HIGH FREQUENCY WORD ASSESSMENT This assessment will help you determine the extent of a student’s knowledge of high frequency words, as well as particular words he/she knows. It also can help you make a decision about what book level to begin instruction with. YOU WILL NEED: Level A-M high frequency word lists Level A-M high frequency word assessment- Individual Record Form ASSESSMENT: 1 Administer the assessment individually. 2 Begin with a leveled list you believe will be easy for students. 3 Work with one list at a time. 4 Ask the student to read the list of words you have selected. Students should be able to read the list quickly. Do not spend too much time on any one word. If a student is unable to read the word, tell him/her to skip it and go on. 5 Record the student’s correct responses, as well as substitutions, on the individual record form. SCORING: If a student reads fairly quickly, 7 or more of the 10 words correctly, go on to the next list. If a student is unable to read 7 or more of the 10 words, additional information will be gained by using the Running Record Assessment at the same level.
