Bright solutions turn on the charm in a once-drab and dated space

Master Suite Makeover

Sheryl Horton, a kitchen designer, called me because a company she used towork for advertised in Houston House & Home. “I needed an extra set ofexperienced eyes when we were readying our former house to sell,” Sherylexplained. “You helped keep me on track and spend money on projectsthat would enhance the sale and not get hung up on projects that wouldnot matter to buyers. Since the previous house sold quickly and I hadworked with you before, I really trusted your recommendations.”

The couple’s plan was to buy a much smaller foreclosure—a fixerupper—to live in and remodel while they searched for a retirement home inHilton Head, SC. “You came out the day our slab was being jack ham-mered and didn’t miss a beat!” Sheryl recalled.

TIP: If you are handy, do as much physical work as you can to save thou-sands and not “overbuild the neighborhood.”

They refer to their former master bath as the “worst room in thehouse.” It had nasty carpet that had been used as a doggy bed, and theroom was small, dark and dingy. I immediately suggested elevating the cab-inets to increase the feeling of more space, which her husband Charlie creat-

ed by building legs onto new frameless custom cabinets. To further increasespace, the couple mirrored the fronts of two closet doors on each side of thebuilt-in linen cabinet and trimmed the wall around the doors to resemble abuilt-in armoire (opposite the sinks). The mirrored doors bounced a lot oflight around the once-dark room and made the room feel wider. Twoopaque, glass pocket doors (special ordered from Home Depot) eliminateawkward, space-gobbling door swings into the bathroom and shower areaand further flood the room with light.

TIP: Use mirrors and translucent glass to bounce light around, reflect gar-den views and visually increase space.

Because she did not want the maintenance of stone, Sheryl chose neu-tral Dal-Tile 20-inch porcelain tile in Capriccio Aria Crema for the floors tocoordinate with the granite and paint colors. The same tile was used in sev-eral sizes in the shower for interest and continuity. BEFORE (above): A hugewindow made placing aking-sized bed and two bedside tables rather difficult.

AFTER (left): Closing in thelarge window provided aplace for furniture. Addingthree new energy efficientwindows added light andcreated a view of the lovelyback yard.

BEFORE (above right): Sheryl wanted a placeto sit with a large mirror and drawers, and thestorage wall did not allow that.

AFTER (top of this page): The solutioninvolved removing the storage wall and select-ing frameless cabinet construction to place oneach side of the new energy efficient windowall the way to the ceiling. Sheryl got the mirrorand soft-close drawers she wanted and added10- to 15-percent more storage than with typi-cal face-frame cabinets.

new 9-inch deep cabinets on each side ofthe new sit-down vanity. “Now mycurling iron and hair dryer are andplugged in, within easy reach and readyto use in metal-lined cups, so there is notangle of cords on the counter while theappliances are cooling,” Sheryl said.Nine new soft-close drawers provideample storage for toiletries and are alsoup off the ground on matching legs.

TIP: When remodeling your bath, takethe opportunity to make the spacefunction the way you want it. Choosesurfaces that are neutral and will appealto buyers.

Matching brushed nickel cabinet hard-ware from www.myknobs.com, DanzeFairmont Collection faucets fromwww.faucetsdirect.com and a combination of new recessed and sconcelights from Carol’s Lighting unify the space. A new special order Sterlingglass shower door from Home Depot and the splurge of a second show-erhead mounted on an adjustable bracket makes cleaning much easier. Abrushed nickel grab bar was added for safety.

Even though there is a window in the shower/WC room, the coupleadded a new quiet ventilator with a timer so that they can walk away andknow that the moisture will be removed without wasting a lot of energy.

Benjamin Moore “Sandy White” matte wall paint on the walls andceilings in the master bathroom and bedroom expands the space andallows the crown molding to pop.

The molding and trim throughout came from BMC West and werepainted with Benjamin Moore Satin Impervo Acrylic Latex Enamel in#314-01 “White.” John DeGrouchy at Quality Granite and Marbleinstalled the Giallo Ornamental granite.

In the bedroom, the couple chose an Audrey king-size duvet coverand three Euro shams, two king-size Porcelain Blue Pick Stitch shamsand a monogrammed Morgan sham, all from Pottery Barn. The tailoredMartha Stewart bed skirt came from Macy’s. All coordinate with Sheryl’sblue and white porcelain collection.

TIP: Extending the wall paint onto the ceiling makes the ceilingsappear taller because your eyes go up and over the room without theline of demarcation that white ceilings can create.

If they had to do this over again, Sheryl and Charlie would have madethis project a higher priority instead of ripping out the bathroom carpetand walking around on rubber mats for three years.

“The finished bathroom is my favorite room in the house now. It islight, airy and has so much storage that I have room to spare,” Sherylexplained.

TRADE SECRETS• Get creative — repurposing old dresser mirrorsover the bathroom vanity saves money, too.• When the builder gave you lemons, use a professional to help you turn them into lemonade -- on your budget.• Remove dated sheet mirrors and update lightingto totally change your bathroom.• Sometimes the most effective strategy is to firstrethink the pieces that are already paid for.
