Sclairpipe® high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe represents the latestadvances in both material and manufacturing techniques. Since 1968,Sclairpipe has been proven in a wide range of municipal and industrialpiping applications. It has been used extensively in the municipal marketfor gravity sewers, sewage forcemains, and pressure water systems. KWHPipe has special expertise in marine installations of Sclairpipe, includingriver and lake crossings; and river, lake and deep ocean intakes andoutfalls.

Lighter. Stronger. Chemical Resistant.Sclairpipe is a tough, lightweight, solid wall pipe with a smooth internalsurface. Available in various diameters from 3/4" to 63" it can handleinternal pressures of up to 300psi. It is a well suited alternative to copper,PVC, ductile iron and concrete pipe in a variety of different applications.

Sclairpipe weighs approximately 1/10 that of a similar sized concrete pipe.Handling requires a minimum of heavy equipment and Sclairpipe caneasily be assembled on ice or through wet marshy areas. It will notcorrode, tuberculate or support biological growth, making it the materialof choice in harsh environments. Sclairpipe is inert to salt water and tochemicals likely to be present in sanitary sewage effluent.

Sclairpipe has a smooth ID and maintains its flow capability over time -Hazen Williams C Factor remains 150, even after years of use.

Easier to Transport and Install.Leak Proof.Sclairpipe is much easier to handle and install than heavier, rigid concretepipe, offering potential cost savings during the construction process. It isstructurally designed to withstand impact, especially in cold weatherinstallations when other pipes are prone to cracks and breaks. Sclairpipewill float even when full of water. For marine applications long lengths ofpipe can be assembled on shore and then floated into position.

Thermal butt fusion provides an economical and fast method of deliveringa complete, long, continuous length of pipe. Thermal fusion eliminatespotential leak points every 8-20 feet commonly found with gasketed (orbell or spigot) pipe materials. The fused joints provide a continuous leakproof system that eliminates the risk of joint leakage due to groundshifting. Fused joints are fully restrained and as such may reduce oreliminate the need for expensive thrust blocks.

With Sclairpipe infiltration and exfiltration problems are eliminated.

Cost Effective. Permanent.Sclairpipe offers distinct advantages. It can be installed on a curve to aradius as small as 25 times the nominal pipe diameter to eliminate manyfittings required for directional changes in piping systems made from othermaterials. In addition, the flexibility of Sclairpipe allows it to adapt touneven ground, unconsolidated river bottoms and excavated underwatertrenches without the need for expensive foundations or minor degreeelbows. It is well suited for dynamic soils and areas prone to earthquake.

Sclairpipe is cost effective in both the short and long term. The fact that itis lightweight makes it easier to transport and install. The fact that it is leakproof and fatigue resistant means years of maintenance free use. ThePlastics Pipe Institute estimates the service life for HDPE pipe toconservatively be 50-100 years.

Since its development in 1955, large diameter HDPE pipe has beensuccessfully used in many installations worldwide. In North America,Sclairpipe high density polyethylene pipe was first introduced in 1968.Since then it has been installed for river, lake and salt water crossings,municipal and industrial fresh and salt water intakes and effluent outfalls.Sclairpipe has also been used extensively for pipeline repair andrehabilitation.

IrrigationSclairpipe is a cost effective solution for irrigation and agricultural drainageapplications such as river and canal diversion, agricultural irrigation systemsand pipelines, and water conservation. It is lightweight, flexible and leakproof, resistant to corrosion and salt water, and joints can be heat-fused onsite for ease of installation. A Sclairpipe irrigation system will withstand thetest of time.

Heating & CoolingSclairpipe has proven to be a strong, leak proof and chemically inert solutionfor district cooling applications including dual-purpose projects providingcooling and potable water. It can be assembled on shore in a continuousflexible length, floated on the water’s surface and then sunk by a controlledprocess. The pipe can also be manufactured in specific lengths and connectedon site by flanges with the aid of marine divers. Sclairpipe pipe’s resistance toboth corrosion and zebra mussel fouling makes it an ideal solution.

MiningSclairpipe solid wall HDPE pipe is commonly used in mining applications fortailing disposal water management including: river water diversion,reclamation lines, culvert, sewer and sub-drainage systems and conveyingpipe. It is lightweight, flexible, durable and abrasion resistant. It is virtuallyleak proof, and can withstand corrosive chemicals, acids or salts commonlyfound in mines. Choose thesize that’sright for you

Sclairpipe is available in standard Dimensional Ratio’s (DR’s), in sizes rangingfrom 3/4” to 63” in diameter. The Dimensional Ratio relates the minimumwall thickness of the pipe to its outside diameter, and is important to definethe pressure rating of a particular pipe. Coiled pipe diameters range from3/4" and 1" Copper Tube Size (CTS) and 3/4" to 3" nominal outsidediameters in Iron Pipe Sizes (IPS). The maximum continuous operatingpressure stated is based on a PE3408/3608 (Per ASTM D3350)1 material forthe indicated DR and is based on water service at 73°F.1Sclairpipe is also available from higher density bi-modal resins, having enhanced performance characteristics.

