Nativity Scenes / Creches Needed! Please consider loaning your family crèche (3 dimensional, any style/type, or hanging nativity pictures) for our Nativity Exhibit on Friday, November 25 and Saturday, November 26. You will be able to pick them up anytime from November 27 on so you will have them back for your Advent and Christmas decorating. We carefully record each set and keep them under lock and key—we know how precious

they are to you. You may bring them to Sandi’s office any week day or on Sundays and Thursday evenings.

All scenes need to be in no later then Sunday November 20th.

Nativity Weekend Volunteers Needed!

• Exhibit hosts: serve cider, welcome guests and provide ‘gentle’ security

• Exhibit set-up and decorating (Thursday Nov 24 or Friday the 25th day time)

• Christmas Café: prep on Friday daytime or serving and cleaning on Friday evening or Saturday

• Outside Décor: light placement and set-up

• Kids’ cookie decorating table and kids “Please Touch” room

• Distributing posters around the community

Sign-up at the Nativity Display table on Sunday mornings or contact Sandi Parker ([email protected])

If you have brought a scene before, please attach the registration sheet and carefully check to make sure the number of pieces in your crèche set is still the same. For scenes that haven not been displayed before, please complete a registration form (available from Sandi or in the Church Office)

Sock Appeal for First United Highlands Local Connections

Committee is again asking for your support in helping us reach our target of providing 1000 pairs of men’s and women’s socks by mid-November for the program at First United Church in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. Each year we have exceeded our target.

You can help by contributing men’s or women’s socks – any colour, or by donating money towards the purchase of packages of sport socks. Contribution cheques should be made out to HIGHLANDS UNITED CHURCH and note SOCK APPEAL in the memo line. Your donation will be included for tax purposes with your annual statement. A member of the Local Connections Committee will be at the Action Table this Sunday to receive and record your contribution. Thanks for considering this appeal.

Sincere thanks to all who have so generously supported this appeal. 600 pairs of socks were delivered to First United this week. More will be delivered next month. The need is ongoing.

Requesting your Help for Hasna

Hasna Mohamed (our previously sponsored refugee) has now been here over one year and loves her new Canadian life and friends at Highlands. She has a full time job at Fishworks Restaurant on Lonsdale and continues English language education (also on Lonsdale). Hasna is now looking for a larger living space and would like your help. Do you, or someone you know, have shared accommodation or a small suite which could be rented at a reasonable rate? This would preferably have some cooking facilities, rent in range of $600/mo and be within walking distance of a bus route connecting to Lonsdale in North Vancouver.

If you have a place in your home or know of a rental possibility please contact Peter Ackhurst at [email protected] or 604-926- 3235. Thank you from Highlands Refugee Committee

Community Events

In Memoriam It is with sadness that we announce the passing of

Helen Mary Woodman. Helen was a long time member of Highlands and passed away peacefully on October 30, 2016

surrounded by family in her room at Capilano Long Term Care.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, November 10th at 1:30pm at Highlands.

A Message from First United Church in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside: CURRENT NEEDS:

TOOTHPASTE AND RAIN PONCHO’S - our most urgent need from the Reception hub is still for these items. Please contact Heidi Morgan at [email protected] or 604-681-8365 x104 if you can help!

Did you Know?

A lot of our community members are excluded from regular conversation that the rest of society enjoys. It might be harder for them say, to strike up a conversation on the bus because of barriers like mental health, addictions or hygiene. When they come to us, our staff and amazing volunteers really listen and give them a basic gift of sincere interest in who they are and where they have been. It is the little things (that aren’t so little).
