    HI-LIFE IILSHS Class of 1957

Vol XI # 1 Ed Heinlein, E IC Emeritus

    Jan 2013 and Fearless Leader

Here we are in 2013! And the World hasnt come to an end yet hip,

    hip, hoooray!

    AND, were starting our 11th

year since Ed published our firstHi-Life II. When our

Class voted Ed Most Likely to Succeed we really knew what we were doing, didntwe? Thank you, Ed, for letting ALL of us enjoy your success!

This is my little brother, Billy. Georgeanne and I were 12 and 9 when he was born in 1949.

We decided this was an appropriate use of him just before his first birthday on Jan. 10th

    An update from our

    fearless leader

    Ed Heinlein

The newsabout HAROLD SHEWMAKER (reported elsewhere in this issue) has

devastated all of us, as would similar news about any other Classmate. Once again, I amreminded of how fortunate I have been to have reestablished contact in the 21st century

with Classmates from the Twentieth. Harold is a perfect example. Harolds and Carolyns

road will be long and bumpy, so our knee-time must be long and constant. Nuff said!

UMPTEENITH ANNUAL GTG has been set for April 11-13. Our Ms are working

on schedules, agendas and other details; watch for these in February but in the meantime,

please block off those days. We will have official functions on Friday and Saturdaynights and will have the presentation to our ninth Coverdell Scholar at 9:00 Friday in the

Brockman Lecture Hall. We hope to have one or more special guests at the presentation,

    so please plan to attend.

GRANNY AND GRANDDADS HOUSE Marilyn and I were talking the other day

about the trials and tribulations (and the joys, of course!) of putting out theHI-LIFE IIon a monthly basis. We found we have had similar frustrations. We have lots of people

eager to read about what others are doing, but many fewer who have time enough toshare what is going on in their lives. We decided that one way to encourage people to

share with the Class and others would be to start a Grandkids Brag Corner, or somesuch title. I volunteered to make the first submission.

Directly behind this page is a copy of Memory Scetches [sic], the Christmas presentgiven to me this year by our 16 year-old granddaughter, Annie. Annie made all of her

gifts this year, and I think I got the best of the lot!

    These memories include her skunking her Granddad at cribbage for the first time;

gazing at stars in Yosemite; ignoring the ovens warnings that our cookies were done.

(thus, CHARCOAL COOKIES.) The best memory of all deals with BUTTERBRICKLE ICE CREAM. (Annie, as most other Californians, have never heard of ButterBrickle Ice Cream; when I discovered a store which served it, I called Annie and said,

Come on, Girl, I am going to take you for a little taste of Heaven!) Note the drawinghas Granddad taking two lanes to race to the store AND (darn her black heart), note the

haircut she has given the driver.

Hope to see you in April!

    NEW SECTION of theHi-Life II

Back in April, 2009, when we proclaimed Mr. Brockman anHonorary Member of the Class

of 1957, we prepared a booklet containing bios of our Classmates to present to Mr. B,

letting him know what weve each accomplished since leaving LSHS. Since there were

some Classmates from 57 that didnt get a copy of this booklet, as well as many from other

classes that receive our NL, Im going to start including one bio each month, alphabetically. If a name is skipped in the alphabetical list, it is because I did not receive a bio from that

person. Some classmates didnt get around to sending one in and, of course, there weresome deceased prior to that date that wont be presented.

I will attempt to contact you during the month before you are to be published in hopes thatyou might send along highlights or stories of your career and possibly even a family

photograph. SO, be prepared for me!

The first bio in the booklet was from Ted Atkins but, since his info was included back inJuly, 2012, along with his obituary, we will start with the 2

    ndentry . . .

Paul Wayne Bacon, currently living in Pueblo, CO

Ruth and I were married June 15, 1957 in Independence, MO. at the Church of Christ. I started

working at the Post Office in July, 1957, and continued working there for 35+ years and retired

    in 1992.

We have three sons, Gary, Michael and David. We moved to Arizona in 1975 and lived in

Phoenix for 19 years. Then in 1994, after retiring from the Post Office, we moved to Beulah,

CO. Beulah is in the Wet Mountains and we really enjoyed our 11 years of living there. In 2005

we moved into Pueblo, CO and still live there today.

Our boys were all married while we lived in Phoenix. We have 10 grandchildren and 4 great-

grandchildren. One of our sons still lives in Beulah, another one lives in Denver, and the third

lives in Oregon. We feel we have been greatly blessed by the LORD throughout the years.

We enjoy walking, fishing, gardening and working for the church. Also, I enjoy going deerhunting with my brother. Retirement has been a real blessing, especially since we have been in

    Colorado.

