The charitable environment is a very competitive one with large numbers of organizations canvassing support and vying for the same limited funds. How do we continue our work in this environment where every cause sounds more plausible than the other, without losing our motivation? At NID we believe that we can continue doing our work by focusing on the impact that we have through living our vision and mission. How do we define this impact? If we can change the life of one Deaf person, we made an impact on that individual’s life.

It is the responsibility of the board of directors and management to continuously reinvent the way we work in order to maximize our impact in terms of the effect of our efforts but also the number of individuals affected. In a fast-changing environment, we accept that continuous changes are required in order to stay relevant and optimize our impact.

In this annual report, we tell numerous life-changing stories; stories where the actions of our organization are having a powerful impact on the lives of our Deaf beneficiaries and benefi-ciaries with hearing loss. It is seeing this powerful impact on their lives that makes working at NID more than a job. Working here becomes a life-changing experience for every staff mem-ber. I am truly thankful for every staff member at NID for showing your heart in the work that you do and in making this powerful impact.

Our work cannot continue without our supporters. The people blessing us with their time, donations and prayers. Your contribution to NID is having a powerful impact in changing the lives of our beneficiaries.

We thank our Heavenly Father for blessing the NID. No organization can continue its work for 138 years through the effort of man alone. Therefore, we humbly recognize the powerful impact of God’s blessing on the NID. We do our work with the hope and belief that He will continue his work through our organization.

A LIFE CHANGED...Edward September was born hearing, but became deaf due to illness as a child. He was admitted to NID Elderly Care in July 2018. Initially, he adapted well and socialised with the other residents. About a month after his admission, he however developed medical problems such as dizziness and fatigue. His appetite began to decline and he preferred to stay in his room and sleep. He was constantly monitored by the caregivers, but later admitted to hospital. After discharge, he was however still interested in nothing. He just laid in his room all day and didn’t want to eat anything. Edward said he wants to die.

The staff of NID Elderly Care continued to provide medical assistance and emotional support. They decided to contact Edward’s family (whom he had no contact with over the past few years). The attempt was successful and he received a visit from his brother and then two of his sisters also came to visit. Other members of the family also started to visit regularly. The reunification was positive.

Edward began to feel much better. He recovered systematically and began to heal. Today, Edward eats the biggest plate of food and finds joy in every day. And he still laughs when he is told that at one time he did not want to eat anything. With love, compassion and a sincere caring heart, NID Elderly Care gave new meaning to an elderly Deaf person who had no passion for life anymore and reunited family ties.

NID Elderly Care (Shalom) celebrated their tenth birthday on 13 March 2019. Like Edward’s story, there are many other precious testimonies that speak of the life-changing impact that NID Elderly Care has had on the lives of our elderly Deaf residents over the past ten years.

They are at home and safe in a nurturing environment, can experience life’s joy by just being themselves, and they are cared for with love, care and compassion.

Shalom believes and trusts for many more years of service to the elderly Deaf and would like to thank all donors, friends and partners who are walking the journey with them.

A LIFE CHANGED...Charlton Adams was born in May 1985 and has been Deaf and suffers from Cerebral palsy (spastic quadriplegic) since birth. He was cared for by his mother until she passed away 14 years ago and then placed in the care of his sister and a private caregiver. However, they approached NID Adult Care (Lewensruimte) for the admission of Charlton, as there was a need for full-time supervision and to provide Charlton with the opportunity to participate in healthy social interaction. Charlton became part of our NID Care family in 2017.

From the beginning, Charlton shined at NID Adult Care. With his kindness and positive attitude, he quickly crept into the hearts of the staff and other residents. It’s so nice to see how he energetically enjoys whizzing around in his electric wheelchair.

Initially it was a learning process to interact with Charlton as the spasticity caused him not to be able to use his hands for Sign Language. He however quickly showed that he could draw whatever he wanted to communicate, and we were amazed at his drawing talent. In the therapeutic groups, Charlton now has the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities and to socialize with other Deaf people from his peer group. Charlton diligently participates in everything! He gets exercises from the biokineticist once a week and even swims with the help of a special floatation device. One of his favourite activities is dancing and it is always a joy to see him enjoy himself tremendously without any hesitation or shame.

NID Adult Care offers Charlton the opportunity and environment to freely live and be himself. Here, Charlton’s limitations do not determine his fate and he can live out his full humanity and talents. It is a life-changing process and it is a special privilege to be able to walk this journey with Charlton.

Like Charlton, every other resident at NID Adult Care is complete and worthy; a person in his or her own right and stands with pride in a meaningful place in the community - despite their disability and thanks to the positive impact that NID Care makes in their lives.

NID Training’s goal is to provide excellent deaf- accessible skills training to increase the employment of unemployed Deaf youth and to ensure equitable and fair employment opportunities for them. NID’s training programmes are in line with the National Skills Develop-ment Strategy (NSDS III) to align with the skills development priorities identified by the Depart-ment of Higher Education and Training. In doing so, NID provides relevant sector-based programmes that address scarce and critical skills as well as the needs of unemployed Deaf persons and per-sons entering the labour market for the first time.

