Students will be picked up and signed Dear parents and caregivers, Senior School Ball Thank you to all senior students who attended this year’s ball event. It was so encouraging to observe our students conduct themselves in such a mature way and contribute to a highly successful night. My special thanks to Ms Marsick and the Year 13 student committee. What some people don’t see are the long hours of careful planning that goes on behind the scenes to make the night spectacular. An excellent night and our students looked amazing! Student Success and Achievement Student progress reports have been redesigned with the clear intention to make them more useful to students and parents as indicators of progress. You will notice a number of really positive changes including ‘feedback and feedforward’ comments along with student ownership of learning assessment data. I’m sure you’ll find them much more ‘user-friendly’ and we welcome any post review comments. Congratulations to our Smokefree Rockquest band ‘Minimal Silence’ who won the regional competition for best band in Auckland. To members, Mark, Logan and Sabastian, we wish you all the very best for the national finals. There are many other examples throughout the newsletter which you’ll be impressed with. New Trustees Welcome to our new trustees and congratulations on their election success. Stewardship of our College is an important task and we have been very fortunate to have many highly skilled professional members guide our direction as a school organisation. I acknowledge former trustees who have retired at the last election and thank them for their support and commitment to the College. Property Development In Term 4, we will begin the start of our school refurbishment plan. This involves upgrading all classrooms so that we achieve an optimal physical learning environment. Some of our classrooms over the years have been neglected and this will be an opportunity to ‘spruce’ up learning spaces and make them more attractive. Also planned are improvements to the theatre, gym and outdoor areas. Sir Peter Blake Leadership Week Each year, our Houses and students support Leadership Week. Celebrating the legacy of Sir Peter Blake our students are proud to be involved and planned a number of events throughout the week. As part of this celebration of leadership, we also acknowledged our teachers as leaders of a profession. A student led design project of a powerful educational quote ‘I touch the future. I teach.’ was unveiled to all staff at a special assembly. This graphic will be placed in the main school reception area honouring our staff as leaders. End of term 2 I wish everyone a restful break away. School resumes on Monday 25 July. Careers Evening
The classrooms in H block were full of students
and parents gathering information at the recent
Careers Evening. With over 40 representatives
from industry and tertiary institutes, there was
something of interest for everyone. The Careers
Evening is a great way for students to find out
more about their future career options by asking
questions from those in the know.
A lot of work goes in to organising and co-
ordinating this event and we thank our Careers department team for ensuring our
students have the guidance and information they need—thanks to Ms van Daatselaar,
Mrs Batt, Mrs Simpson and Mrs Hewett.
To get the Teacher Only Day off to a good start, a
Pink Ribbon Breakfast was held in the school café.
Over $800 was raised as staff tucked into French
toast, home made croissants, fruit, cereal and more.
A big thanks to organisers Mrs Poole, Ms Marsick
and Mrs Roberts. Thanks too go to the hospitality
students who came in extra early on their day off to
prepare and serve the yummy breakfast.

Auckland Writer’s Festival
This year our group of avid writers and readers spent two days at the Auckland
Writers Festival being inspired by writers such as John Boyne (The Boy in the
Striped Pyjamas), Michael Grant (the Gone series), and New Zealand author
Ella West. Attending these sessions offers a fascinating insight to different
aspects of writing with some authors talking about how their process works and
others offering some practical advice on how to write. Some of our students
took advantage of the book signing opportunity to meet their favourite authors.
The students heard from poets and playwrights as well as novelists, and an
entertaining Shakespeare scholar who encouraged the audience to lose their
‘Shakesfear’ and embrace the language of the Bard.
Thank you to Mrs King for organising this trip and ensuring our students don’t
miss out on this popular event. They have been inspired not only in their
reading but also their writing pursuits.
40 Hour Famine
The World Vision 40 Hour Famine once again brought students together to have
some fun and take aim at their teachers. The ‘Sponge a Teacher’ school event,
combined with a lunchtime sausage sizzle, added $200 to the funds raised by the
students and staff who took on the 40 Hour Famine. Well done to the staff who
volunteered to get a dunking.
Over 5 million children have been affected by
the conflict in Syria, many of those are
homeless, living in refugee camps or on the move seeking
asylum in other countries. Some of our students taking
part in the 40 Hour Famine chose to take on the ‘One
Weekend, One Backpack’ challenge, where for the entire
weekend they used only items they could pack in a
backpack, much as a refugee would have to do. World
Vision will use the funds raised from the 40 Hour Famine
to create Child Friendly Spaces in camps, which will offer
a space for children to play and learn. A child friendly space display was set up at the school
for students to see how their support will be helping to make a difference.
YouDance Festival
This annual secondary school festival celebrating dance ran from the 30
th of May to the 1
st of June this year with over 150 students
participating. Howick College has been a long-time contributor to YouDance and this year the dance department decided to challenge themselves and enter two ensemble pieces.
A group of 23 students from Year 10 to 13 performed at the Raye Freedman Arts Centre at Epsom Girls Grammar School. “Forced Winds”, their first work, was a collaborative piece created by guest choreographer from the University of Auckland, Xavier Breed, Level
3 Dance students and Head of Dance, Ms Santana Schmidt. The piece was based on the events that occurred during the time of the Dawn Raids.
The second piece entered was entitled “Wherefore Art Thou?” and was inspired by William Shakespeare’s Act 2, Scene 2 of Romeo and Juliet; the famous balcony scene. This piece was performed by The Company Class - “In Collaboration”, a dance extension group.
The students performed over and beyond expected standards and received a lot of praise and positive feedback from other participating schools, teachers and dance
practitioners. Congratulations to Ms Schmidt and all the Howick College dancers who took part in Youdance 2016.

Cultural Week
The Culture Club hosted a range of lunchtime activities during the first ever
Culture Week to celebrate the diverse cultures represented at the school.
Each day featured different events such as a dress parade, a presentation
from the French trip group, dance performances, quizzes and craft work-
shops.
The week culminated in a feast of international food with the Ingham House
International Food Festival. Well done to the members of the Culture Club
for arranging this inspiring and fun week.
International Students
Rippa Rugby - A team of our students signed up for a Rippa Rugby
tournament this term. They spent a few weeks learning the game and training
with Waisake Sotutu in preparation for the day of games with other local
International Students. Held at Sacred Heart College, the event proved a huge
success and our students are keen to continue playing. You can check out
some of the fun in the video on YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?
v=RLUDdsfj95I. Look out for our team in Howick College red and black.
Mid-Winter Christmas - We hosted a Mid-Winter Christmas for our students
and their host families in June giving
them a taste of a Kiwi Christmas experience. It was lovely to see so many of
our students and homestays come along. Well done to the students who
contributed entertainment by performing songs and dances from their
homelands.
Homestay Families - next term we
will be hosting more short stay groups
and also welcoming long term
students. Hosting a student is a
special experience that often leads to
lifetime friendships. If you would like to open your home to one of our students
and welcome them to your family, either for a short or long stay, please contact
our homestay co-ordinators Vanessa or Tania for more information. Email:
