FROM THE HEADMASTERDear Parents/Carers,

The Year 12 Graduation functions went extremely well and the Year 12 class deserve congratulations for the manner in which they conducted themselves during that period. They are a credit to the College and their families.

During the first week of the holidays a number of Year 12 students attended our study retreat at Kincumber. Students being able to apply themselves consistently during that week were able to continue with that application during Week 2 of the holidays thus ensuring a thorough preparation for their HSC which begins next week. Besides this I know that other students have been working hard at home and at local libraries. Some teachers also offered extra tutorials at the College. As far as I can judge students seemed to be making good use of the preparation time. So at this stage we can just hope and pray that they do well in the exams which are now underway.

Our Gifted and Talented programmes have fired up again for the term with students involved in mentoring at St Mary’s Primary, CREST Science competition and the Mathematics Problem Solving workshops.

I have been in discussion with the Catholic Education Office about our College plan and the increased numbers of enrolments. We are moving into a Master Planning Phase of discussion in which a complete audit of our facilities will take place. From this our future requirements will be listed. I will keep you posted on this.

I have encouraged the students to be focused in their study during this term because summer weather can give the impression that holidays are imminent and lead to some laziness in attitude.

The results at the end of the year are important for the students so that they can move into next year with a sense of having a capacity to make a difference in their own learning by applying themselves consistently and well.

You would be aware that we now have significant enrolment pressures at Marist College North Shore. In this climate it is essential that all current parents who have younger children they desire to come to Marist College North Shore complete the enrolment processes in sync with other applicants into year levels. The enrolments for 2014 and 2013 have basically been closed off at the Year 7 level. Future applications to those year levels will eventuate in a waitlisting that often leaves people anxious for months. So my advice is for all families to complete the paperwork on time to prevent this waitlist eventuality.

I also encourage all parents to subscribe to this publication online. I do not really trust that enough of these paper documents arrive home and into the hands of parents. I line this with that we are also attempting to place electronic copies of documents sent home via students on our website. So a regular visit to the website is essential for all parents.

Thank you and God bless.

Br Peter Corr

FROM THE DEPUTY HEADMASTERTerm 4 Assessments

Welcome back to the new term and I hope that everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing break. Once again we have a busy term with Year 12 students starting their HSC exams in Week 2 and Year 11 beginning their HSC studies with HSC assessment tasks occurring this term. All other year groups will have important assessment tasks and tests throughout the term, which they should be preparing for now. Below are the dates for each year group and when their assessment week will occur:

Year 10: Week 5Year 9: Week 7Year 7/8: Week 8

Further important dates for the next two weeks include:

Week 2 • Monday 15 October: HSC exams begin.• Wednesday 17 October, 7.30pm: Year 7 (2013) Parent Information Evening• Friday 19 October, 10.45am: Chanel House Fundraiser: Pink Ribbon Day

Week 3 • Wednesday 24 October, 7pm: Year 11 (2012) Prizegiving EveningThis is a compulsory event for all Year 11 students.

Lateness

I was concerned at the end of Term 3 at the increasing number of students who were late to school.Students are given three unexplained lates for when unseen circumstances do occur. Punctuality is important as it reflects planning, organisation and a sense of being settled. Students should plan at being at school before the 8:35am bell. I ask parents to assist with ensuring that your sons have a routine that allows them to be punctual. Students who are continuously late will be issued Friday or Saturday detentions.

Mr David ForresterDeputy Headmaster

TEACHING AND LEARNINGYear Twelve

Congratulations to the graduating class of 2012 and best of luck with your upcoming HSC Exams that commence Monday 15 October. The College community will be thinking of you all during this final stage of your schooling. Remember to stick to your study plan over the next month and be sure to include some breaks and down time into your routine. Special congratulations to the first in course and commitment award winners who were acknowledged at the end of the Graduation Mass last term.

Year Eleven

The Year 11 Academic Awards and HSC Information Evening will be take place on Wednesday 24 October at 7pm in the LaValla Hall. Student reports, Assessment Booklets and other information will be distributed on the night as we prepare our HSC Class of 2013 for the year ahead and outline the College and Board of Studies expectations.

Year Ten

All Year 10 students continuing their studies at the College will be given a printout this Friday of the subjects they have been allocated for Year 11 2013, along with a note from me explaining the process that was followed in this allocation. Students who wereimpacted by any timetabling constraints were informed of any issues last term, but this will now give all students and their parents an opportunity to discuss any concerns with me regarding their son’s choices. Any concerned student and/or parent can either book a ten minute face-to-face interview with me or reserve a time for a ten minute phone call by phoning Mrs Joyce Kelly at the College. A copy of the note being sent home will also be available on the College website.