During 2018, 1 014 students were trained in a variety of training programmes across the country and a 97% pass rate was achieved. These are dreams that have been realized and lives that have been irrevocably changed and improved. NID Training is proud and grateful for the difference we can make in their lives in terms of increasing career opportunities and successful job placements for the Deaf.

NID Training’s on-campus residential model will be adapted as from 2020 to make provision to serve more students through provincial training units. The on- campus residential model will continue until December 2019 and thereafter training will only be made available at a larger number of provincial train-ing units. Training programmes will be expanded to regions where there are sufficient training needs and funding in order to provide training to the Deaf and persons with hearing loss cost-effectively and with greater impact.

As part of the NID Business Development Program, NID operates seven business training units on campus in Worcester. The two main objectives of these units are to generate income and to serve as practical development and training facilities for Deaf students of NID Training as well as other individuals from the Deaf community. At the business training units, our students are exposed to the realities of a practical work environment to thoroughly prepare them for future employment in the open job market.

Due to restructuring of NID’s current training model and the on-campus residential training programmes which will be reduced in 2020, the NID Business Training Units were adapted accordingly. Students will in future receive their practical training from selected industry partners. In preparation thereof client services to the public were discontinued in 2019 at the following NID Business Training Units: Woodwork, Joinery, Upholstery, Beauty Salon, Nursery and Vegetable Processing. The Tea Garden and Laundry were not affected and their services to the public will continue.

NID Training programmes are offered at provincial training units in regions where there are sufficient training needs and funding to ultimately provide training to the Deaf and persons with hearing loss, cost-effectively and with greater impact. These units are beneficial in terms of greater reach, affordable deaf-accessible training and resources, and the notable greater difference it makes in the future and lives of our Deaf beneficiaries.

NID ISS focuses on delivering multi-disciplinary support services to persons with hearing loss. Through support, training, development and empowerment, we change the lives of the Deaf and persons with hearing loss.

DIGITAL INTERACTIVE STORY BOOKSThe critical period for language acquisition ends at puberty and the more acquisition is delayed, the worse the consequences become. 95% of Deaf children are born to hearing parents and these children do not have the benefit of natural and timely language acquisition. The parent and child bond is vital, but without language, this bond cannot be enhanced. Hence most hearing parents are faced with the heart-breaking decision; to place their chil-dren, at the tender age of three years, in residential schools for the Deaf.

NID ISS has developed digital interactive story books that will enable the parent to stimulate language acquisition while the student stays at the parental home for as long as possible. The parent has the opportunity to learn with the toddler, strengthening the parent-child bond and fostering the social-emotional wellbeing of the child. In addition, the child builds a SASL (South African Sign Language) vocabulary that provides an advantage when reaching school.

SASL CELEBRATION On 12 March 2019, NID in partnership with the CRL (Cultural, Religious and Linguistic) Rights Commission and supported by the UNESCO Information for All Programme (IFAP), hosted the ‘National Celebration of SA Sign Language as the recommended 12th official language in South Africa’. With National Minister of Higher Education and Training, Ms Naledi Pandor, and National Deputy Minister of Sport and Recreation, Mr Gert Oosthuizen, in attendance, SASL was placed in the spotlight it so rightly deserves.

In June 2017 the recommendation was made by Parliament’s constitutional review committee for official status to be given to SASL as the country’s 12th official language. The news was welcomed by Deaf people across the country, as the road to getting SASL recognised as an official language has been long and difficult. It is an historic event in South Africa and provides us with hope, that with successful implementation, Deaf people and persons with hearing loss will have equal access to societal and economic activities.

LEARNER’S LICENCE SUPPORTDeaf people experience major challenges when writing their learner’s license test. The average Deaf school leaver has the reading comprehension of a hearing child of eight years (DeafSA, 2009). With their limited opportunities to acquire Grade 12 and the challenge of an inaccessible learner licence test,

their access to gainful employment is hindered. For the most part the Deaf population finds itself at the lower end of the socio-economic scale, with a nearly 90% unemployment rate amongst Deaf adults.

Our answer to this predicament, is a learner’s licence prep course, entirely in SASL; including deaf-accessible resources. NID developed a learner licence test sample, where all the questions are presented in SASL to ensure Deaf accessibility. This test sample was presented to the Department of Transport and Public Works for their consideration. Deaf instructors guide the students every step of the way with mock tests and interactive training sessions.