The standard stocked length of Sclairpipe pipe is 50 feet, in sizes above 2”in diameter with longer lengths available on request. Coiled pipe isstocked in diameters up to 3" and is available in 250 and 500 foot lengths.Larger pipe sizes and coil lengths are available on special request.

Extensive R&D in the early 1960’s led us to produce 16" diameterpolyethylene pipe at a time when many considered large diameterpolyethylene pipes a technical impossibility. Today KWH Pipe produces solidwall Sclairpipe in sizes up to 63".

All KWH Pipe products are manufactured from special, high strength resinswith complete quality control maintained from raw material to finished pipeproduct. KWH Pipe was the first North American manufacturer ofpolyethylene pipe and fittings to have its Quality Management Systemregistered to the ISO 9001:2000 level.

Our strict manufacturing specifications are verified daily, using precisedimensional controls and accelerated long term hydrostatic testing. Acontinuous quality control process assures you of long-term pipeperformance. We certify that the pipe resin used to extrude Sclairpipe has aminimum cell classification of PE 345464C when classified in accordancewith ASTM D3350. Sclairpipe is classified as a PE 3408 material using PPI’s(Plastic Pipe Institute) method of determining and validating the Long-TermHydrostatic Stress (LTHS) of polyethylene pipe.

Innovativejoiningmethods andequipment

Sclairpipe piping systems can be assembled by heat fusion (butt,electrofusion, socket and saddle fusion), flanged connections,compression couplings and various mechanical couplings. The superiorperformance of Sclairpipe results from the combination of pipe and fittingsdesigned to work together as a complete system. A full range of pressurerated fittings is available to suit any application.

The most popular method of joining Sclairpipe is thermal butt fusion. Thisfast and economical technique permits the quick assembly of longcontinuous lengths and the joining of fittings to the pipe. The fused jointsare as reliable and strong as the pipe itself, fully restrained, providingcontinuous leak proof systems.

Our skilled fusion specialists are available to assist in the most efficientinstallation of your Sclairpipe system. Their experience in on-the-jobhandling, installation and set-up of polyethylene pipe and their pre-jobplanning capabilities ensures you of a superior installation. Fabricatedfittingscompleteany system

KWH Pipe believes that every element of your piping system should becarefully designed to work together in a cost-effective manner. We providea wide range of complimentary fittings, proven over years of service, tomeet the requirements of just about any piping system.

Fabricated fittings for use in pressure service are manufactured in the samediameters as Sclairpipe but with heavier walls than are used in the pipingsystem. This results in a fitting with a pressure rating which is greater thanor equal to the pipe itself. Unless specifically stated otherwise, theadditional wall thickness is on the ID. The butt weld ends of the fittings arecounter bored to meet the wall thickness of the mating pipe. KWH Piperecommends that fittings be ordered by EDR (Equivalent DimensionalRatio). The pressure rating of the EDR fittings is the same as thatassociated with the DR of the matching pipe.

All fabricated fittings can be supplied with either flanged ends and/or plainends for field butt fusion to the piping system. FM approved fittings arealso available.

Mitered Tees & CrossesKWH Pipe produces fully pressure rated tees up to 48" in outsidediameter. These mitered tees and crosses intended for pressure serviceare fabricated from pipe that is 2 standard (SDR) DR’s heavier than theadjoining pipe. The result is a fitting with the same pressure rating asthe main line pipe. The ends of the fitting are counter bored to matchthe wall thickness of the pipe to which it is being connected. Miteredtees and crosses are available in IPS and DIPS sizes.

ElbowsElbows for Sclairpipe systems are designed for pressure service and arefabricated from pipe typically 1 standard (SDR) DR heavier than theadjoining pipe. The result is a fitting with the same pressure rating asthe main line pipe. The ends of the fitting are counter bored to matchthe wall thickness of the pipe to which it is being connected. Elbowsavailable in IPS and DIPS sizes.

Concentric ReducersKWH Pipe also offers concentric reducers that are designed to have apressure rating equal to a polyethylene pipe with the same DR. Wealso offer a compact style for significant cost savings. The same highquality resin and extrusion processes used in the manufacture ofSclairpipe is used to produce these reducers.

