospice has touched their life. People want to give back, whether they purchase a piece of artwork, a handmade bench, or if they volunteer at the Auction. This is an opportunity for many to feel that they are contributing,” he explains. Tom continues to devote his time to the Labor Day Auction Committee so Hospice can continue providing patients and families with the highest quality hospice, palliative and supportive care, and bereavement services through its Pathways Center for Grief & Loss.

Tom continues to help make the Labor Day Auction a success with his distinct leadership and hard work in leading the Labor Day Auction Committee. Tom was recognized for 30 years of volunteer service to Hospice & Community Care at the Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner held in April of this year, sponsored by Hospice Founding Partner, Groff Family Funeral & Cremation Services. Lisa Groff, president, noted, “Tom’s service to Hospice & Community Care is so important to Groff’s mission and, as such, our support of both Tom and Hospice has been unwavering for more than three decades.” This year marks Tom’s 50th year of service as an employee of Groff Family Funeral & Cremation Services, something that is rarely accomplished in one person’s career. His service as a dedicated volunteer for 30 years is appreciated beyond measure, and everyone looks forward to more Labor Day Auctions with Tom Buter as the guiding Chair!

Calling All Art Lovers

Art Auction Saturday, 1:00 p.m.

5

This year Hospice & Community Care’s Labor Day Auction will again feature a specialty Art

Auction sponsored by NITRO Cutting Services and Herr & Sacco. The Art Auction will take place on Saturday September 2 at 1:00 p.m. As the Auction has grown at its new location at the Solanco Fairgrounds, so have the specialty auctions, making Saturday as packed as Monday. The Art Auction will include art from many popular and well-known artists in the local community. There will be work in all mediums: watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastels, both framed and unframed. Three-dimensional pieces, wood-turned bowls, and mixed media will also be featured.

Expect even more wonderful pieces from local artists who have donated their original artwork to the Art Auction for years. The Auction allows artists the opportunity to showcase their talent and work to support care and services for Hospice & Community Care patients and families.

Art Auction sponsor, NITRO Cutting Services and Herr & Sacco, has created a beautiful Dragonfly Garden Ornament which will be sold at the

Auction both on Saturday and Monday.

Last year NITRO created the first Butterfly garden ornament, which was sold at the Auction and throughout the year at Hospice events and at the Bob Fryer & Family Inpatient Center. A dragonfly is taking center stage as this year’s commemorative garden ornament of the Auction. The ornaments will be sold for $25 each and buyers will be able to purchase them with cash or add them to their bidder number. All funds raised help to provide hospice, palliative and supportive care, and bereavement support for patients and families who are coping with serious illness and loss.

Glenn Blue heard some chatter over the police scanner on October 2, 2006 as a PA

State Trooper, but the local police didn’t answer his call offering help. The chatter referred to an incident in Bart Township, Lancaster County and Glenn could hear the agitation in the voices on the radio. With no answer to his offer, he continued to his post in Avondale. He was met with the devastating news that a gunman had barricaded himself in an Amish schoolhouse and the local police requested help. By the time Glenn arrived on the scene at Nickel Mines, shots had already been fired and the gunman was no longer a threat. “I set up a perimeter,” he explains. “I examined the scene as a cop who hadn’t been involved in the gunfire. I saw the gunman’s milk truck and retrieved his belongings.” Glenn called the gunman’s mother and was the first to interview his wife. He was involved in the debriefings and heartache as the local police and state troopers tried to make sense of the tragedy.

The county, and nation, watched as the Amish community came together to grieve the loss of five little girls that day, and five more who were injured. We all watched as they forgave the gunman and pressed forward to persevere as a bonded community, even with the grief and loss.

As the Amish tried to mend, Glenn was asked to paint a picture commemorating the day to be hung in the State Trooper barracks (Troop J). A career law enforcement officer, Glenn is also an accomplished artist. Both of his parents graduated from Kutztown University with art degrees,

and his younger brother followed suit. “I was always interested in law enforcement, and I joined the Navy after high school,” he says. But he grew up surrounded by art, always having access to his parents’ home art studio and constantly learning from them.

When he was approached to create the Nickel Mines painting, Glenn wasn’t sure he could. “I was hesitant because art is subjective and I didn’t want to offend anyone with my personal representation of the day.” He thought about it, and came back to Troop J’s commander, Jack Laufer, in agreement. By this time, the Amish community had razed the original schoolhouse and built another, so Laufer provided crime scene photos for Glenn to study and recreate the

picturesque one-room schoolhouse. “I studied the discs of crime scene photos and visited the spot where the schoolhouse stood to understand the lighting. I wanted to know how the sun hit the schoolhouse at mid-morning, late afternoon, dusk and just as a new day was beginning.” He explained the challenges of not having a physical object to view and paint in likeness. But even with all of his research he trashed his first draft. The second try fit better, even if he wasn’t completely in love with it so he took it to Troop J one evening and three

troopers working the night shift saw it and asked for copies. “I wasn’t even finished with it yet, and they were telling me how great it was,” he says. He came home and finished it, had it framed and brought it to the 2008 dedication at the Troop J barracks.

“At the painting dedication the Amish families who had lost their daughters that day stood among the troopers who tried to save them. I wasn’t expecting to see the Amish families and it made me slightly nervous to unveil my rendition of the schoolhouse.” Being nervous about his work wasn’t a usual feeling for Glenn as he had sold his first painting at 18 and participated in local, national and international shows. But the Amish loved the painting, which he

titled “Remembering Nickel Mines”. Christian (Chris) Stolzfus, who is an active bid spotter at the Hospice Labor Day Auction, lost a daughter, Naomi Rose, and had another daughter severely wounded at Nickel Mines. Chris approached him asking for prints of the painting. He wasn’t anticipating making copies, but couldn’t deny this father such a healing request.

