    An update from our

    fearless leader

    Ed Heinlein

There are BIG GTGs, and there are Little ones. I had one of the latter here in San Jose lastmonth and am looking forward to the upcoming one later this month. Ill start with the Missouri

    one:GTG/Scholarship Presentation

Marilyn has published the schedule of events elsewhere, so just a few words about a couple ofthings.

First, we are gonna have a pretty fair turnout. Attendees will be from not only Missouri (all overthe state) but also from Colorado, Alabama, California (your scribe), Illinois, Oklahoma. Andmaybe Wisconsin. And, possibly, out of Africa (via Arizona). Additionally, who knows whowill attend our reception for other classes on Saturday afternoon?

So, if you are of a mind to do so, please come!

And one of the neatest events will be the awarding of our seventh (!) Scholarship. If you havent

been able to attend one of these ceremonies, it is worth being in the Brockman Lecture Hall justto see the expression on the young persons face when he or she walks into the Hall (not

knowing why) and is greeted by a standing ovation from the audience (which includes thewinners parents). It is a two-hankie event and, without a doubta HOOT! So, come on outand join the fun.

    My St. Patricks Day GTG

Judy (Yeaman) Hicks called from her winter home in Arizona a few days before St. Pattys dayand said she was going to be in San Jose on March 17. We met at a downtown restaurant andhad one heck of a visit. She told Vivian and me lots of stories, and I told all the lies I could think

of. Judy and I had corned beef, while Vivian, whose moms maiden name is Duffy, did not.Darn modern ladies!

Judy has made reservs to attend the GTG weekend and will be there if an impending familysituation allows. The good news is that Judy did not wear any green, so I got to pinch her, something Ive been wanting to do for 56 years! (OK, OK, just kidding.)

Looking forward to getting together at the GTG. Ed

Heres an example of the caliber of kids we have to choose from to receive our Class of 57

Coverdell Memorial Scholarship award. And, just so you can see how really tough the job

is for your Committee, we received 30 applications this year from students like this andhave to pick out only ONE from the group. What a challenge!

Some of you may have heard of Pat Metheny another LSHS kid that made it big time!

My sister and I used to babysit with Pat and his older brother, Mike. Never thought, at thetime, that Id be seeing him on national TV or buying his music CDs, but here he is. Pat

was featured on CBS News Sunday Morning on April 3rd

. You can go to his websitehttp://patmetheny.com/and watch if you missed it on TV. Hes quite a musician and well

worth your time to watch. From the home page on his website, click on Metheny Music Foundation and then on

History. This gives a wonderful history of the Metheny family and their Lees Summit

heritage, along with pictures many of which you will remember from back in our day.

You might also click on Awards from Pats home page you will be amazed at what

this small town L.S. kid has accomplished. Makes you proud to call him an LSHS Tiger!

By the way, he was also inducted into the LSHS Hall of Fame, 1998-1999, listed as . . .

Mr. Pat Matheny, Class of 1972

    Internationally known jazz musician and composer;

has won 16+ Grammy Awards and has been named Best Jazz Guitarist

    From Sharons Kitchen . . .

This morning while I was boiling some eggs to make deviled eggs, I looked out the window atthe daffodils and realized that Easter is rapidly approaching. For Easter dinner well probablyhave our usual ham and au-gratin potatoes. Fresh spinach salad would go well---and somethingreally delish for dessert. Although I think cheesecake is special anytime, chocolate (my favoritefood group) turns it into heaven. Happy Easter, friends. (Sharon)

    CHERRY-CHOCOLATE CHEESECAKEYou will need a 9-inch spring-form pan

1 cups finely crushed chocolate wafers

1/3 cup butter, melted3 8-oz pkg. cream cheese, softened1 1/3 cups sugar4 squares (4 oz) semisweet chocolate, melted and cooled2 Tbsp all-purpose flour1 tsp vanilla]4 eggs] cup milk1 can cherry fruit fillingwhipped topping, optional for garnish

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. For crust: Stir together crushed wafers and melted butter. Press mixture evenly over bottom and1 inches up sides of a 9 spring-form pan. Place the pan in a shallow baking pan.

For filling: In a large mixing bowl beat cream cheese, sugar, the 4 squares of melted chocolate, flour, and vanilla until well mixed. Add eggs all at once, then beat with an electric mixer on lowspeed just until mixed.Do not overbeat. Stir in milk. Pour filling into the crust.