LateralsKWH Pipe produces 45° and 60° laterals up to 42" in outsidediameter. These laterals are fabricated from pipe with a heavier wallthan in the matching pipe. The ends of the fitting are counter boredto match the wall thickness of the pipe to which it is being connected.Laterals are available in IPS and DIPS sizes.

Sidewall TeesAs an alternative to conventional reducing tees, our engineeredsidewall tees are designed to provide 90° branch reductions off themainline pipe. Sidewall tees are available in IPS and DIPS sizes. See thefittings section on our website for size ranges and details,www.kwhpipe.ca.

Injection Molded FittingsKWH Pipe offers a full line of molded fittings, in all commonconfigurations. The resins used to produce these components meetthe same standards and specifications as is used to produce Sclairpipeand conventional fabricated fittings. Molded fittings are available withsocket fusion or butt fusion ends.

Slip-On Metal FlangesStock flanges are available and made from ductile iron. KWH Pipe canalso supply flanges from other materials for specific applications. Themetal flanges are drilled to ANSI 16.1/16.47/16.5, Class 125/150 boltcircles and AWWA C207. Flanges can be supplied with corrosionresistant coatings if required.

Polyethylene Stub-Ends & FlangeAdaptersTo join Sclairpipe to other piping materials, ancillary equipment, or tospecial fittings, a mechanical fitting is usually required. For these typesof connections, a flange assembly is the recommended method. Thisassembly consists of a slip-on metal flange and a polyethylene flangeadapter or stub-end. The stub-end or flange adapters carry the samepressure rating as the pipe and are butt fused to the pipe end. Thestub-end/flange adapter must be the same DR rating as the pipe towhich it is joined.

MATERIALThe pipe shall be made from polyethylene resin compound with a minimum cell classification of PE 345464C for PE 3408 materials inaccordance with ASTM D3350. This material shall have a Long Term Hydrostatic Strength of 1600 psi when tested and analyzed by ASTMD2837, and shall be a Plastic Pipe Institute (PPI) TR4 listed compound.The raw material shall contain a minimum of 2%, well dispersed, carbon black. Additives, which can be conclusively proven not to bedetrimental to the pipe may also be used, provided that the pipe produced meets the requirements of this standard.The pipe shall contain no recycled compound except that generated in the manufacturer’s own plant from resin of the same specificationand from the same raw material supplier.Compliance with the requirements of this paragraph shall be certified in writing by the pipe supplier, upon request.Manufacture’s Quality System shall be certified by an appropriate independent body to meet the requirements of the ISO 9001:2000 QualityManagement Program.

PIPE DESIGNThe pipe shall be designed in accordance with the relationships of the ISO-modified formula (see ASTM F714).

MARKINGThe following shall be continuously indent printed on the pipe or spaced at intervals not exceeding 5 feet:

Name and/or trademark of the pipe manufacturer.Nominal pipe size.Dimension ratio.The letters PE followed by the polyethylene grade per ASTM D3350, followed by the Hydrostatic Design basis in 100’s of psi e.g. PE 3408.Manufacturing Standard Reference e.g. ASTM F 714A production code from which the date and place of manufacture can be determined.

JOINING METHODSWhenever possible, polyethylene pipe should be joined by the method of thermal butt fusion as outlined in ASTM D2657, Heat JoiningPolyolefin Pipe and Fittings. Butt fusion joining of pipe and fittings shall be performed in accordance with the procedures recommeneded bythe manufacturer. The temperature of the heater plate should be between 400°F and 450°F. Follow the recommendations of ASTM D2657regarding interfacial pressures for pipe wall thickness less than or equal to 1.5”. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations regardinginterfacial pressures for pipe walls thicker than 1.5”.

Polyethylene pipe may be connected to fittings or other piping systems by means of a flanged assembly consisting of a polyethylene flangeadaptor or stub end, and a metal backup ring that has a bolting pattern meeting the dimensional requirements of Class 150, ANSIB16.1/B16.5 in sizes up through 24”, and meeting Class 150 Series A, ANSI B16.47 or AWWA C207 Class B for larger sizes. Follow themanufacturer’s recommendations regarding bolting techniques and the use of gaskets.

Pipe or fittings may be joined by butt fusion only by technicians who have been trained and qualified in the use of the equipment.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTSThe pipe manufacturer shall provide, upon request, an outline of quality control procedures performed on polyethylene system components.

2 Weholite

Weholite® pipe is large diameter, profile wall pipe made from high-densitypolyethylene (HDPE) resin. Designed for gravity and low-pressure applications,Weholite’s raw material properties have been combined with patentedstructural wall technology to create a lightweight engineered pipe withsuperior loading capacity. It is used to convey liquids or air, under groundor above ground, in low-pressure applications.

