GENERALINFORMATION

ACADEMICCREDITMid-Pacificwillgrantcreditforanycourseinwhichastudentreceivesapassinggrade.Studentswhoreceiveagradebelow“C-”inacoursemayreceivearecommendationfromtheteachertorepeat thatcourse.Studentsrepeatingacoursewillnotgetcredit twice for thesamecourse.Generally,astudentwhoreceivesagradebelow“C-”inacoursethatispartofasequence(e.g.,MathematicsandWorldLanguage)maynotbeallowedtotakethesubsequentcourseinthesequencewithoutsomemakeuporotherremedialwork.

Nocreditisgivenforayearcoursedroppedatanytimeduringtheyear.Generally,transferstudentsreceivecredittowardgraduationforcoursestakenatotherschoolsifitisrecommendedbythedeanandapprovedbytheprincipal,andifacomparablecourseisofferedatMid-Pacific.

Creditforayearlongcourseisbasedonbothsemesters’work.Ifastudentreceivesafailinggradeforeitherofthetwosemestersofayear-longcourse,creditwillbeawardedonlyiftheaveragedpercentageforbothsemestersis60%orhigher.

Astudentwhowishestoearncreditorhigherplacementbytakingcoursesduringthesummerorbytakingonline,college,orcoursesfromother schools should receive prior approval from his/her dean. In departmentswhere courses are sequential (e.g., Mathematics,WorldLanguage), a student seekinghigherplacement as a result of summerwork completed at a school other thanMid-Pacificwill usuallyberequiredtosuccessfullycompleteadepartmentalexaminationinordertoreceivehigherplacementthefollowingschoolyear.MINIMUMCOURSELOAD

1. Ninthgradestudentsarerequiredtotakesevencourseseachsemester.2. Tenthgradestudentsarerequiredtotakeaminimumofsixgradedcourseseachsemester.3. Eleventhand twelfthgradestudentsarerequired to takeaminimumof fivegradedcourseseachsemester, to include fourcore

academiccourses(LanguageArts,WorldLanguages,SocialStudies,Science,Mathematics,andTechnology).COURSESELECTIONSInselectingandregistering forcourses, thestudentshouldseek theadviceofhis/herdeanand teachers,anddiscuss theselectionswithhis/herparents.Courseselectionsarereviewedandapprovedbythegradeleveldean.Somecoursesaresubjecttofieldtrip,materialand/orexaminationfees.Inmostcases,thestudent’sfirstchoiceinacourseselectionwillbemet.However,ifaschedulingconflictoccursorifthereisinsufficientenrollmentintheclassselected,thestudentwillbeplacedinanalternateselection.COURSESELECTIONSMADEDURINGTHEREGISTRATIONPROCESSAREFINAL.SCHEDULECHANGESIntherarecasethataschedulechangeshouldbenecessary, it isregardedasanexceptiontotherulethatcourseselectionsmadeduringregistrationarefinal.Exceptionsmaybemadeunderanyofthefollowingconditions: 1.Schedulingconflictoccurs. 2.Summerschoolcoursestaken. 3.Changeisinitiatedandstronglyrecommendedbythestudent’sdean. 4.Minimumcourseloadnotmet.Reasonsforrequestingacoursechange,suchasteacherorperiodpreference,disinterestinthecourse,etc.,willnotbeconsideredsufficientcausetoinitiateaschedulechange.

● Astudentmayaddacourseuptoandincludingthe10thschooldayoftheprevailingsemester.● Astudentmaydropacourse(withnodesignationmadeonthestudent’stranscript)uptoandincludingthe10thschooldayoftheprevailingsemester.Theminimumcourseloadrequirementisapplicable.

● Dropping a course after the 10th school day is considered awithdrawal. Itwill be noted on the student’s transcript as “WD” butwithout indicatingthestudent’sgradeforthecourseatthetimeofthewithdrawal. Ifastudentwithdrawsfromayearlongcourseafter the first semester, the first semestergradewill standon the recordsandwillbe included in the student’sCGPA(cumulativegradepointaverage).

● Nostudentmaywithdraw fromacourseafter the11thweekof theprevailingsemesterof thecourse. Theminimumcourse loadrequirementisapplicable.

