Waiting in WonderCongratulations on your pregnancy! We believe that this time in your life should be captured in a fun, relaxed, naturally beautiful way. Maternity sessions last about 30 minutes to 1 hour, and allow plenty of time for several wardrobe changes and all of the shots you want to get!

If you’re looking for more intimate portraits of you and your partner, we suggest a studio session or an in-home session, where we come to you! Outdoor sessions tend to be more candid and relaxed, and are a perfect way to involve little ones or pets in a fun setting. Or, mix it up and start with 30 minutes at the studio, then 30 minutes at a local park if you’d like!

Whatever you choose, rest assured that in addition to capturing stunning, flattering photos of you, we strive to make your session as comfortable as possible.

Session Day! It’s finally here! Make the most out of your session by knowing what to expect.

Our goal is to capture flattering potraits of you while making your experience as comfortable and relaxed as possible. We’ll explain every shot before we start, and will recommend poses based on your style and the look you want to achieve.

On the day of the session, you may choose to visit a salon for hair and makeup, or use one of our personal stylists at the studio for personal styling. If you’re doing your makeup yourself, add an extra layer of eyeliner and mascara, and slightly darker eyeshadow than you normally wear. All-natural is completely stunning, too!

Classic clothing always photographs well, and we recommend bringing a pair of jeans (they don’t have to zip!), with a white t-shirt or tank and a black t-shirt or tank to start. For 1-3 other looks, show off your personality with maxi dresses, cute lingerie, a knit cardigan, or even a bikini! Long sleeves are always flattering, and tops don’t have to fit over your belly! A general rule: always choose items that are fitted, and show the curve of your belly well. If you’re doing family portraits, simple clothing that coordinates is recommended.

If you choose to bring anything sheer, or want to do semi-nude shots, think about the undergarments you’ll wear, as they may in the photos. At the studio, we have plenty of soft wraps and scarves to do maternity ‘wrap’ portraits.

Personal DetailsDon’t forget the details! Make your maternity session personal with keepsake objects, jewelry, and accessories.

Some cute ideas: bring your ultrasound photo to use in portraits, wear any important jewelry given to you as gifts, bring a special accessory from your wedding, pose with chalkboard signs with your baby’s name, bring your baby’s first shoes or toys, or choose to do a gender reveal shoot where you creatively announce whether you’re having a boy or girl!

SiblingsIf you have older children, getting them involved in the session might seem like a stressful ordeal, but it’s actually pretty fun! Young children forget they’re being photographed when we’re playing games, singing songs, and moving around.

In a session involving younger kids, we’ll do the full family shots first, then focus on their interaction with you and your belly. After we’ve gotten every shot you’ve dreamed of with your little one, we’ll fo-cus on just you. Our nursery has plenty of toys to keep little ones occupied, but dad could also take them out for a cupcake or icecream!

Children

Giggles and GrowingCapture the magic of childhood for your kids! Our goal is to create a fun, whimsical session experience for your children that they will talk about for years to come. Hour-long sessions allow plenty of time for us to get to know your children, and for several breaks in between poses for little ones. We’ll start off with some traditional posed shots if you want them, then move onto fun, kinetic shots like jumping together, playing Simon Says, or having a hugging contest!

The possibilities are endless for sessions- if you’ve booked a Little Star, it’s your child’s chance to shine. If you booked a lifestyle session, your kids can be themselves with your home as a backdrop. In any setting, our lenses capture the most magical moments of being a kid!

Session Day! The day is finally here! We’ll start the session off slowly and get to know your children and their personalities. Some kids are excited to jump right into the session, and others need a little time to warm up. We have a full hour to shoot, so we can take our time!

During the pre-session, feel free to let us know if your child might be shy, and what usually gets them smiling, We have a few tricks up our sleeves, too- jumping and playing games like ‘red light green light’, telling jokes, and playing with toys can make kids forget they’re being photographed. By the end of the session, we’ll have stunning shots, and your kids might not want to leave! Feel free to bring any of their favorite toys and snacks if they need to take a break. Remember to relax and have fun! Kids will smile if you do.

Clothing

Props & Sets

There’s so much to choose from with kids’ clothes! We recommend 1-2 outfits, depending on the style of the shoot. Simple, classic clothing always photographs well, and it should match the season when your session takes place. Summer dresses are beautiful on the beach, while a layered sweater look is perfect for the Fall.

When dressing multiple children, you might want to coordinate, them, but not match them. An easy way to do this is to pick the outfit for one child (maybe a patterned shirt for a boy), then plan the other child’s outfit around those colors. Try Mini Boden, Crew Cuts, Gap Kids, or special hand-made items from Etsy!

Of course you know that we’re obsessed with props here at HHP! During our pre-session, we’ll go over your vision for the session and any outfits you’re planning. We may create a custom set for the look if we’re inspired, or choose from our giant closet of props (suitcases, chairs, backdrops, etc). Feel free to request something specific that’s meaningful to your family!

If you’re not sure what you’d like for props, we’ll take a look at what your kids will be wearing and create a set around that on the day of the session.

Family

All Together Now!Family shoots should be fun, and show the love you have for each other in a relaxed way. Hour-long sessions allow plenty of time for us to get to know your family, and for several breaks in between poses for little ones. We’ll start off with some traditional group shots if you want them, then move onto fun, kinetic shots like jumping together, walking hand-in-hand, or having a giant group hug. Shots of siblings together and by themselves is next on the list, and we try to give each family member their time to shine.

Studio or outdoor? Outdoor family shoots allow for a wide variety of traditional and candid photos, and tend to be gorgeous on the beach or at the park. The studio gives a little more of a traditional look, and may be best for you if you have young toddlers who might get dis-tracted easily by an outdoor setting. Either way, we’ll make it fun and stress-free!

What To WearThe first step to coordinating a group of people is to choose one piece that you love, whether it be your daughter’s patterned dress or a dress you want to wear. Take the color and style of that one piece, and plan the rest of the family’s outfits around it. The trend right now is to coordinate, not match, but sometimes similar outfits work, especially on the beach. Trust your vision and style!

If your goal is to have photos hanging on your walls, think about the decor and colors of your home when dressing your family. If you have an in-home lifestyle shoot, think about simple colors that work well with your home as a backdrop.

Secrets for SuccessFirst: go with the flow! We don’t expect your family to be anyone but themselves with us. We expect young children to need a break, or to assert their indepen-dence during a shoot. As long as we keep it relaxed and no-pressure, it’s easier to move on from roadbloacks and have fun during the session!

Second, children often do better without their parents watching. We might ask you to take a walk while we work with them to capture something amazing! The promise of a cupcake or a toy from our treasure box also works wonders!

Third: smile! Kids are always more relaxed and happy if you are, too. :)

What To Wear

Secrets for SuccessLifestyle ShootsSometimes the best backdrop for your family shoot is your own home, where you can tell a story of how your family really is. ‘Lifestyle’ shoots allow us to capture your family naturally, doing day-to-day activities that you want to remember. Reading a book to your little one in bed, baking cookies with your kids, or playing in the backyard as a family are all examples of memories we’ve photographed.

Lifestyle shoots can be as planned or unplanned as you like- we’ll suggest activities you can do as a family, or you can request we capture special moments that make up your unique story. Lifestyle shoots can also be outdoors at a location that’s special to your family- we’ll capture you having fun on your boat, picking flowers from a favorite field, or interacting at your favorite carnival or museum. The possibilities are endless!