Lighter. Stronger. Chemical Resistant.Weholite pipe is much lighter than similarly sized concrete pipe. Combinethis with longer manufacturing lengths and Weholite allows you toachieve savings in labour and equipment.

Weholite HDPE pipe will not corrode, tuberculate or support biologicalgrowth, making it the material of choice in harsh chemical environments.It is inert to salt water and the chemicals likely to be present in sanitarysewage effluent.

Like all HDPE pipe, Weholite has a smooth ID that maintains its flow capabilityover time. The low Manning’s roughness factor of 0.01 remains constant,even after years of use.

Easier to Transport. Easier to Install.Leak Proof.Weholite pipe is much easier to handle and install than heavier, rigidconcrete or metallic pipe. This means potential cost savings during theconstruction process. It is structurally designed to withstand an impact,especially in cold weather installations when other pipes are prone tocracks and breaks.

Weholite pipe is usually joined by a thermal fusion process (extrusionwelding) to form a joint that is as strong as the pipe itself. Extrusionwelding eliminates potential leak points every 8-20 feet commonly foundwith concrete, PVC and ductile iron pipe. Since fused joints are self-restraining, costly thrust restraints or thrust blocks may not required.

Extrusion welded Weholite pipe is leak proof. The properties of HDPE pipeand the thermal fusion method of joining produces a continuous pipeline,eliminating the risk of leakage caused by shifting unstable soils. Acontinuous Weholite pipeline eliminates the joint infiltration and exfiltrationproblems experienced with other pipe materials.

Cost Effective. Permanent.Weholite pipe offers distinct chemical and physical advantages over concreteor iron pipe. It can be bent to a radius 200 times the nominal pipe diameterto eliminate many fittings required for directional changes in piping systemsmade from other materials. In addition, the flexibility of Weholite pipemakes it well suited for dynamic soils and areas prone to earthquakes.

Weholite is cost effective in both the short and long term. The fact thatit is lightweight makes it easier to transport and install. Since Weholite pipe is lightweight and flexible, it is easy to transport andinstall. Small misalignments of pipeline can be accommodated by bendingthe pipe itself. Long lengths of pipe can be ordered to reduce the numberof joints and the associated time and expense of installation. Wehoseal Joint WrapWehoseal Joint Wrap is commonly used to connect Weholite pipe to otherpiping materials or when Weholite is used to reline other pipe materials. It ismade from a shrinkable cross-linked polyethylene material which conforms tothe diameter of the pipe when heated. Sleeves can be supplied withadditional fiberglass reinforcement for challenging conditions. Installation isperformed in the field using a propane torch and a hand roller.

Simplified Material HandlingLight weight and long lengths reduce the material handling requirementsat construction and storage sites. In addition, Weholite has high axial (orbeam) stiffness that reduces the number of support points required to liftthese long lengths of pipe. The durable PE material helps ensure thatproduct damage due to handling is minimized.

Thermal Fusion/Extrusion WeldingThermally fused extrusion welded joints are the recommended joiningmethod. The connection can be made using simple hand-held extrusionequipment. Specialized equipment is also available to join large diameterpipe on both the inner and outer surfaces from inside the pipe. This processenables the pipe to be connected at both the inner and outer pipe walls in asingle operation from within the pipe. Equipment can be leased from KWHPipe and operated by factory trained technicians to provide a leak-proof seal.

Thread-Loc JointThe unique Thread-Loc joint on KWH Pipe’s Weholite pipe allowsmunicipal maintenance crews or contractors to rehabilitate deterioratedculverts and sewers without excavation, at a fraction of the cost ofreplacement. A threaded connection gives a joint that resists infiltrationof normal silt and rainwater debris. The Thread-Loc connection is availableon sizes from 18” to 132”.Thread-Loc Joint not available in 48” and below in U.S.A.

Manhole InstallationWeholite manholes are designed in accordance with ASTM F1759. HDPEmanholes when used with HDPE piping produce a sewage system that iscompletely leak-free and is not subject to the corrosion experienced inmany sanitary sewage systems. Weholite manholes may be provided withcorrosion resistant OSHA ladders, and field cut to the required height.

Pipe InstallationThe bedding and backfill requirements for Weholite pipe are the same asthose for all plastic pipe. ASTM standard D2321 that applies to PE and PVCplastic pipe installation, is appropriate for describing the process forplacement of bedding, and backfill materials on a Weholite pipe installation.Where native materials are suitable, imported embedment materials maynot be required.

Grouting Reline PipeWeholite’s high axial stiffness and high resistance to the hydrostaticcollapse pressure caused by grouting, simplifies the installation andgrouting procedures when using this pipe to reline deteriorated highwayculvert pipe. Relining offers substantial savings over replacement ofdistressed pipe and avoids traffic disruption.