AUDITSTATUSInsomecases,aDeanmaychangethegradingstatusofacourseto“Audit,”whereinthestudentmustcompleteallassignedworkbutthestudentdoesnotreceiveagradeorcredit.Onceastudentisplacedinacourseonauditstatus,thatstudentmaynotrevertbacktotakingthecourseforalettergradeforthedurationofthecourse.Thispolicyisapplicabletobothsemesterandyearcourses(i.e.,astudentwillnotreceivealettergradeforthesecondsemesterofayearcourseifthecoursewastakenonanauditbasisduringthefirstsemester).CITIZENSHIP/CITIZENSHIPGRADEMid-Pacific encourages and recognizes good citizenship and character. The citizenship gradewill reflect the student’s adherence to theschool’sstandardsofconduct.Everystudentwillbegineachquarterwithan“A”gradeincitizenship.Thegraderecordedattheendofeachquarterwillbebasedonthenumberofdemerits,ifany,accruedbythestudent.Thesemestergradewillbeanaverageofthetwoquarters.The citizenship gradewill be averaged into the student’s Grade Point Average (GPA), andwill be reflected on the student’s permanenttranscriptas“Citizenship.”Thestudentwillhavetheopportunitytoworkoffuptofive(5)demeritsaquarter.Thestudentshouldmeetwithhis/herdeanonallquestionsrelatingtothecitizenshipgrade.

GRADINGPOLICYMid-Pacificisacollegepreparatoryschool;therefore,eachstudentisexpectedtoputforthhis/hermaximumeffortandtakefulladvantageofopportunities for intellectual,moral,andphysicalgrowth.Gradesareameansbywhichstudentscanmeasure theirprogressandgainconfidenceintheirabilities.Grades also provide parents, teachers, colleges, and employers with information regarding the performance of Mid-Pacific students.Teachersaregivenconsiderablefreedominarrivingatgrades,buttheymustmaintaincarefulrecordsandclearlydefineforthestudentsthemethodusedtocalculategrades.Gradeguidelines:

A representsasuperiorlevelofperformanceandmasteryofthesubject,frequentlyexhibitingtheabilitytouseknowledgeandskillseffectively.

B representsahighqualityofworkandmasteryof the subject, reflectingaboveaverageperformancewith theability toanalyzeandapplyprinciples.

C indicates that all work has been done in an acceptable and adequate manner and that the student has achieved areasonableunderstandingofthecontentofthecourse.

D representsbelow-averageperformance and indicates that the student’s performance is below the school’s standardofachievementoreffort.

F representsalevelofperformancesofarbelowthatwhichisexpectedofMid-Pacificstudentsthatitcannotbeconsideredadequateforthegrantingofacredit.

REPORTCARDSGradesareissuedattheconclusionofeachquarterandarepostedinNetClassroom.Reportcardsaremailedtoparentsand/orguardiansattheendofeachsemester.PROGRESSREPORTSAll teachers’progressreportsonNetClassroomare livedocuments. Inaddition, interimsare issueddirectly todeans twiceaquarter forthosestudentswhohaveagradeof“C-”orlower.Studentswhoareat“C-”orbelowinanycoursewillberequiredtomeetwiththeteacherduringtutorialhourstoreceiveextrahelp.COMPUTATIONOFTHEGRADEPOINTAVERAGE(GPA)Eachstudent’sgradepointaverage(GPA)willbedeterminedusingthefollowingscale: A+ =4.333points 98-100 C =2.000points 73-76 A =4.000points 93-97 C- =1.667points 70-72 A- =3.667points 90-92 D+ =l.333points 67-69 B+ =3.333points 87-89 D =l.000points 63-66 B =3.000points 83-86 D- =0.667points 60-62 B- =2.667points 80-82 F =0.000points 59andbelow C+ =2.333points 77-79

IncomputingtheGPA,thepointsearnedinallcourseswillbeweightedequally.TheGPAiscomputedbyaddingthepointsearnedineachcourseandthendividingbythenumberofcourses.Students enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP), and/or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses receive higher grade point equivalents,whichreflectthegreaterdifficultyoftheseclasses.Forexample,agradeof“A”willbeequivalentto5.000,“B”equivalentto4.000,etc.Thenormalgradingscaleprovidesthatthe“A” isequivalenttoa4.000,“B”equivalentto3.000,etc.Thesehighergradepointequivalentsareused to compute the student’s GPA and class rank, and in the determination of Honor Roll and President’s List students. Studentswhoreceivea“D”oran“F”intheAPorIBcoursewillnotreceiveanadditionalpoint.

Shouldastudentearnagradebelowa“C”inanAP,orIBcourse,thatstudentmaybetransferredtotheregularsectionofthatsubjectuponconsultationwiththeteacher,dean,andIBcoordinator.CreditsearnedforcoursestakenatothersecondaryinstitutionswillbeacceptedprovidedtheyaresimilartocoursesofferedatMid-Pacific.However,gradesforthosecourseswillnotbeusedinthecomputationofthestudent’scumulativegradepointaverage(CGPA).CUMULATIVEGRADEPOINTAVERAGEA student’s cumulative grade point average (CGPA) is computed each semester beginningwith the grades earned from a course in thesummer session immediately preceding grade 7. CGPAs are calculated for grades 7 and 8, and for grades 9 through 12. (The CGPA isdeterminedbydividingthepointsforgradesearnedinallcoursesbythetotalnumberofcoursestaken.)Gradesforcoursestakenduringthegrades 7 and 8 at Mid-Pacific which satisfy Mid-Pacific’s graduation requirements (e.g., first or second level world language, Algebra I,Geometry)willbeincludedinthestudent'sCGPAforgrades9through12andwillbeshownonthestudent'stranscript.WITHDRAWALSIfastudentwithdrawsfromaone-yearcourseafterthefirstsemester,theweightingofthefirstsemestergradewillcontinuetobeapartoftheCGPA. The“WD”designationwillbenotedonthesecondsemesterof thecourseandbe includedonthe transcript. Nostudentmaywithdraw from a course after the eleventh week of the prevailing semester of the course. The minimum course load requirement isapplicable.

1 HonorRollforthreequarters;2 President’sListfortwoquarters;3 President’sListforonequarterandtheHonorRollforonequarter.

HONORGRADUATEToearnrecognitionasanhonorgraduate,agraduatingseniormusthaveacumulativegradepointaverage(9th-12thgradeGPA)of3.700attheendofthefirstsemesterofthesenioryear.HonorgraduatesmusthavecompletedthreeconsecutivesemestersofacademicworkatMid-Pacificbytheendofthefirstsemesterofthesenioryear.

ACADEMICPROGRESSPOLICY● Astudentwhosegradepointaverage(GPA)islessthan2.000orwhohastwofailinggradeswillbeplacedinAcademicMonitoring

statusattheendofthequarter.● AstudentwhoseGPAislessthan2.000orwhohastwofailinggradesattheendofthesemestermaybedismissedfromMid-Pacific.● AllstudentswhoareplacedonAcademicMonitoringwillreceiveinterimreportsonmyPueoandwillberequiredtoattend

remedialsessionswiththeirinstructor(s)duringofficehours,asprescribedbytheirinstructor(s)ordean.Thesesessionstakeprecedenceoveranyco-curricularactivity.

● Studentswhoareinacademicdifficultymayalsoberequiredtoattendastudyhallduringanunassignedclassperiod.

ACADEMICSUPPORTSYSTEMSTUTORIALDesignatedtutorialsessionsareavailableforstudentstoseeteachersforacademicassistance.Studentsmayconsultwithseveralteachersforafewminuteseachorspendtheentiretimewithoneteacher.Studentsmaychoosetomeetteachersduringtutorialormayberequiredto attend by their deans or teachers. Itwill be the student’s responsibility to attend these sessions. Required tutorial sessionswill takeprecedenceoverotherco-curricularactivities.PEERTUTORINGPROGRAMThePeerTutoringProgram involvesqualified studentswhoare recommendedby their teachersand/ordean to serveasvolunteerpeertutors to other studentswhomayneedhelpwith their academicwork.Acceptance into theprogramas apeer tutorwill dependon thestudent’sacademicrecordandonpersonalcharacteristicsthatindicatesuitabilityfortheposition,suchasresponsibility,maturity,patience,andknowledgeinthesubjectarea.Peertutoringwillgenerallybeonaone-to-onebasis,orinsmallgroupsessions.Tutoringsessionswillbeheldoncampusduringtheschoolday.Apeer tutorwillberequired tosubmitprogressreportswith thestudent’s teachers, thepeer tutoringcoordinator,andappropriategradeleveldean.FREEPERIODStudentswhoelecttotakefewerthansevenclassespersemesterwillhavefreeperiod(s)duringtheschooldayandmaychoosetospendthattimeinseriousstudy.The libraryorWeinbergtechplaza isavailable forthatpurposeaswellas forresearchandquietgroupstudy.Studentsareexpectedtomanagethemselvesduringfreeperiods,Studentswhochoosenottorespecttheexistingquietatmosphereofstudyspacesoncampuswillbeaskedtoleave.

BLENDEDCOURSESAblendedcourseisacombinationofatraditionalface-to-faceclassandanonlineclass.Studentsmeetfacetofacewithateacheraminimumof50%ofthescheduledtimeperweekandworkindependentlyorcollaborativelyonlinefortherestofthetime.Eventhoughstudentsmeetlessfrequentlywiththeirteacherfacetoface,theamountofcontentcoveredinthecourseisthesameasinatraditionalclass.Thisrequiresgoodtimemanagement fromstudents.Teacherswillholdofficehoursduring theirblendedcourse time,sostudentswillbeable tomeetwiththemifneeded.Studentsareexpectedtoinformtheirteacherwheretheyplantoworkduringtheirnon-meetingperiods,sotheycanbelocatedinanemergency.Studentsmustbeoncampusduringtheblendedclasstime.Studentswhofallbelowa“C”averagewillbeexpectedtobepresent intheclassroomallclassperiodsuntil theirworkshowssufficientprogress.Studentsmusthaveapproval fromtheirgradeleveldeanandthedepartmenttoenrollinablendedcourse.