Bake in a 350 degree oven about 45 to 50 minutes or until center appears nearly set when gentlyshaken. Cool on a wire rack 5 to 10 minutes. Loosen sides of cheesecake from pan. Let cool

another 30 minutes before removing sides of pan. Cover and chill for 4 to 24 hours.

And from the mailbox . . .Heres another recipe that we alldefinitely have to try, sent to us by Marilyn (Mitchell)

    Pruyn . . .

Came across this on my bulletin board that I just rehung in my office. Thought it was too good not to share. From

a cookbook created by residents of a senior living community in DeKalb, Illinois.

    LIFE'S RECIPE

    1 cup of good thoughts

    1 cup of kind deeds

1 cup of consideration for others

2 cups of sacrifice for others

    3 cups of forgiveness

    3 cups of well-beaten faults

Mix above ingredients thoroughly. Add tears of joy, sorrow and sympathy for others. Flavor with little bits of

love. Fold in 4 cups of prayer and faith. Pour into daily life and bake well with the heat of human kindness. Servewith a smile.

From Eve (Cook) Hoygaard in Colorado . . .

Looking forward to attending the April 29 Scholarship Presentaion event and to seeing other '57classmates. I always seem to have more things to do than time to do them when I make it back to LS. Ihave not been there since June 2009 . . . too long and I have a new (Dec.2010) great-niece and great-great nephew to meet this time. Life seems to continue to be busy here. My husband has had healthproblems for the past few months that have curtailed our travel/activities but we are planning forcamping trips and other summer fun now that he is feeling better. I am cutting back a bit on myprofessional organization volunteer work and spending more time on my genealogy searches. Spring hereis way too dry and much too windy this year. Have not started on yard work/flower beds, etc. Life is

    good! Eve

    From Bob Hoke . . .

Marilyn thanks for the reminder. We will be in Louisiana the end of April and hope to get to L.S. for the gettogether, if we can leave our first great grandson. I did have a good talk with Ted via e-mail once I got themsn right! Also talked with Caroline about Fred. Bob

Congratulations, Bob, on the great-grandson! Hope we can compete with that distraction!!

And from Margaret (Davis) Offen . . .

Made it back from my trip to Atlanta with flying colors. The flight was great both ways and had a greattime visiting my cousin in Atlanta. Drove by where I used to live but nothing there but apartment

houses now. My cousin lives north of Atlanta so if you want to go anywhere it takes forever to get

there. The dogwoods were beautiful and all the flowers were beautiful. Went to the aquarium and it

was fabulous. Never knew there were so many fishes in the world. Tom and I are looking forward to

start fishing again this year. Will probably go the 1st of May now since the gtg is the end of the month.

Am now looking forward to the gtg. Hope we have a good group coming. Looking forward to seeing you

all in a couple of weeks. Margaret

Heres a report from Pat (Damsgard) on activities enjoyed while Garry & Peggy Garrisonwere in San Antonio doing their annual snowbirding . . .

Hiya, Well, its been quite a Spring so far. Garry and Peggy Garrison come down every yearand spend a couple of months at Canyon Lake. Weve seen them more this year than ever and

its been great! Garry likes to keep busy so we certainly accommodate him in that area..heand Loren chopped up and cut down all our dead trees which we lost over the draught last year.Initiated our new little red wagon to haul it all off. While they did that, Peggy and I wentshopping.cool. Had a great time. Next was a BBQ at G&Ps with a couple from Coloradoand another couple from Wisconsin they met at the gathering place where they all camp out.

Joe and Vicki Rittman joined us. Two of the guys had birthdays so we celebrated those at thesame time. G&P lit up a thingie from her son they got for Christmas. Cool!

They are now off and running for a couple of other places on their way to LS. We miss themalready! I collect barn wood birdhouses and they are on shelves in the guest bathroom. Peggypainted me a picture of a Chickadee and his birdhouse! Immediately put it up where we could

see it every day. Its gorgeous. The girls an artist no doubt about that!

Hope you all have a great time in LS this month. Im jealous! Say hello to everyone for us willyou? Enjoy! Hope all is well with Fred and Teddy. Saying prayers for them both and for allothers who are having a rough time of it. Love you guys, Pat Damsgard Hoglund and Loren!

Thanks to Pat, heres photos of their fun visit!

When I sent Vicki an email and asked if she and Joe are planning to come up for our Aprilweekend, this was her reply . . .

