Research profile Key personnel Core expertise Unique infrastructure Contact Projects The research group of High Temperature Processes and Industrial Ecology aims to gain scientific insights in the phenomena occurring during high temperature metallurgical processing in order to support process development and technological innovations. The mission is to shape the future society towards sustainable materials production and use, through innovative research in high temperature processes and beneficial use of secondary resources. Abdul Khaliq and 18 PhD students The expertise of the research group of High Temperature Processes and Industrial Ecology is structured in two subdomains: • the Pyro subgroup aims to develop more efficient and more sustainable extraction and refining processes and to provide insight in the phenomena occurring during high temperature processing. The core competences in this subgroup are slag engineering, gas/metal/slag interaction, vessel integrity, plasma metallurgy, metal recovery/recycling and metal quality; • the SREMat subgroup aims to conceive and develop innovative processes to transform industrial wastes and by-products into engineered materials. The research is focused in 5 research areas: ceramics, inorganic polymers, process engineering, cementitious binders and responsive materials. • Variety of furnaces for pyrometallurgical experiments • Confocal scanning laser microscopy for the in-situ observation of high-temperature phenomena • Advanced analytical techniques, e.g., FEG-EPMA-WDS • SlagLab: integrated lab for valorisation of secondary resources (milling, mixing, shaping, curing and property testing) • Software for thermodynamic modelling: FactSage (ChemApp), HSC, Thermo-Calc, Pandat • CFD and FEM packages: Fluent, COMSOL • In-house codes for reactor modelling Dept.