CERTIFICATEPROGRAMS

Mid-Pacific’s curriculum is designed to engage students as they become actively involved in their learning. To this end,Mid-Pacific hasseveral certificate programs, providing a more connected curriculum experience in which students can focus on their passions. Byincorporatingopportunitiesforvoiceandchoice,studentsdevelopessentiallifelongskillsastheypursuetheirinterestsandpassions.

PLANNINGFORTHEHIGHSCHOOLIBDIPLOMA/APPROGRAMSAdmission intoeither IBorAPclasses isbasedona combinationof factors including teacher recommendation, standardized test scores,gradesandstudentmotivation.Incoming11thgradestudentsnewtoMid-Pacificmayalsoapplyfortheprogram.StudentstransferringtoMid-PacificwillneedtosubmitTeacherRecommendationformsfromtheircurrentteachersoflanguageartsandliterature,socialstudies,science,andmathematics.Tobestprepareforthisprogram,studentsshould:

● Havebeguntheirsecondlanguageingrade8.StudentstakingJapanesemustbeinlevel2ingrade9.ItispreferredbutnotrequiredthatFrenchandSpanishstudentsstarttheirsecondlanguageingrade8.

● Acceleratemathcourses if theexpectation is to reachcalculus ingrade12.Thiswillnotbenecessary for studentswithamoremultidisciplinary/artfocus.

● Learntomanagetimewellandmeetdeadlines.ADVANCEDPLACEMENTPROGRAMTheAdvancedPlacementProgramwasdevelopedbytheEducationalTestingServiceofPrincetontoprovideanationallyrespectedvenuewhere U.S. students do college level work while still in high school. Enrollment in an AP course requires faculty approval. The IB courses are designed to be part of a rigorous total liberal arts package including experiential aswell as learned knowledge. Theframework is international in composition of student and teacher populationworldwide; in the content of the curriculum that presentslearning and views from the diverse cultural, social, political, historic, and aesthetic traditions; and in the use of the IB Diploma as aninternationalpassporttohighereducationincountriesaroundtheworld.Currently,theIBDiplomaprogramisin~2500schoolslocatedin147countriesandinnearlyallofthestatesintheU.S.

1. All students enrolled in AP and/or IB courses are required to take and make a serious attempt at the appropriate exam(s)administeredeachMayinordertopasstheclass.Failuretodosowillaffectthefinalgrade.

Participation in thisprogrammaynotbecountedasoneof theminimumnumberofclassesstudentsarerequiredto takeeachsemesterTheTeacherAssistant (TA)programprovides interested studentswith aunique learning experience andoffers them theopportunity todevelopleadershipskills,servetheschool,helptheirfellowstudents,andworkcloselywithindividualteachersinspecificsubjectareas.TheTA duties include: tutoring students individually and/or in small groups, organizing and preparing class materials, leading and/orparticipating in groupwork, and researchingmaterials to augment the curriculum. Students serving as a TA are expected tomodel thehigheststandardsofbehavioranddecorum,contributingtoapositivelearningenvironmentforall.Studentsintheprogramreceivecreditfor theirwork andwill be graded on a credit/no credit basis.. ATHLETICS

Mid-Pacific offers an extensive athletic program. Beyond fielding a large number of sports teams of its own, Mid-Pacific, as one of thememberschools inthePAC-5program,provides itsstudentstheopportunitytoparticipate insportssuchasfootballandwaterpolo.FormoreinformationonsportsatMid-Pacific,consulttheStudent/ParentHandbook,visitthesportssectionofthewebsiteatwww.midpac.eduorinquireattheMid-PacificAthleticOffice,[email protected]: Physical Education credit will be given for participation in a sport in grades 9-12 providing the sport displays aerobic fitness,flexibility,muscularstrengthandmuscularenduranceinordertoenhanceperformanceinthatsport.Theabovefourcharacteristicsshouldoccurthreetofourtimesperweekthroughouttheseason.Studentswillreceive½creditforPEafterthecompletionoftwofullseasonsofanILH-sanctionedsport(includesPAC-5teams)whileattendingMid-Pacific.Creditwillbegivenonlyforseasonscompletedduringgrades9-12.Studentsmustearnatleast½creditoftheirPEgraduationrequirementsthroughcompletionofaPEcourse.