“I went for my driver’s licence and passed. The woman at the traffic department told me in Sign Language that I passed. I was happy, shocked and proud that she spoke to me in SASL. I am thankful.” – Simon Ndaba (Deaf)

“South African Sign Language (SASL) is seen by many as a form of art and it is often forgotten that it is a language. Through this celebration, the emphasis was placed on SASL as a language in its own right, where Deaf role models presented the proceedings professionally. SASL deserves its place as the official 12th language of our country and this celebration clearly conveyed the message.” – Dirkie Ebersohn (Deaf)

One of the keys to any successful organisation is its people. Happy and motivated employees lead to improved work efficiency and productivity, which is crucial in bringing about the change we facilitate in the lives of our Deaf beneficiaries. A motivating and intellectually nurturing work environment is pivotal to having a loyal, productive and engaged workforce. In this regard, the NID Resources department places a high premium on the well-being of our 149 employees as they are an important asset to the organisation. The following initiatives are prioritised:

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENTWe strive to develop leaders who share enthusiasm, reflect the values of NID and provide a sense of purpose and direction on all levels of the organisation. Among other, the management team attended the Brightstar Life Skills Programme with the fo-cus on developing personal, relationship and leadership skills.

RECOGNITION OF EXCELLENCEOur deserving employees are recognised and acknowledged for exceptional performance and service. During the 2018 Annual General Meeting 16 long service awards were awarded to em-ployees for ten years and longer of uninterrupted service.

HEALTH AND SAFETYWe have an effective health and safety management system in place to ensure the continued health, safety and wellbeing of our staff.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE DEVELOPMENTWe encourage learning as a way of life and promote and invest in the skills and knowledge development of our employees. This is done through staff attendance at various training work-shops and weekly informative Knowledge for All sessions.

At NID we believe that a safe and neat environment contributes to happier employees, and consequently higher and effective productivity. Our beneficiaries are also entitled to the privilege of a clean, safe and happy home. It is therefore the focus of the NID Maintenance and Grounds team to ensure a favourable and supportive working environment through the maintenance of our grounds, buildings and equipment.

Visitors to NID are welcomed by a beautiful and neat campus that speaks of the pride and respect with which it is taken care of daily by the grounds team. A fresh coat of paint or the replacement of a light bulb by the maintenance team gives a new look to a group home or hostel.

These tasks may sound insignificant, but at NID it is part of our puzzle and helps shape the bigger picture in which we change the lives of the Deaf and persons with hearing loss.

We have the right people, with the right skills in the right positions. A diverse team working together as a unit. We work with integrity, respect and accountability. We are committed to the cause and together we empower and help change the lives of

the Deaf and persons with hearing loss.

Spiritual Ministry De La Bat School

National Institute for the Deaf ∙ Annual Report 2019National Institute for the Deaf ∙ Annual Report 201920 21

At the vibrant Deaf Family Church in Worcester and the De la Bat Congregation for the Deaf in Bellville, the Word is delivered to the Deaf in their own language. It is two spacious homes where all Deaf and hearing people are welcome, can feel at home and belong, regardless of background, culture or language.

The church buildings are designed in such a way that the Deaf can easily follow the services and visual aids complement speech reading, Sign Language and Deaf-Blind communication. Church activities keep old and young involved and encourage spiritual growth. Love, relationships, acceptance, patience and being of service is very important to us. Our care for each other comes to life here. Our essence is “We are God’s family and our language is love”.

The ministry of the two congregations not only extends to their local Deaf and community but has grown to much greater reach over the past year. The Deaf Family Church in Worcester’s services are accessible through live broadcasts over the internet. The De la Bat Congregation for the Deaf in Bellville also serves surrounding Deaf through monthly gatherings in Moorreesburg and Wellington. This way more people are reached and served.

The Lord has entrusted this Deaf Ministry to us to change the lives of the Deaf through his Word and Spirit and faithfully in his command.

De la Bat School prepares Deaf children and children with hearing loss, with knowledge, skills and values for full and rightful citizenship.

We have several focus areas for maximum development of each learner’s potential:

• Preschool- and school readiness programmes • Formal education from Pre-Grade R to 12 in accordance

to Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS)• The pillar system of character development • An extensive sports program for a balanced lifestyle• Career-oriented and Skills development courses• Support Services on campus: - health care - social services - psychological services - audiological services and speech therapy - occupational therapy - learning support• Nine hostels with 24-hour supervision • South African Sign Language as full-fledged home

language up to Grade 12• Cultural programs with participation in the Shakespeare Schools Festival• The use of the Red Star Process, resulting in faster progress in communication, reading

and writing skills

“Education is the key to success in life, and teachers make

a lasting impact in the livesof their students”.

It is with a big and thankful heart that NID Development looks back on a year of generous blessings and special relationships with donors, businesses, trusts and foundations, friends and partners - each of whom in their unique way filled our hearts with even more gratitude.

In a time of economic uncertainty, the faith and caring of our exceptional partners and friends has truly carried us as a team. Caring hearts inspired us to be courageous and in doing so we were able to realize extremely successful fundraising and marketing efforts. Miracles were once again believed in and memorable moments were experienced, thanks to precious relationships with our truly irreplaceable donors.

We also have immense gratitude towards our Deaf and persons with hearing loss who on a daily basis make us realize and live the valuable meaning of appreciation, gratitude and humility. It is an absolute blessing and privilege to be able to make a difference in their lives through the work we do and with the help of caring people who are willing to make an investment in their lives.

We salute our caring friends!