Chris and Glenn became friends through the painting and keep in touch. The print of “Remembering Nickel Mines” hangs in Chris’s living room. The significance is not lost on any of his children, and his sons each have a print.

Another request for prints came in from an Amish father who had sons involved in the Nickel Mines tragedy, Aaron Esh. Glenn gave Aaron copies and found himself receiving more requests from victims’ families. “I personally took each print to the homes of the Amish families, and sat down with each of them,” Glenn says. “Aaron would organize the time, and my wife and I would go to meet them. Every family was so gracious and thankful.” He remembers that they all asked the same question: did you see my daughter? “I was not prepared for that question because I had seen all of the children that day, and I had to move from being an artist at that moment back to being a cop.” He describes the transition as more difficult at that moment than he expected, because art was always his release from the stress and tenseness of being a state trooper. Being with the Amish families combined both in a moment. “Each family wanted to tell their story and wanted to hear mine of that day.”

“I am so happy that what I created to memorialize Nickel Mines made the victims’ families feel peace,” he says. He describes the scene he painted as one of a new day. “I wanted to make it recognizable, while not alluding to anything negative. I wanted to portray warmth and showing the sun rising and shining here, on this particular spot on this day embodied it for me.” He purposefully left out people, but included five doves in flight for the five girls lost that day, five more perched on the tree for the five wounded and five rays of sunshine beaming down on the spot.

This painting helped a community heal after a devastating tragedy and Glenn continues to receive requests for prints. He honors requests from victims’ families but no longer makes prints for the community. Labor Day Auction attendees will have the opportunity to bid on a limited, signed giclee print on watercolor paper at the Art Auction, Saturday, September 2, 1:00 p.m. The Art Auction is sponsored by NITRO Cutting Services.

“I am so happy that what I created to memorialize Nickel Mines made the victims’ families feel peace.”

Hospice Quality Reporting Making Results Public

E veryone wants to receive the highest-quality healthcare available, and many of us seek out

information that leads us to the best decisions on which physician to visit, what hospital to use and even what procedures to choose. Much of this research is done online, with a Google search. But, where did the internet get these statistics, and who reported it to whom? The best, most reliable source is the federal government’s Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services or CMS and its reports generated from required information shared by healthcare providers.

You have probably seen the ranking of local retirement communities in the newspaper, along with any deficiencies

they received as well as how many ‘stars’ they were rated by CMS. This was all done through reporting to the federal government or CMS on specific, pre-determined quality indicators. As noted on the website, ‘CMS implements quality initiatives to assure quality health care for Medicare Beneficiaries through accountability and public disclosure.’ This is why the rating is made public so we can make the most informed decisions about our healthcare.

So what does this have to do with Hospice & Community Care? CMS is planning to make the required quality indicator reports given to them by hospice providers public in the coming months. Hospice & Community

Care has been submitting these reports for nearly two years, based on documentation in its clinical records and patient and family feedback. We have been responding to the surveys we receive, making policy updates, keeping strict logs and compiling data that is sent to Medicare. When these quality indicators are made public, CMS will provide a website for individuals to visit and compare hospice providers locally, nationally and internationally.

When the reports are available, the public is simply able to view information as reported to CMS. More information will be available in the coming months. Details are available at www.cms.gov.

Questions to Ask When Choosing a Hospice Provider

Are the hospice’s physicians certified or credentialed in hospice and palliative care? Many clinical staff, specifically each of Hospice & Community Care’s physicians, are specially trained and certified in hospice care and palliative medicine. Our Palliative Medicine Consultants physicians are each board certified.

What ‘extra’ services does hospice offer?Hospice & Community Care offers many support services; however, we do not consider them to be extra. We think of all of our services to be part of the hospice care provided to our patients. Some of the services that we provide, which may not be provided by other hospices, include complementary therapies (massage and music), specialized programs for children and Veterans, staff specially trained in dementia and wound care, full-time palliative medicine physicians, and a center for bereavement and support.

What national governing board or association is hospice affiliated with?Hospice & Community Care is a member of the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) and complies with every standard. Additionally, Hospice & Community Care staff serve on the NHPCO Board of Directors and commitees.

Is there an accrediting body for hospice?Hospice & Community Care is accredited by the Joint Commission, an independent, not-for-profit organization that certifies nearly 21,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting performance standards.

President’s Letter

Every month Hospice cares for more patients and families through our hospice services, palliative and supportive care and bereavement support at the

Pathways Center for Grief & Loss. We continue to enhance all of our services with the outstanding support of our staff, volunteers and the community.

With such growth, especially in York County, our clinical staff is caring for more patients each day than ever before. As a result, we are actively hiring compassionate, dedicated nurses to join our Hospice family for a variety of positions, both full and part-time. Visit hospicecomunity.org for all of our job listings and to submit an online application.

Hospice care would not be possible without the generous support that we receive from the community. A significant portion of this support is seen during our Labor Day Auction, taking place on September 2 and 4 at the Solanco Fairgrounds in Quarryville, PA. Last year was our first year in this new location and we were thrilled with the number of attendees and community involvement! This year we are expanding Saturday’s auctions, making this a true two-day fun-filled family event. The fine Art Auction will be held entirely on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. featuring local artist Glenn Blue’s signed and numbered print, “Remembering Nickel Mines”. The Plant Auction will also be held on Saturday and Monday, along with an expanded food selection.

Please continue to support us by coming out to the Auction on Saturday, September 2 and Monday, September 4, at the Solanco Fairgrounds. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for updates and check www.LaborDayAuction.org for the schedule and Auction information. Download the Labor Day Auction app as well for up-to-the-minute notifications!

We look forward to seeing you at the Auction!
