North West Bay Ships Pty Ltd was formedin 2000 with the aim of developing modernhigh-speed marine transport solutions. In2001 the company launched its first vessel, a55 m trimaran fast ferry, closely followed bya 33 m catamaran ferry.The company, whichspecialises in high quality aluminium ships,offers other fast ferry designs including lowwash river ferries.
In 2003 the Government of Bermudaplaced an order for two 23 m foil-assistedsemi-planing ferries capable of servingany existing dock in Bermuda and therebyopening up new destinations.

NQEA ceased operations in October 2005after 60 years of business.
The company started services in 1948from the residence of its founder with astaff of three, the principal activity being theoperation of general engineering agencies,leading to general engineering manufacture.In 1964 it entered the shipbuilding industrywith the construction of dumb barges. Thiswas followed by work on many types ofvessels, including landing barges, workboats and patrol vessels. In 1977 NQEA wasthe successful tenderer for 14 Fremantleclass 42 m patrol craft for the AustralianNavy, the first having been built by BrookeMarine, UK.
Approximately 220 craft of various typeshave been built to date including 46 for theAustralian Department of Defence.
Throughout the 1980s, NQEA built largenumbers of high-speed ferry craft for theinternational market-place as well as somespecial purpose vessels. Search and rescuevessels, luxury motor yachts, dredge and

The unit has always specialised in smallfast vessels, with towing tank testing of high-speed motor yachts, patrol craft and pilotboats forming a significant proportion of thework in its early years. Test techniques havedeveloped to keep pace with the demandsof industry, and specialised equipment hasbeen designed to address the particular
requirements of catamarans, Swaths anddynamically supported craft.
With the importance of sea-keeping inhigh-speed craft design, much of the unit’swork now includes assessment of motionsand accelerations. These can be predictedusing the Wolfson Unit’s own computersoftware or measured in the towing tank.The unit has considerable experience inthe measurement of motions at full scale,and has developed an acceleration meterfor permanent installation on high-speedcraft to monitor motions with regard topassenger comfort, crew performance, orstructural limitations. For trial measurementsthe Wolfson Unit has a range of portablePC-based trials data acquisition systemstailored for routine acceptance trials, and
instrumentation packages to cater forspecialised requirements.
In the field of model testing the Unit hasaccess to high-speed towing tanks, withcarriage speeds up to 15 m/s, for resistance,sea-keepingandrelatedtesting,andtwolargeaeronautical wind tunnels for measurementof aerodynamic forces and flow studies forfunnel and superstructure designs. Radio-controlled models may be used in the studyof manoeuvring or sea-keeping, and avariety of sheltered inland and coastal sitesare available locally, in addition to controlled
sea-keeping basins. The same facilities andexpertise are employed by sailing yachtdesigners, and theWolfson Unit’s capabilitieswere demonstrated in 1995 and 2000 whenthe New Zealand yachts, which were testedin an extensive towing tank and wind tunnelprogramme at the Wolfson Unit, won theAmerica’s Cup.
All computer software developed by theunit is offered for sale and by bureau service.Programs include a comprehensive suite ofdesign software for hydrostatics, stability and
damage, a power prediction and propellerdesign suite, lines generation and fairing,sea-keeping, manoeuvring, and trials dataacquisition. A recent addition to the rangeis an onboard loading program approvedfor use on passenger vessels by the UKMarine Safety Agency.
