More Light and Less Energy SuperMall of The Great Northwest, located just east ofTacoma in Auburn, WA is an over one million square footshopping complex serving over 7,000,000 customersannually. Opened in 1995, SuperMall is just 1 of 24malls owned and operated by Glimcher Realty Trust, which is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio.

Glimcher Realty Trust malls are in the process of updatinglighting in all areas, and recently began this process withSuperMall of the Great Northwest. Paul Hensley, operations director of the mall, was looking for moreuniform brighter light, with energy savings. SuperMallturned to United Lamp Supply of Tacoma, WA. KarlWillard, Sales Manager for United Lamp, with more than20 years of lighting experience himself, managed theproject from beginning to end.

Challenges and ResultsInitially, (240) 1000W standard probe start lamps andballasts were replaced by the energy efficient 875Wpulse start lamps and ballasts in the malls variousparking lots. The 875W systems saved 155 watts perfixture and footcandle readings were a full 37% higherthan with the previous systems. Since the photometrics ofthe lamps were the same, the existing parking lot polesand fixtures did not need to be changed, significantlyreducing installation costs.

In the food court areas of the mall, (91) 250W standardprobe start lamps and ballasts were replaced with 200WUni-Form pulse start systems. (35) 400W standardprobe start lamps and ballasts were replaced with 320WUni-Form pulse start systems. In the various entrances ofthe mall, (32) 175W standard probe start lamps andballasts were replaced with 150W Uni-Form pulse startlamps and ballasts. Paul Hensley is happy to report thatthe initial introduction to each mall entrance now plays amore positive role in the overall shopping experience forSuperMall customers.

Saving from RebatesAs incentive for using this energy efficient technology,SuperMall received an energy rebate from the local utility,Puget Sound Energy. The mall received an up-frontrebate of $156,000.00, which enabled them to reducethe pay-back period in half.

  • Grocery StoreThe Metal Halide InnovatorIn grocery stores, lighting can play a significant role inassisting shoppers in locating items on shelves and inhighlighting important features of those items. Attractivedisplays encourage customers to browse and buy, leavingthem satisfied and more likely to return. The grocerystore industry is extremely competitive, and any featuremore pleasing to a customer can mean the differencebetween success and failure during the shoppingexperience. Grocery stores with lights that are brightwith an appealing color are more likely to enticecustomers to shop at their location rather than at a storewith lighting that creates a gloomy atmosphere.

In the example pictured, a Charlotte, NC grocery storetook advantage of HIDirects HF electronic ballasthousing/fixture. This choice enabled them to not onlydisplay their grocery store items in the most appealingmanner possible, but also to achieve significant energysavings in the process.

Many grocery store chains are looking for even greatercolor rendering of their stocked items, and are choosingNatural White pulse start products. The high 90+ colorrendering (CRI) and 5000K color temperature of thisproduct line displays grocery items in the best possiblelight, providing a natural sunlight atmosphere to anystore location. Color sensitive items such as produce andmeats are displayed in a much brighter and appealinglight.

Improving Worker SafetyA 1.3 million square foot steel mill located near Gary,Indiana is aware of the importance to the ecology of thesurrounding countryside, and works continuously toimprove its operations to become more environmentallyfriendly. In November of 2006, they looked intoreplacing hundreds of their older and energy inefficientstandard probe start metal halide, mercury vapor andhigh pressure sodium lamps with a more energy efficientlighting technology, hoping to significantly reduce energyusage and improve safety and the productivity of theworkers.

They were utilizing (1190) 1000 watt standard probestart metal halide, (340) 1000 watt mercury vapor and(170) 400 watt high pressure sodium high bay lights.Choosing HIDirects 875 watt pulse start system, theywere able to reduce the fixture count by 44%, resulting ina 50% energy savings. In various parts of the mill, entirerows of lamps could now be eliminated due to theexceptional light output of the HIDirect lamps! Overall,(952) 875 watt pulse start metal halide systems replacedthe original (1700) systems. They were able to reduce thetotal number of lamps, ballasts and fixtures resulting in areduction of inventory and lighting maintenance costs.

Making a Positive DifferenceWorker attitudes improved noticeably once the newlighting systems were installed. The typical yellow lightprovided by HPS lamps was ineffective at rendering colorsaccurately on the production floor, resulting in poor qualityand overall productivity. In addition, this existing lightingsystem was very energy inefficient, resulting in higher thanacceptable monthly energy costs.

A local lighting specialist recommended utilizing HIDirects350W Natural White pulse start metal halide lamps incombination with electronic ballasts as the ideal solution. The light from Natural White lamps mimics that from naturalsunlight, resulting in a brighter and more natural lookingwork space.

