Several neighbors in the HPWBANA held “block parties” tocelebrate Neighborhood Night Out (NNO) onTuesday, October7. Many people spent the evening outside getting to know theirneighbors and promoting safety and crime prevention. Austincommunitiesparticipatedon thisdate insteadof thenationaldateinAugusttoallowneighborstogatherincoolertemperaturesinthehopesof increasingparticipation. Basedonthefollowingreportsfromourneighbors,itdidjustthat!
THEDEADENDGANGWehadafunNNOatthe“deadend”between3608ArrowheadDr&5410WesternHillsDr.Wecollectedemailsandothercontactinformation for 21 families in our neighborhood. We had no specific themeotherthangetoutinthestreetandmeetyourneighbors.Thiswas our first annual event and everyone agreed we should do it moreoften.Everyoneseemedsoappreciativeoftheeffort.
WESTFIELDDRIVEWestfield drive celebrated its 18th year celebrating NNO! We had 27 people plus 4 children & 2 new babies. Fromtheseupdates,itappearsthateveryonehadagreattime.Hereis looking forward to another great NNO in 2009!

While many of us knew David only through his neighborhoodassociation activities, his professional life was noteworthy. Hewas selected by U.S. Federal Judge Barefoot Sanders to be theFederalCourtMonitorinafamousclassactionlawsuit(R.A.J.vs.TDMHMR).Thelawsuitsought to improvelivingconditionsandtreatment for patients inTexas’ eight state psychiatric hospitals.David’sworkover16yearsledtothesuccessfulresolutionofthiscomplexcase,earninghimtherespectofbothsides.Thecasecreatednewproceduresandstandardsforevaluatingthequalityofcareandsafetyofpsychiatricpatients,andalsoledtoacontinuousqualityimprovementprogram.
This pivotal lawsuit ended in October 1997 but its effect is still felt today.
