Gakko CampsPeer-to-Peer Learning
A core principle of Gakko Learning is that education is best when it happens as a mutual exchange on an equal plane. Instead of the standard teacher-student dynamic, Gakko Camps are based on a peer-to-peer learning environment:
Sempai 先輩/sem’paı/ n.
1. People who were born before you2. The college students and young professionals who create and facilitate each camp.
Every summer, 45 kohai arrive at camps that have been designed uniquely for them. For two/three weeks, on location at a beautiful site, kohai engage in rigorous workshops, hands-on projects, and collaborations across disciplines. In a diverse community of friends and mentors, through meaningful international dialogue, kohai build and take ownership over an "undiscovered country"— a vibrant camp community that has never existed before.
Sempai are individuals who demonstrate rigor in their respective fields and generosity towards others. Each team of 8-10 sempai represent a variety of disciplines and renowned institutions such as Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, and Sciences Po. They collaborate to design and facilitate a unique learning experience—including workshops, projects, and an immersive narrative—and serve camp as thoughtful mentors for the diverse community of kohai.
Kohai 後輩/ko’haı/ n.
1. People who were born after you2. The high school students who attend the camps, searching for “something more” in their education.

The Kohai Experience
The MissionEvery camp is a new experiment.
At a moment of increasing isolationism, exceptionalism, and disenchantment in education, the camp project transforms the way we learn, live, and love in community with one another.
Immersive & Interdisciplinary EducationFrom architecture to philosophy, magic to graphic design, music to computer science, kohai dive into workshop experiences designed by the sempai team as “investigations” rather than “classes” and leave newly inspired to pursue their own academic, artistic, and personal inquiries.
Together we create “kikkake” — the spark for new perspectives, connections, and ideas — at the intersection of learning and personal development.
Global MentorshipEvery kohai has a mentor-mentee relationship with a sempai that continues beyond camp. Grounded in the nightly “family group” meeting with 4-6 kohai, sempai help kohai navigate through the many choices they have to make as high school students from applying to colleges or taking a gap year to following a particular interest and establishing a practice.
Gakko’s alumni community includes more than 400 students and professionals from over 70 nations. Friendships and collaborations continue well beyond the time we share at camp.

Each Gakko Camp is an experiment, unique to the place and community of sempai and kohai who attend.
In 2016, one team of sempai designed camp around the structure of Joseph Campbell’s “Hero’s Journey.” Each day was a question. In week one, kohai were introduced to new ideas and skills; in week two, the roles were reversed and the kohai were tasked with their own acts of creation and education.