Year 12 Graduation Celebrations

On 29th September, we celebrated the Year 12 Graduation here at the College. It was a hugely joyous occasion as we took time out to farewell the fine young men who make up the Class of 2012. We gathered together as a College to celebrate and pray with our year 12 students and their families to wish them on their way.

Our day began with a presentation of Year 12 students who were piped into the assembly area. It then continued with a Ceremony of Light where the students were offered the light of wisdom, love, knowledge and faith, which they were encouraged to take with them on their journey. This ceremony was carried out by some of our Year 7 students, College Staff, Year 12 parents and Br. Peter and Br. Michael, who represented the presence of faith in our community. The assembly followed on to recognise the gifts that Year 12 bring to the College. Many students were presented with some significant awards recognising their commitment to their studies and to the College during their time here.

Later in the evening we gathered at St. Marys Church to celebrate our final Graduation Mass. Students were led into the Church by some fine piping by Alex Coyle in Year 10 and as we gathered around the Lord’s table for the last time as Year 12, 2012. We gave thanks for all the Year 12 students and their achievements at MCNS. The ceremony was very moving owing largely to the many members of the community who worked together to ensure its success. I would like to thank Mr Rod Herbert and all his musicians; choir, band members and instrumentalists, who spent hours in preparation for our liturgy.

I would like to thank the teachers who helped out with various parts of the Mass, especially Mr John Collins for his continued work as our College Acolyte throughout the year.

A special thanks must be extended to James Turner and Tom Hanaee who are instrumental in all our AV and digital presentations here at the College. The boys were joined by Alex Casanova (Class of 2011) who helped out with the Graduation; we thank Alex for his continued commitment to MCNS.

Each Year 12 graduand was presented with a crucifix at our celebration. As the crucifix was placed around each gentleman’s neck they were asked to Go in Peace and take Christ with them. It is hoped that in the years to come these Year 12 students will continue to explore their faith journey and remember always that they are part of the extended Marist Family, constantly in the heart of Marcellin Champagnat and so too in our hearts here at Marist College North Shore. We wish the Year 12 every success in whatever way their paths lead them in the future. Good luck and farewell!

We hope you enjoyed your holiday reading. It’s a wonderful opportunity to catch up on those books just waiting for the right time. Now that you are back, it’s time to return those books or renew them at the library.

We have an exciting selection of new books coming up this term, but there is not much time, so take opportunity of every moment to read. Is there anything better in life? I have yet to find anything better and we have some keen readers who would agree.

Happy Reading!

GRADUATIONYear 12 Graduation Ball 2012

The Graduation Ball for the Class of 2012 was held at the Four Seasons HotelSydney and it was the twenty-third time we have had the event at that venue. The hotel and its staff have over the years been consistently excellent atproviding a wonderful evening for our students, parents, staff and guests andthis year’s was no exception.

The five star hotel is an excellent setting for thiscelebration of the end of six years of secondary school and the beginning of newlives for our young men. Having finished in St Mary’s Church, we drove to thehotel, which is only a few minutes away, to be greeted with pre-dinner drinksin the private Foyer and then on into the Grand Ballroom for dinner. The chef atthe Four Seasons excelled himself again with wonderful food including a Main ofslow cooked Rib Eye steak and a delicious chocolate dessert selection.

Mr David Forrester was the MC for the night and we were entertained withwonderful speeches by William Spence, Annie Lucas, Danny & DanielFlynn and Brother Peter. One of the highlights of the evening was the “Mother and Son Waltz,”a chance for our young men to have a short dance with their mothers - a bit of a “thank you”for all those years of consistent help and support.

The speeches were kept to a minimum and once finished the dancing startedwith “Slide McBride” keeping the room on its feet until midnight when parents andteachers left for home and the Class of 2012 went off to their various venues.

This is a wonderful way to finish the year and to farewell our special youngMarist men. We wish them the very best in their futures and we look forward tocelebrating with the Class of 2013.

Will also competed at the Interschool Snowsport Champions for MCNS in the Alpine, Ski Cross, Moguls and Cross-Country disciplines. Will made it through to State for Moguls and reached Nationals for his Cross-Country skiing but sadly wasn’t able to make the podium due to a 12-person pile up during the race!

We wish Will all the best for his 2013 season!