In switching to Natural White pulse start technology, thismanufacturer immediately obtained the brightest and bestpossible lighting system available, while also achievinggood energy savings. As an added bonus, this systemprovided 90% lumen maintenance, meaning that theNatural White lamps are providing nearly the same higherlight output years after their initial installation.

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, one of thebusiest airports in the world, recently completed acomprehensive lighting retrofit in its parking garage, switching from standard probe start metal halide lampsto more energy efficient Uni-Form pulse start metalhalide lamps.

Ready to RelampAfter many years of constant use, the 175, 250, and400watt standard probe start metal halide lamps in theairport parking garage needed relamping. Due to tightbudget constraints in the air travel industry, energysavings was a key consideration in specifying the newlamps, and airport management did not want to sacrificelight output to cut energy costs.

By switching to new Uni-Form pulse start metal halidetechnology, the airport would see immediate benefits. These benefits ranged from large yearly energy savings, reduced maintenance costs based upon the extendedlamp life, increased light output, and better colorrendering for improved security and easier identificationof the customers cars. Uni-Form pulse start metal halidelamps were recommended. They outperform standardprobe start metal halide lamps by providing energysavings, long life (20,000+ hours) and increased lightoutput over the life of the system.

The decision to switch to this technology was made eveneasier when the local power company, Xcel Energy, offered the airport a substantial rebate for retrofitting withpulse start technology. HIDirects energy saving 125 and150 watt Uni-Form pulse start metal halide lamps werethe lamps of choice to retrofit the current system.

Brighter Future for Airport The six month project involved the installation of morethan 4,000 lamps and ballasts in the parking garagestructure. Airport management was ecstatic with the resultof the retrofit: We doubled our light levels! said BobLitke, Electrical/General Foreman for the MetropolitanAirports Commission, and with the substantial energy-savings, we should begin seeing a return on ourinvestment in only one year.

    Benefits: Energy savings

More Light and Less EnergyIn Murfreesboro, TN, located 40 miles south of Nashville,Innsbrooke Plaza is a 150,000 square foot shoppingcomplex. In early 2008, Inland Continental PropertyManagement, the developer of Innsbrooke Plaza, waslooking to improve the overall lighting output in theparking areas of the mall. The existing lighting consistedof (6) lighting poles 39 in height, each of which held (4)1000W high pressure sodium lamps in vertical semi-cutoff luminaires. High pressure sodium lamps cast ayellowish light, making it difficult for shoppers to see wellat night, and provide very poor color rendering, makingthe identification of ones automobile in the lot difficult aswell.

To achieve the goals of improved lighting levels andquality, and reduced energy consumption andmaintenance, HIDirects 775W Natural White pulse startmetal halide systems were used in combination withsharp cutoff luminaires in a one-for-one replacement ofthe high pressure sodium systems. Natural White lampsprovide whiter and brighter light due to superior colorrendering; a color temperature of 5000K essentiallymatches the color of natural sunlight. By switching to thismuch lower wattage option, Innsbrooke was able toachieve an incredible reduction of 255 watts per fixture, resulting in 23% less energy consumption, and thesuperior white light output of the 775 watt lampsincreased footcandles in the parking lot by 60%!

Inland and Innsbrooke Plaza are pleased with their newwhiter Natural White pulse start lamps and ballasts. Not only were all initial goals of improved light levels, reduced energy consumption and improved lightingmaintenance met and surpassed, yet in addition,Innsbrooke is now benefiting from an annual energysavings of $4,000!

Its a great investment notonly in the citys beauty but in

    its public security. The new

    lighting technology has

    changed the citys panorama

completely.-Antonio GershensenPublic Lighting Director ofMexico City

The Metal Halide InnovatorMexico City, with its more than 20 million residents, wasin search of street lighting, which would provide bettervisibility at night. With a preponderance of high pressuresodium lamps used, HPS may have long life, but theirdistinctive yellow glow reduces overall visibility duringthe night, creating public safety and security issues, amajor concern of one municipality.

In the summer of 2005 the Mexico City municipalityutilized 36,000 of HIDirects 200 watt Uni-Form

Horizontal pulse start lamps for street lights. About 60%of these lamps were used to retrofit existing HPS lamps, while the remaining lamps were for entirely newinstallations. Its a great investment not only in the citysbeauty but in its public security. The new lightingtechnology has changed the citys panorama completely, stated Antonio Gershensen, Public Lighting Director ofMexico City.