I don't think so, unfortunately. I hate that we'll miss it but maybe the next time.

By the way, to make a long story short, a CAT scan showed something in my right lung and the

radiologist said I needed a PET scan to check it out. Good news, not cancerous. Not sure how they cantell by just that scan but I'll take the good news. I continue to spit up colored phlegm (rust to brownishmaroon color). Fresh blood is what triggered all the tests. A bronchoscopy shows I do have polyps inmy windpipe right below my vocal cords; a biopsy was taken, as was done two years ago, but haven'tgotten the results from this one yet. The pulmonologist is consulting with another specialist regardingthe polyps but it will be a while before I hear anything because the other doc is out of the country. I feelok, just tired of clearing my throat all the time.

I'm stopping all my volunteer work June 1 and Joe, our dog and I will be doing a lot of road travel, mostly to see all the kids (coast to coast) and see the countryside in between. Who knows...we maytravel for a few weeks and decide.."this ain't for us" but we're taking a rather flexible approach andmaybe that won't happen. You know, travel around, stop when we want, stay as long as we want...noreal agenda or timeline and that's the beauty of it. We'll see...no RV but we have a large car now so allshould be good. Might see some of the class of '57 while on the road..???

It was nice seeing Peggy and Garry and also Pat and Loren. Colorado is in our travel plans during thesummer (it's always nice and cool there) so we will see the Garrisons again fairly soon.

Joe is doing good, we still enjoy living here; we don't get to see our kids often enough but I guess that'sjust the way it is. Miss all of you and hope it won't be too long before we see you! Vicki and Joe

    Health Updates

    Marcia (Fields) Russell . . .

I'm getting along pretty well. Good days and bad days like everyone else. Mostly good, though - thankgoodness! Most of my mind is still intact (I think), now if my right hand would really come to life. Usingthe walker isn't too bad, but I sure miss everything the hand wont do. See the Neurologist in twoweeks. Am anxious to hear what he has to say. Steph told me that Fred has had to go to a nursinghome. I'm so sorry. When I think about him, I realize my life is not that bad and quit feeling sorry formyself. And Ed and Ted are real inspirations. Food is ready. I'm always up for that! Luv,Marcia

    Don Lawrence . . .

Don is progressing very well. He is getting home health twice a week and when he is cleared with themhe is planning on going for more rehab at the Cassville hospital to get more strength in his legs. He

continues to do his daily exercise here at the house. He has been getting out some this week. Jeanne

    Ted Atkins . . .

    (Apr 8th

) We have great news!!! After a very difficult 8 1/2 hr surgery, the Drs were ableto remove Teds tumor and spleen and he is cancer free. This surgery will be followed up with 1 round ofchemo in 8 wks to make sure there are no stray cells to cause trouble in the future. Thank you all foryour prayers!! However, there were some complications. Cancer cells were found throughout the

pancreas and they had to remove it. That added 3 hrs and 2 transfusions to the surg. and becausehe was anesthetized for so long the anesthesiologist wanted him on a vent overnight. He was sent to theICU last evening. The vent was removed this am and he is doing well breathing on his own. He is stillheavily sedated and not totally out of the woods but the Drs are very optimistic (and so am I !!) Heknows his pancreas was removed but does not know the ramifications of this as of now. It will be a longrecovery but I know that he will handle this like a champ! He is a trooper!!!! He should be moved out ofthe ICU tonight or tomorrow. Please keep the prayers coming for him. We truly do appreciate them. Iwill keep you all in the loop during his recovery. Karen

    (Apr 12th) Hi Friends,

Some more good news--Ted was transferred from the ICU yesterday to a private room. He is awake, alert and able to walk the length of the hall today (while giving insight as to how run a more efficient

unit), but is still very tired and is still having more pain than I expected, but not unexpected by thedrs. They are starting him on a clear liquid diet today and hopefully the Drs will be able to removethe temporary feeding tube soon. We have been talking to the endocrinologist about managingdiabetes but it will take a while to get him regulated. At the start he will be checking blood sugars oftenand will have to have insulin injections 4 times a day-1 with each meal and 1 at bedtime. But as timegoes by he will be able to get by with less. And as all of you who know Ted you will not be surprisedthat he is already researching all of the breakthroughs in diabetic care. His Drs are very pleased andsurprised with his progress and he may be discharged as early as Fri or Sat. We will have visiting nursescoming here at home to monitor him as he heals.