In June this year (2009) we will be celebrating our 52nd

    anniversary. We are planning to

celebrate by taking a cruise to Alaska.

    And from the mailbox . . .

    From Eve (Cook 57) Hoygaard . . .

Our weather here is cold ( - 10 yesterday morning),some snow and some sunshine but "it's a dry cold"!

Actually, we had snow on Saturday that I swept off the driveway......easier than using the shovel. Ourholidays were overall pretty nice. Bill's granddaughter flew down from college in Idaho and spent a weekwith us that included Christmas. That was delightful for Bill and me both. The three of us went to the VanGogh exhibit at the Denver Art Museum .. . it was spectacular! With Bill having been ill (GI bug that

landed him in the hospital for a couple of days . . . he is doing well now) we somehow did not sendcards/letters this year. I have the cards and the Forever stamps so maybe next year's cards will be early!

Judy Ann and I have not yet made it to lunch ( the May birthday lunch is often a bit late!) but we will. Weare making plans.

Will try to make it back in April for the '57 events that I understand are being planned.

Hope we are all able to avoid the flu bug . . . it is not too late for the immunization and hand washing is

your friend! Best Wishes to all for 2013! Evelyn

    Also, Eve shares a Tip from . . .

University of Colorado College of NursingWELLNESS WEDNESDAY TIP: Not All LipBalms Are Created Equal

With the low temperatures, you'll probably be turning to lip balm to protect your lips. Before you apply

any of it, check the ingredient list. If your lip balm has phenols, don't use it. These compounds willactually strip off the top layer of your lips. Instead, opt for a moisturizing lip balm instead. It will keepyour lips' natural protective layer safe and sound.

I looked up phenol in an online medical dictionary and heres what I came up with . . .an extremely poisonous compound, C6H5OH, which is caustic and disinfectant; used as a pharmaceutic

preservative and in dilution as an antimicrobial and topical anesthetic and antipruritic. Poisoning, due toingestion or transdermal absorption, causes symptoms including colic, local irritation, corrosion, seizures,

cardiac arrhythmias, shock, and respiratory arrest. Needless to say, I checked the ingredients in

every tube of lip balm in the house! I suggest you do the same.

Our Colorado Snow Birds .. Peggy & Garry Garrison .. are on their way south this week

for their winter tour, covering approximately 3476 miles, traveling thru New Mexico,Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, in about 3 months. Hopefully, we may see them in

Lees Summit in April before they head back home to Colorado. Drive safely, Garry!

AN INTERESTING DISCOVERY reported to me recently: My cousin Chris in California

(our Prewitt family historian) was watching the TV series Who Am I? when they hadTim McGraw on the show; in discussing his ancestors, the Nave family name came up.

There are Naves also in our family tree, so Chris did some research. Long story short

    Tim McGraw is my 4th

cousin! Needless to say, Georgeanne and I both have kids and

    gkids that areabsolutelythrilled!

    Safety Patrol be aware

Help Protect Your Home and Family in Winter Storms

Every year, dozens of Americans die and thousands more are injured due to winter weatherrelated hazards. Others inadvertently suffer from carbon monoxide poisoning or start a home fire

by misusing alternative heat sources when riding out a bad winter storm. It doesnt have to be

that way. With a little preparation and a good plan, you can help stay safe at home.

When a storm strikes in the winter, an entire community can be paralyzed and you can become

stranded at home. The greatest threats to your family are loss of heat, power and a shortage ofsupplies. Before the winter season, update your Family Emergency Kit to include winter-related

needs. A Winter Weather Survival Kit should include:

Five days worth of non-perishable food and water

    Can opener

    Flashlight

    Portable emergency radio (hand-crank, solar-powered or battery-operated)

    Batteries

Any prescription medication needed by family members

    First aid kit

List of phone numbers for relatives

Neighbors and utility company phone numbers and information

Pictures and descriptions of your family

If you have pets, include five days worth of canned pet food and water, sturdy leashes,

harnesses or carriers, current photos/ descriptions and a litter box. Emergency heat source (space heater, fireplace supplies)

UL Listed Fire extinguisher, smoke alarm

    Matches in a waterproof container

Every family should also review their Home Safety Plan to be sure that they are ready in case of

an emergency. Oftentimes, snow/ice will change your potential escape routes, so be sure to

review the changes and challenges that winter weather might create.

After the storm is over, its time to clear away the snow and prevent potential flooding and icing.

Dress in warm layers while shoveling and be sure not to get overheated. Hydrate regularly andtake frequent breaks. It is easy to overdo it, so pay attention to how your body is feeling.

If possible, avoid driving until the roads have been fully cleared. This helps keep you safe andmakes it easier for emergency personnel to get around.