Studies have shown that metal halide lighting, whichutilizes more visible white light, can have a visibilityeffectiveness of up to six times that of HPS when used atnight. Gershensen further noted: This kind of lamp gives30% more light than the old yellow ones (HPS), they havelonger life and they represent an important developmentin color fidelity. The lamps not only last longer but alsogive more brightness and clearness.

Mario Bonilla Ramirez, Coacalco County Under Directorof Public Services, also notes that these lamps haveresulted in a diminishing of 25% in the small felonies inthe streets.

Per Jim McPhillips, lighting consultant, the success inMexico City has resulted in the largest metal halideproject in all of Latin America! And Reforma, the mostimportant daily newspaper in Mexico, identified thismunicipality as the best public lighting system in theentire metropolitan area of Mexico City.

Human Eye SensitivityThe sensitivity of the human eye to different colors of lightat various light levels determines the true, or effective, lumen output of a lamp. The eye responds to colordepending upon the amount of light available.

Lumens are the standard measure of light output, but lightis actually defined as energy evaluated by the eye.Conventional lumen measurements define the light outputresponse of a person only during high light levels (calledphotopic light), typical of daylight and interior lighting. The light meter measures photopic light as seen by thecentral region of the eye.

When light levels are very low, like starlight, the viewingconditions are referred to as scotopic. Under theseconditions, the eyes visual response changesdramatically. Sensitivity to yellow and red light is greatlyreduced, while response to blue light is vastly increased. If lamp lumens under scotopic viewing conditions havebeen determined using photopic measuring devices, thelumen value does not accurately measure the true amountof light as perceived by the human eye.

What Are Scotopic Lumens?Nighttime ObservationsPublished lumen ratings are based on the photopiclumen (P), or light measurement based on daytimeobservations. Lumen measurements, corrected fornighttime vision, are known as scotopic lumens (S).The ratio of light measured by the 2 methods is called theS/P ratio. The S/P ratio for white-blue (5000Kdaylight) light sources is 2.1. At 4000K the ratio is 1.65,and for HPS lamps the ratio is 0.64. As a result, 4000Klight sources are at least twice as effective for viewing atnight compared to HPS sources at the same photopicluminance. 5000K light sources are at least three timesas effective.

Daytime ObservationsLamps with high scotopic content and high S/P ratios, such as HIDirects Natural White lamps, also improve theability to see indoors. Human studies have shown that theS/P values, though previously applicable to onlynighttime conditions, can be used to describe theeffective lumens of indoor lighting as well. For example,if two identical objects in 2 different rooms are lightedseparately with 4000K and 5000K lamps to equalphotopic luminance, the 5000K room will appear 21%brighter (2.1/1.65)0.78.

Performance is EverythingFor lighting applications, performance is everything. It isimportant that lighting fixtures provide top performancein terms of heat management, optics and appearance. The lamp and ballast are expected to provide uniform, bright light as well as great lumen maintenance and longlife.

There are several types of burn positions posted by allmanufacturers. First, there is the Universal or U. Thereis the Vertical or V and the Base Up or BU. Lastly, wehave the Horizontal or HOR. Most horizontal lightingapplications sacrifice light and life with standard choicesin lamps.

Horizontal +/- 75 (H75)HIDirects Horizontal Pulse Start systems is unique simplybecause of the Uni-Form formed body arc tube.Understanding the practical need to remove the POMbase and socket requirement from horizontally operatinglamps, HIDirect found a way to keep the electrodes at thecenter of the arc tube at all times, so the install positioninghas now become irrelevant.

Benefits Longer life compared to both universal and

HOR lamps in horizontal operation, and higherlumen output

    No POM socket required

Variety of outer jacket shapes and sizes for full cut-off fixtures

Features Thicker wall of the lamp arc tube

Better distribution of the halides in the arc stream

LifeThe walls of the arc tube are substantially thickened withquartz material. This results in less heating of the upperside of the arc tube, which in turn results in longer overalllamp life.

LumensThe Uni-Form arc tube shape has been modified to offerbetter lumens. The chemistry of the metal halide arc tubehas been changed to produce the lumens that equal thetypical V or BU versions of the lamp. This also hasresulted in greater mean lumens of this product line.

HIDirect offers the horizontal pulse start lamp line thatnow offers long life and high lumens based on a betterarc tube. This product line eliminates the problemsassociated with the POM base lamp and socket and isoffered in a variety of jacket sizes and wattages.

Application TargetsHIDirects horizontal pulse start (H75) series is targeted atthe mid-range wattages as well as the enclosed fixture. This series of lamps is perfect for parking garages, cardealerships, site lighting, wall washes, gas stationcanopies, area lighting and parking lot lighting.