Because Teds immune system is under par due to the chemo and the stress of the surgery the Drs arerecommending no visitors and because he is still "napping" a lot Ted does not want phone calls as ofnow. He is strong and taking everything in stride and I am so proud of him. Please keep the prayerscoming.

Thank-you and God Bless you all, Karen

Many of you are asking for a mailing address so here it is: 644 Newport Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15235

    Fred Peery . . .

I have been thinking that I needed to get an update to you for the newsletter. Fred is in a greatdeal of pain, so they have increased his morphine doses. He doesn't enjoy his cigars anymore as

he really isn't able to hardly get out of bed. Hospice says it could be another 3-4 weeks, but ourfamily is praying for Fred's release. We know it is in God's time and we aren't questioning that,so we just do what we can to make him comfortable. Every once in a while, the "old Fred"comes out and he can still tell us if we aren't doing something correctly. HA! I want to thankthose who have called me to check on him. When I go to see him I take a list of those who havecalled and he always give me a big grin. We all appreciate your continued prayers. CarolynPeery McCoy

This was an email forwarded by Joe Rittman that I thought would be of interest to all of us.

Any way we can SAVE on GASOLINE, Im all for trying it . . .

    TIPS ON PUMPING GAS

I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here in California we are paying up to$3.75 to $4.10 per gallon. My line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here aresome tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon. Here at the Kinder MorganPipeline where I work in San Jose, CA, we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour periodthru the pipeline. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premiumgrades. We have 34 storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is stillcold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. Thecolder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buyingin the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business,

the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and otherpetroleum products plays an important role. A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal forthis business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look youwill see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. You should be pumping onlow mode, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses atthe pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goesto your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the undergroundstorage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL. The reason forthis is the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasolineevaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes theevaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperaturecompensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.

Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop tobuy gas, DO NOT fill up; most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is beingdelivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

Remember when a 57 Chevy was

everyone's dream car? ... In some cases, it

still is! (my folks & Carls folks both had

one back then wish we had them

    now!)

Jack Place sent us the following . . .

SMALL TOWNSThose who grew up in small towns will laugh when they read this; those who didn't will be indisbelief and won't understand how true it is.

    1) You can name everyone you graduated with.2) You know what 4-H means.3) You went to parties at a pasture, barn, gravel pit, or in the middle of a dirt road. On Mondayyou could always tell who was at the party because of the scratches on their legs from runningthrough the woods when the party was busted. (See #5.)4) You used to 'drag' Main St .5) You scheduled parties around the schedules of different police officers, because you knewwhich ones would bust you and which ones wouldn't..6) You could never buy cigarettes because all the store clerks knew how old you were (and ifyou were old enough, they'd tell your parents anyhow.) Besides, where would you get the

money?7) You knew which section of the ditch you would find the beer your buyer dropped off.8) It was cool to date somebody from the neighboring town.9) The whole school went to the same party after graduation.10) You didn't give directions by street names but rather by references. Turn by Nelson's house,go 2 blocks to Anderson 's, and its four houses left of the track field.11) The golf course had only 9 holes.12) You couldn't help but date a friend's ex-boyfriend/girlfriend.13) Your car stayed filthy because of the dirt roads, and you will never own a white vehicle forthis reason.14) The town next to you was considered 'trashy' or 'snooty,' but was actually just like yourtown.

    15) You referred to anyone with a house newer than 1955 as the 'rich' people.16) The people in the 'big city' dressed funny, and then you picked up the trend 2 years later.17) Anyone you wanted could be found at the local gas station or on Main Street .18) You saw at least one friend a week driving a tractor through town or one of your friendsdriving a grain truck to school occasionally.19) The gym teacher suggested you haul hay or pick rock for the summer to get stronger.20) Directions were given using the only stop light as a reference.21) When you decided to walk somewhere for exercise, 5 people would pull over and ask if youwanted a ride.22) Your teachers called you by your older siblings' names.23) Your teachers remembered when they taught your parents.24) You could charge at any local store or write checks without any ID.

    25) There was no McDonalds.26) The closest mall was over an hour away.27) It was normal to see an old man riding through town on a riding lawn mower.28) You've peed in a wheat field.29) Most people went by a nickname.30) You laughed your butt off reading this because you know it is true, and you forward it toeveryone who may have lived in a small town.

I would not have wanted to be raised any other way!!!! THANKS, Jack!
