PRINCIPAL’S PERSONAL MESSAGE

Corrimal High School has been a hive of activity again over the past three weeks with lots of activities taking place. I would like to start by congratulating all of our Year 12 students for completing the recent HSC exams - your behaviour was exemplary. This is a very significant time for our Year 12 students as it is the last formal exams that the students will sit at school, and depending on their future pathway, may be the last time that they engage in formal education. I hope that all of you receive the results that reflect the effort that you put into all of your studies. For the students that are moving into the workforce, good luck to you all. I hope that you find an occupation that makes you happy. Remember that the future is not set for any of you. Congratulations to all of the students who have received early entry into University. This is an outstanding achievement and you all should be very proud of yourself. For those who are still waiting on their results to find out if they were successful in getting into University, I hope that the results are favourable for you. It was nice to see all of our Year 12 students celebrating at the Year 12 Formal last week. A strong turn out from the teaching and support staff also helped to send these students out on a real high. Well done to Mr Tier and Mrs Foots for their work as Year Advisors. The past two weeks has also seen Transition events taking place for our incoming 2020 Year 7 cohort. Students have been actively involved in Peer Support activities as well as High School familiarisation activities where they have started the process of meeting and making new friends, meeting their new teachers, learning how to read a timetable and the myriad of other new experiences that they will be undertaking. All students involved have indicated that they have thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thank you to our Transition team and to all of the staff and students who have run activities for the incoming Year 7 students.

TEACHING FOR ENGAGEMENT, OPPORTUNITY AND SUCCESS

There have been a few new additions to Corrimal High School recently. As part of a Special Education innovation grant, the school has recently purchased two Alpacas as part of an Alpaca intervention program. Our Special Education students are working closely with Mr Brown and Mr Laidler to learn how to best care for the Alpacas, training them to be able to walk on a bridle with a view to potentially showing them. Well done to the staff for this new initiative.

We have also recently completed work on an extension to the school Agriculture Farm. This extension on Pioneer Road, provides an additional 2000 sq. metres of paddock space for Ag, enabling the staff to effectively rotate animals through the paddocks in order to sustain them while teaching the students more relevant skills with farms. This week has also seen Corrimal High School take possession of two 25 seat Mitsubishi Rosa Buses. These vehicles will provide greater flexibility for our school and students in the provision of extracurricular events. This will also enable us to moderate more effectively the costs associated with transport to and from different events. The school already has 10 staff with their bus licences, with a view to training more staff, thereby further enhancing our ability to provide opportunities outside the classroom for students.

TEACHING FOR ENGAGEMENT, OPPORTUNITY AND SUCCESS

As we move into Week 7 of Term 4, it is important that students maintain their positive approach to their schooling. There is still an expectation that students will arrive at school and in class on time and prepared to learn. This means that students also need to ensure that they are attending school with the appropriate school bag containing their books, pencil cases, lunches and whatever else is required for a successful day at school. Recently, there has been an increase in some students attending school with a small satchel bag which cannot fit a single book, pencil case, or any food in it. I ask that you please support the school by reinforcing with your child, the importance of being prepared for learning and bringing the appropriate equipment. Your support is greatly appreciated. Stay tuned for the End of Term newsletter where I will let you know about more exciting developments happening for the students at Corrimal High School. Regards, Paul Roger - Principal

TRANSITION

Across November 12, November 19 and December 3, Corrimal High School will be hosting our new 2020 Year 7 students. Across the days, leaders in Year 10 undergoing training in the peer support program have been running sessions to support students to get to know one another, learn about their new school and all the day to day organisation of high school. The Year 10 students have been extremely helpful in providing guidance to these younger peers and will continue to do so in 2020 with the Peer Support program and transition camp.

The beginnings of the Corrimal High School Yarning Circle are underway with the sandstone blocks placed in to position. The KLC will be looking to incorporate learning across a range of classrooms and faculties this term and in to 2020.

We hope to have an excellent community cultural space.

WELLBEING

Positive Reward Scheme At Wednesday’s assembly, we had 3 new winners of our Corrimal High Award Tokens (CHATS) lucky draw. These were: Jasmine Hall (Year 7), Michayla Dean (Year 7) and Sean Lynn (Year 8). These students had a number of CHATS in the draw as they have been recognised as upholding the values important to our school. Congratulations to these students who are able to choose a gift card for themselves – very handy as we approach Christmas time. A reminder that Thursday 12 December is our Jamberoo Reward excursion. The 40 students with the most CHATS will be rewarded with an invitation to attend this excursion for free. Keep displaying RESPECT, being RESPONSIBLE and acting with SAFETY in order to be in the running for this excursion. Late Arrivals Please remember that school commences at 8:35 each morning. Our school expectation is that students are here on time and ready to commence their classes. We are working with students and parents and carers to ensure that students are able to fulfil their obligation of being punctual to school. The International Day For The Elimination Of Violence Against Women November 25 Corrimal High supports this global movement and has done for the past few years. This globally recognised day coincides with the White Ribbon campaign to raise awareness, provide support and education and to prevent violence against women. This violence manifests itself in physical, sexual and psychological forms and does not discriminate in terms of race, social status or culture. We recognise, of course, that gender-based violence can happen to anyone, anywhere, some women and girls are still particularly vulnerable. As the Australian White Ribbon organisation has closed, we thought it a perfect opportunity to make our own mark on this day. We have invited roll call classes to discuss this issue and to develop their own SLOGAN and OATH which will be used at our assembly in Week 7. Please remember, there are a number of support staff at school (such as Counsellors, Year advisers, DPs and classroom teachers) if students require assistance or need to speak to someone about any of these issues.

EXCELLENCE IN VET I had the privilege of attending the workplace learning awards on Monday night along with Rhyz Presser, his mum and grandmother, where Rhyz received a Certificate of Excellence for Construction and the award for Student of the Year - Students with Special Educational Needs. What a great achievement for him and his mum on the night. Great effort Rhyz. All the best in your future endeavours.

To infinity and beyond.

LEADERSHIP

On Wednesday November 13 several Year 9 Technology students took charge of several learning programs designed to get younger students from Corrimal Public School to think critically and creatively. The four sessions required leaders to run the activities as if they were a teacher. Tarnni Foster and Jasper Hayman on DNA extraction, Justin Berrell on Robotics, Zac Rzemenski and Aaron Ross on programming, and Madeleine Devitt on human coding. The individuals were exceptional on the day as both leaders and representative on their school. Thank you very much to Corrimal Public School for allowing these students the chance to participate in such an amazing program.
